, UNITED STATES JOHN-MIDDLETON BUTTER, OF GUILDFORD, ENGLAND.
RANGE OR, STOVE.
Application filed August 31, 1921 Serial No. 497,410.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MIDDLETON BUTTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Inglenook, Aldershot Road, Guildford, Surrey, England,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ranges or Stoves (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, 165533,
30th March, 1921), of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved domestic range or stove utilizing one fire for cooking, heating water for radiators and domestic use, and in one modification providing an open fire in a room adjoining that in which the cooking takes place.
According to this invention, a stove is constructed comprising a boiler extending round three sides of the fire having perpendicular flue tubes passing through it and having above the said boiler an oven and hot plates so arranged that the hot gases after passing through the flue tubes of the boiler, pass into the oven fines and heat the oven.
The invention will be thoroughly understood if reference is made to the accompany ing drawings, in which 0 igure 1 is a vertical section of a stove provided with boiler, oven flues, lifting grate, fire bars, ash box, and dampers in accordance with my invention. a
Figure 2 is a section plan showing how boiler surrounds the fire flues passing thru the boiler. The stove, oven hot plate flues and fittings and boiler may be made of wrought or cast iron or other sutiable material.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the boiler.
The fire front is formed of firebars attached to suitable framework, which may be surrounded by any form of finish or decoration in the manner of ordinary fire places.
The boiler is formed with one or more vertically disposed tubular lines of any suitable section. The hot gases may be made to pass b an arrangement of dampers down any or all the tubes and pass under and upwards on the outer side of boiler on their passage to chimney.
The drawings, 1 and 2 show the tubes on one side of fire only, but others are made with flue tubes on both sides of fire, where more powerful boilers are required as diagrammatlc view shown in Figure 3.
Bollers extending round three sides of the fire in a domestic range, and havingvertical flue tubes through them are known, and no claim to such boilers themselves is made.
The oven and hot plate are so arranged that they can be effectively utilized for cooking purposes at the same time as the hot gases are being drawn through the boiler tubes to heat water, but the dampers are so arranged that the hot gases can be prevented from passing through boiler tubes when not required to do so.
The boilers represented in the drawing are open at the front and top.
Similar letters and numerals of reference throughout the illustrations indicate corresponding parts as follows W W W are water spaces, 7) are flue tubes passing through boiler from top to bottom round which the water circulates, b are flues. The front bars a are removable. d is a main controlling damper in chimney fiue. f is space above fire and boiler and under hot plate Z. 9 is a swing damper to shut perpendicular boiler flue when horizontal, so that flame can proceed directly round oven. When this damper is turned up in a perpendicular position the flames and hot gases pass down boiler flue tubes before passing round outer side of oven 0 to chimney. Z is removable ring in hot plate. 12 is air space under front firebars and ashpit. r is the fixed frame-work with winder cog through which 1' the vertical bar with teeth rises are falls. This bar is attached to fire grate and enables the fire to be raised or lowered at will. 8 are soot boxes or cleaning doors.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of United States of America is 1. A stove comprising, in combination, a boiler forming the back and two sides of a fire place, a plurality of flue tubes passing through the boiler, a hot plate over the fire place for deflecting the flames and hot gases from the fire place down the flue tubes of the boiler, another flue at the outer side of the boiler, communicating with the said flue tubes of the boiler, an oven above the boiler, a fine around the oven in connection with the side flue communicating with the flue tubes of the'boiler and means for supporting the boiler, the hot plate andthe oven in their relative positions. j
2. A stove comprising, in combination, a boiler forming the back and two sides of a fire place, a plurality of flue tubes passing through the boiler, a hot plate over the fire place for deflecting the flames and hot gases from the fire place down the flue tubes of the boiler, another flue at the outer side of the boiler, commnnicatingrwith the :said flue tubes of theboiler, an ovenabove the boiler,
a line around the oven in connection with the sidefiuescommunicating With the flue tubes ot the boiler, means for supporting the boiler, the hot plate and the oven in their relative positions and a damper arranged to direct the hot gases either down through the boiler tubes and subsequently up around the oven, or to direct said gases around the oven 20 ithout passing through the boiler tubes.
In witness whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN MIDDLETON BUTTER.
