Be it known thatl, PAUL C. GIE-enna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the village of River Forest, county of Cook, and State lof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n toys, and has for its object the provision of an improved animated toy which is of simple construction, capable of economical manufacture and efficient and attractive in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the comblnations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to et inclusive, comprises a suitable frame 6 preferably made of wire, as shown, and having transverse axles 7 and 7 mounted therein. The axle 7 is in the form of a double crank shaft, the cranks S thereof being oppositely arranged as shown. Each of said axles carries two wheels 9, the wheels on axle 7 being rigidly secured thereto so as to cause operation thereof when the toy is drawn over a. floor or the like.
Animal figures 10 in the form of race horses are pivotally mounted on said frame, the rear legs of said horses carrying sleeves 11 which are loosely mounted on the rear axle 7 to oscillate freely thereon, said-sleeves also serving to maintain proper lateral relations of the figures 10. The forward legs 12 of the figures 10 are pivotally connected with the cranks 8 and also carry circ-ular heads 13 let into recesses or sockets 14 formed on the inner sides of the figures 10 and pivotally secured in place by screws 15 and whereby an operative connection is establishedl between theligures 10 and the cranks 8. v r i f this arrangeniennuit will` loe/,observed that as the IVtoylis,drawn .over .the floor o-r the like, i oscillate through the action of the cranks 8 and the legs 12, and this oscillation, in conjunction with the forward movement over the floor, will closely imitate the move-V ments of galloping race horses, thus constituting' an efficient and attractive animated toy capable of economical manufacture.
In the modified form of construction illus- 't1-ated in Fig. 5, the positions of the axles 7 and 7 are reversed and the rear legs l2 of the figures 10 are attached to the cranks of the rear axle 7. The operation and visual effect is substantially the same as that already described.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for cair ing my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without vdeparting from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope ofthe appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy comprising a frame formed from a continuous piece of wire; two axles for said frame, one of said axles being in the form of a crank shaft; a sleeve embracing the other of said axles; wheels on said axles; a figure lixedly secured to said sleeve; and legs for said figure pivoted thereto and also pivoted to the crank of said crank shaft axle, substantially as described.
2. A toy comprising a frame; two axles in said frame, one of said axles being in the form of a crank shaft; wheels on said axles; the wheels on said crank shaft being attached thereto; a sleeve loosely positioned on the other axle and a figure fixedly secured to said sleeve and operatively connected with said crank shaft, substantially as described.
3. A toy comprising a frame formed from a continuouspiece of Wire; two axles for said frame, one of said axles being in the form of a crank shaft; a sleeve embracing the ligures 210 v.will be caused to,
the other of said z xles; wheels on said axles; a figure ixedll;7 secured to said sleeve; a socket formed in said figure; and legs for said fi ure pivotedin Said socket and also pivote to the crank of said crank shaft axle, substantially as described.
4. A toy comprising a Wheeled frame; axles in said frame, one of said axles being in the form of a double crank shaft; oppositely disposed i ures pivoted on the other of said axles; socets formed in each of said figures; and legs for said fi res mounted in said sockets and pivoted to tile cranks of said crank shaft axle, substantiallyY as described.
5. A toy comprising a wheeled frame formed from a single plece of'wire; axles in PAUL C. GIEGLER.
