Description
c. CHRISTENSEN.
DRAWER ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR 30, I92!- Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
I all' 1 UNITED stares CHRIST CHRISTENSEN, OF KENO$HA, WISCONSIN.
DRAWER ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed March 30, 1921. Serial No. 457,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-Inisr CHmsTnNsnN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at lienosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer Attachments for Beds; and I do hereby de- (:lare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention aims to economize space in living quarters and provide for the storage of apparel, bed clothing and other articles usually placed in cloests, wardrobes, bureaus and the like. 7
In close quarters, such as small apartments, space is at a premium and the present invention provides for the utilization of such space to the best possible advantage.
Beds usually occupy a relatively large amount of room because of their extent and the space therebelow is ordinarily lost or if utilized receives boxes and other receptacles containing articles for future use. The floor being thus occupied cannot be conveniently kept clean from lint, dust and kindred accumulations.
The present invention provides a drawer and supporting means for attachment thereof to a bed whereby to utilize the space below the bed bottom without obstructing the floor to such an extent as to preclude the ready and convenient cleaning thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and su est themselves as the nature P of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet diti'erent conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
I Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a side view of a bed provided with a drawer attachment embodying the invention,
Figure 2 showing the in side view,
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the drawer and supporting means,
Figure 4: is a detail view of a hanger,
is a transverse section of the bed, drawer and supporting means Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the drawer rests or slides, and
Figure 6 is a sectional detail on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
' Corresponding and like parts are referred to in. the following description and desig nated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The bed illustrated is of the metal type and has been selected because the invention is particularly designed for beds of this type.
The numeral 1 designates the side rails of the bed and said rails are of L-form in cross section, The supporting means for the drawer embodies four hair which are substantially alike in construction and arrangement, hence a detail description of one only will be given. Eaohof the hangers comprises complemental members 2 and having adjustable connection whereby to adapt the attachment for different requirements. The member 2 is provided at its upper end with a book a which en ages over a rail 1. A bracket 5 is secured to the upper portion of the member 2 and is disposed below the horizontal wing of the rail and acts jointly with the hook a to prevent displacement of the hanger after the parts have been placed in position. The members 2 and 3 preferably consist of straps or bars of metal and have corresponding openings 6 in their length to provide for lengthening or shortening of the hanger as conditions may require. Bolts 7 or analogous fastening means secure the members 2 and 3 in the required adjusted position by passing through registering openings thereof. Bars 8 connect corresponding hangers upon opposite sides of the bed. These bars are adjustable to admit of ready adaptation of the attachment for different sized beds. The bars 8 are of sectional formation and each of the sections has a longitudinal slot 9 to receive a bolt 10 or other fastening whereby to secure the sections in the required adjust ed position.
Angle bars 11 are attached to the bars 8 and constitute rests or slides for the drawer. Hooks 12 are attached to the angle bars 11 and engage over the upper edge portions of the bars 8 and retain the angle bars in position., Tie bars 13 connect opposite angle bars 11 and hold them in proper position.
A drawer 14 is slidable on the horizontal wings of the angle bars 11 and is movable transversely of the bed and adapted to be drawn outward from either side thereof. For this purpose, the draw 14lprovided at each end with a handle The drawer 14 is oi a length corresponding; to toe Width of the bed. it will thus fie understood that the some is capricious and adapted rece ve Wearing apparel Without necessitating the folding of the same. A cover 16 extends over the top (it the drawer and along: opposite sides thereof and irecticelly excludes dust, lint, and so to i from drawer. The cover prefe ably consists of sheetmetal and the drawer 14: made up of like meteriul. It will thus be understood that all the parts oi the attachment are of metal and hould occasion require. the parts may be stiffened or reinforced for durability and strength.
The invention provides an attachment whereby space ordinarily lost is utilized to advantage for storing Wearing apparel and bed clothing; and sundry articles usually stored in Wardrobes, bureaus closets and the like. lVioreover the space below 21 bed bottom is utilized for storage purposes Without obstructing the floor and interfering With proper cleaning of the floor beloW the bed.
VVhet is claimed is:
1.111 a bed, means for supporting a of the hers an drawer beneath the bottom thereof comprising spacer, bars, and drawer rests pro yided t intervals in their length With hooks i'or en sing O- the upper edge portions d retaining the rests in position.
2, in p 2. bed, menus for supporting a drawer beneath the bottom thereof including, b drawer rests supported by means of said bars. and tie members connecting said rests and holding them in predetermined position.
3. In a bet udjusteble henpgers engaging the side rails thereof, adjustable burs coir necting corresponding hangers upon opposite sides of the bed, angle ha rs constituting rests provided at intervals in their length with hooks engaging over upper edge portions. of said hers, tie members connecting the angle hers, and a, drawer slidably mounted upon the horizontal Wings of the angle bars.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
