COOKING RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 28,* 1922 Application led April 21, 1919. Serial No. 291,668. y
To aZZwLo/m, t may cof/wcm.: Y
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. Por, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oI Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking Ranges, ci which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in cooking ranges, and has 'for its object to provide a new and improved form of range, of the type shown in my copending application Serial No. 98,532, tiled June 15, 1916.
The object of my invention is to provide a. range containing one or more ovens spaced from the surrounding casing so as to provide circulation spaces :tor the passage ot the heated gases around the oven or ovens, and to provide passages I'or air, which is delivered to the fire-box commingled with the flame and products of combustion to enhance the combustion, these passages being so ar-y ranged as to preheat such air prior to its delivery at the combustion point.
These and other objects of the invention will be more fully set Iorth and described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken along the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings, in which--` 10 designates, generally, a casing provided with a top 10a, ends 101?, bottom 10, and front 10e. Located in the casing are the ovens 11 and 12 extending` Jfrom front to back and spaced at their sides, top, and bottom from veach other and from the casing to provide circulation spaces Jfor the heating gases. Located at one end of the casing is the firebox 18 and ash pit 14C, a grate 15 separating these two elements. The tire-box is provided with inner walls 13a, 13b, spaced from the side wall of the oven 12 and end wall 10b of the casing, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby orming air passages or chambers 16 and 17 closed at the top by portions 13c and 13d, respectively, save Jfor apertures 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ash-pit is similarly provided with walls 141, 111" coplanar with the inner walls 13a and 13b,respectively, of the iire-boX, thereby forming continuations of the air chambers or passages 16 and 17, as shown in Fig. 1.
in the'ire-boX 13, air will be drawn through the port 25a, through the passage 25 in thc direction of the arrows, and will flow upwardly through the chambers 16 and 17, and outwardly through the apertures 2O across the iiame in the lirebox. I have "found that by supplyingpre-heated air in this manner the efliciency of the combustion in the tire-box is so greatly enhanced as to approach perfection, and the consumption of coal is reduced to an unbelievable minimum. It will be apparent that the air flowing through the passage 25'will be pre-heated, owing to its proximity to the current of heat gases iowing beneath the bottom of the ovens, and will at the same time serve asy an insulating medium to protect the floor from the heat of the range, thereby overcoming the objections to present-day ranges, which so often cause fires. This pre-heating is in creased during the flow of this combustionenhanced air upwardly through the chambers 16 and'l?, especially where they lie on each. side of the fire-box, so that this air is heated to a very considerable degree at the time it flows through theV apertures.
An exhaust pipe 30 is provided at the back of the range, and a baiileplate 31 extends partially beneath the oven 12 to ensure maximum circulation oi' the How of heating gas beneath said oven. To increase the draft 'when stirring the fire, I provide a damper 32 controlled by a rod 33 and lever E34-see Fig. 1. Vhen this damper is open in starting a tire, a shortk course is provided for the products of combustion, the circulation around the ovens being-eliminated until the lire has' reached the proper stage, when the dampers may be shut.
It will bel apparent that my invention is susceptible of modiiication and improvement, and I do not, therefore, wish tobe vrestricted to the form shown, savek as defined in the appended claim.
In combination, a range comprising a casing, an oven therein, a lirebox, air chambers adjacent said fire box, one on each side tliereat the other end of said passage, one for each of, and an air-heating passage extending of said chambers, the latter being provided along the bottom olf-said range substantially with openings leading' into said lire box 10 from end to end of said easing and provided aboverthe normal level of the fuel therein.
5 with an inlet at one end communicating with In testimony whereof, I have subscribed the atmosphere exterior of said casing and my name. beneath the latter, and a plurality of outlets ROBERT L. POE.
