Description

l H. H. BROOKER.
TANK CLOSURE LOCK. PPLICATION FILED JULY 17, 1919- 1,407,922, Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Invent 311% Ami, v. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
HOWARD H. BROOKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TANK-CLOSURE LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
' considerable portion of the gasoline, or from being removed and the gasoline taken from the tank by unauthorized persons.
Although I have described my device in I connection with an automobile, it will be apparent that it can be used upon any container on which it is desired to lock the closure. v
My invention has for its further object to provide a locking device which will not only be keyless but which can be operated by hearing so that it can be opened in the dark aswell as in the light. I
My means of accomplishing the foregolng objects may be more readily understood by d having reference to the accompanying draw- 30 ings which are hereunto annexed. and are a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 isa side elevation of an automobile having a tank equipped with my improved closure.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line22 in Fig.3. 1
Fig. 3 is a top or plan view. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 -4 in Fig. 2. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description. As shown in the drawin the tank 10, has secured to its upper wa 11, an annular plate 12 which is provided with an upwardly extending stem or neck 13, the external surface of which is provided with threads 14, which are fitted to and coincide with internal threads 15 out upon the wall of the ca 16. .This cap has secured to the inner wal Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 28 1922 Application filed .Tnly 17, 1919. Serial No. 811,436.
engage with a spring-pressed detent so that each of the notches will click as it passes the detent, .in this manner making it posslble to unlock theclosure in the dark, for example if the combination is 35-7 the knob 18 will be turned'three clicks to the right, five clicks to the left, seven clicks to the right and then back, which movement Wlll retract the bolt 19. A plurality of inwardly projectlng lugs 20 are formed on the inside of the neck 13 and are adapted to eng e the bolt 19 when it is projected out- -war y, this eifectually rpreventing the rotation @0f the cap 16 until the bolt 19 has been retracted. These lugs are formed in spaced relation so as to permit the screwing of the cap 16 tightly upon the neck 13. 7
It may be found desirable in practice to mount a gasket 21 of .suitable material intermediate the upper edge of the neck 13 and the inner surface of the cap 16. As
shown Ihave provided the cap with ends I 22 and 23, to permit the screwing of the cap tightly upon the neck, but it will be.
obvious to person skilled in the art, that this is not'a necessary part of the invention as the upper wall ofthe' dependin portlon of the .cap may be knurled so t at it canbe readily tightened upon the threads 14.
The operation of the device is as follows: The bolt 19 being retracted the gasket 21 is'placedin position, the threads 15 caused to engage the threads 14 .when the cap is rotated until it is drawn down to a point where the upper edge of the neck or stem 13 will press the gasket tightly against the top wal of the cap. The knob 18 is then rotated projecting the' bolt 19 outwardly when the continued rotation of the knob 18 throws the combination, thus preventing the retraction, of the bolt- 19 until the proper combination is thrown.
It will be apparent from description that it is quite impossible for the cap to become accidentally dislodged when the foregoing the bolt is thrown and also that it prevents the removing of the cap by unauthorized persons.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a receptacle, of a stem mounted thereon having a passage leading to the interior thereof, threads cut on the outer wall of said stem, a cap to close the passage, threads cut on the internal walls of the cap which are fitted to and,v coincide with the threads on the stem, a plurality of spaced inwardly extending lugs on the inside of the stem, means on said cap to assist in screwing it tightly on the stem, a lock bolt carried by the cap which when projected into a space intermediate said lugs, prevents j ected osition. 2. Til
spaced inwardly extending lugs on the inside ofvthe stem, means on said cap to assist in screwin it tightly on the stem, a lock bolt carried %y the cap which when projected into a space intermediate said lugs, prevents the rotation of said cap, means, to project and retract the said bolt, and means to rigidly hold said bolt in a projected position.
3. The combination with a receptacle, of a I on the inside of the crating to prevent bolt, except when the means are in a pre-destem mounted thereon having a passage leadmg to the interior thereof, threads cut on the outer Wall of said stem, a cap to close the passage, threads cut on the internal walls of the cap which are fitted to and coincide with the threads on the stem, a washer intermediate the top of the stem and the ca a plurality of spaced inwardly extending ugs stem, means on said cap to assist in screwing it tightly on the stem, 0.
- lock bolt carried by the cap, which when projected into a space intermediate said lugs, prevents the rotation of said cap, means to project and retract said bolt, said means opthe movement of said termlned position. a
4. A closure for a receptacle provided with threads: adapted to engage threads on the receptacle, a plurality of spaced inwardly extending lugs, on said receptacle, a bolt on said closure, which when projected, enters a space intermediate said lugs, a permutation lock carried by said closure retract, and' lock said bolt to project and when projected.
