WILLrAM H. EDWARDS, or GRAND RAPrDs, MiCHIGLN, l
l nxrANsinLR AND ooNrRAcrARLR LEAF BINDER AND eovRRIpNe MEMBER THRRFQR Application filed February 18, 1921. Serial No. 446,033.
To all whom z5 may concern:
Beit known that-I, WILLIAM H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Expansible and Contractablev Leaf Binders and Covering MembersTherefor, of which the following is a specilication. f
The present invention relates to expansible and contractable leaf-binders and covering members therefor, and its object is to provide such a device which as an entirety may be readily adapted to greater or less thicknesses of the body of leaves held thereby; and further, to provide such a device improved in various respects hereinafter appearing.
This object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an endwise view of the opened device, partially sectioned on line 1-1 of Figure 2; and
lfigure 2 is an inside view or top plan View of the same in the position shown in Figure 1.
ln the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawings and for detailed description in the body of this specilication, the leaves composing the leaf body 1 are held in the device by flexible binding means, as the bands 2 extending through the usual slots or notches in the binding edge of the leaves, said binding means being carried by the oppositely disposed covers 3, 4 of the expansible and contractable leafbinder, designated generally 5. Means for securing the bands in a position to accommodate and properly hold the leaf body are securing means being in the construction illustrated the clamping elements 6 pivotally mounted at 7 on the covers and having the cam portions 8 adapted to clamp the bands to the covers and to release the same by turning the arms 9 of said elements. Any suitable securing means or band adjust-ing and securing means may however be adopted to hold the bands in desired adjustment, and the bands may be anchored at one end on one cover and the securing means may be carried by the other cover only. In Vthe construction illustrated these bands pass through the guides 30 on the covers and through the binding strips 10 eitherlside ySpecification of Letters Patent.-v ;Patented]feb,il4,
of the leaf body'andf'havingfly yleaf exten-"j sions 11, the free ends of the bands being'v connected by cross bars 12.
One of the covers y3 'has av sheath or opening 13, open toward the other cover 4, and" said other cover 4 hasa flexible 4extension or `sheet portion 14 contained in and slid'able 7 in said' sheath 13. A covering member 15 adapted to lie outside andfadjacentto-the cover-4 in the' closed position of the device,
has a flexible extension 16 connected to the flexible extension 14 at 17 and slidable therewith in the sheath 13.y When the covers 3, 4 are adjusted to the thickness of the leaf body, the flexible extensions 14, 16 are slidV in the sheath to a position registering with the thickness of the leaf body between and held by the covers, and as the device is opened and closed these flexible extensions 14, 16 are flexed with the bands 2.
VThe covering member 15 may have at its free end flexible means, as the strap 19 for detachably connecting the same with the free end of the cover 3 as by passing through the loop E20-on the outside of said cover; and a flexible strap 21 on the outer side of the cover 3 and the outer side of the covering member 15 and slidably connected to at least one of them, as by passing through the guides 22, may also be provided, for more securely holding the device closed or for carrying the same.
Any type of means for holding the leaves and for adjusting the covers thereto may be adopted in the broader aspects of this invention.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In device of the character described; an expansible and contractable leaf-binder having oppositely disposed covers one of which has a sheath opening toward the other cover and said other cover having a flexible extensionslidable in the sheath; a covering member having a exible extension connected to the first-mentioned slidable extension and slidable within the sheath.
2. In a device of the character described; an expansible and contractable leaf-binder having flexible binding means extending through the leaves held therein and means 3. Inadeviceof they character described;
an:- expansible and eontra'ctable leaf-binder having .oppositelv n disposed covers one of -Whioh has a sheathvopening toward the other cover and said other cover having aflexible extension slidable: in the sheath; a covering member having a flexible extension connected to the first-mentioned slidable extensionyflexible means for detachably connecting thefree end of the covering member with the free end of the first-mentioned cover. A
4f. In device of the character described;`
an expansible andcontractable leafbinder 'having oppositely'disposed covers one of which has a sheathopening toward theother cover and said other coverliavingl a flexible extension slidable in the sheath; a covering member `having a flexible extension connectedvto the A.first-mentioned slidable extension; flexible means for detachably oonmeeting the free -end ofthe coveringmember with the free end yof the first-mentioned cover; a flexible strap on the outer side of the first-mentioned cover and on `the outer .side Jof the covering memberand slidably connectedrto at least one `of them.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grandilapids, Michigan, this 14th day of February, 1921. f
