FREDERICK HENRY RUNDALL, `OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
l'reim-Locri.
Specification of Letters'latent.
' Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed September 5, 1919. Serial No. 321,762.
resident of the city of Fall River, in the' county of Bristol and yState of Massachu- "setts, have invented a new and Improved Tank-Look, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements 1n .tank locks, and more particularly to means for locking the caps or plugs of gasolene tanks on' automobilesfan object of the invention being 'to provide a device of the character stated which ,will prevent the theft of gasolene While the car is st-anding in garages orelsewhere, as the cap or plugcan be removed'only by an authorized person with the proper key.
A further object is to provide a cap with an improved-lock which prevents turning of the cap toy unscrew the same, and which improvement. can be utilizedlpn all forms of removable cap closing the inlet to the tank. Y
VVi-th these and other objects in view, the
invention consists 1n certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as Will be morefully hereinafter described and pointed out in the*` claim. I .p I In the accompanylng drawings l Figure 11s a view in vertical section illus- 7 trating my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a View 1n section on' the line 2-2- of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view. p
l represents a gasolene tank, having the ordinary inlety spout 2, externally screwthreaded at its upper end, as shown at 3, to receive the internally screwthreaded cap 4.
The cap 4 has a central opening 5 receiving a lock casing 7., the latter having a bolt casing 8 at its inner end. A plate 9 securedV to the bolt casing 8 is secured to the cap 4 by screvvs 16, which project through the plate and are lscrewed into the cap, as clearly shown in Fig. Il`
A sliding bolt `10 is movablein bolt casing 8 and When projected -lies in the path of internal lugs 11 .y integral With spout 2, to prevent turning of the cap.
The bolt 10 is operated by a lever 12 Which is held in its extreme positions by a spring 13 and a rotary barrel 14 is carried by casing 7 and' has a key-hole therein to receive the proper key to turn the same.
It isof course to be understood that the barrel 14 will be provided with suitable means to permit the operation of the proper key only and I may employ any form of lock mechanism desired to control the operation ofthe bolt.
When the cap 4 is screwed down, the bolt 1,0 is operated by thel lock to position the Aend of the bolt in the path of the lugs 11 so that the cap cannot be turned to unscrew the same until the bolt is Withdrawn by the operation of the lock. y
Various slight changes might be made in the general form of the parts described Without' departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myselfto the precise details set forth, butconsider myself at liberty to make such slight changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended cla-im. v
The combination with a tank having an outer externally threaded cylindrical spout thereon and a threaded cap adapted to be screwed over the end of ,thespout of a series of lugs fixed to the inner face of the spout, a plate spaced from the top of the cap, abolt casing carried by the plate, a lock casing carried by the cap, a sliding bolt in the bolt casing, a rotary barrel in the look casing having a key hole therein, a lever operated by the barrel and operating the sliding bolt to move it into engagement with said lugs, a spring holding the lever in its extreme ositions, said barrel adapted to be operated Ey an operating means inserted through the top of the cap and said cap adapted to be locked on the 'spout when either partially or entirel' screwed home.
. F EDERICK HENRY RUND-ALL.
