In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far dethereof vised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side View of a loose leaf binder embodying my invention, a portion of the leaves being broken away to expose the fiexible post member;

Figure 2 is a perspective View of the loose leaf binder in open position with the leaves omitted and parts thereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate structural details Figure v3 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the binder in the act of being closed, and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary .perspective view of a cover carried plate member to which are secured the apertured members forming a part of the hinge connection between the covers and back.

Referring now more particularly to the I accompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the covers of a loose leaf binder which are 'hingedly connected to a back 6. A plate. member 8 is secured to each cover member in any suitable manner adjacent its inner edge and has a portion extended therebeyond and foldedon itself, as at 9, to provide a channel 10 extending across the length of the plate member, for the purpose later described.

Secured to the, plate members at spaced intervals by spot welding or other means are hinge members 11 each formed of bendable metal" medially offset to have one end engaging the folded portion 9 of the plate, as at 12, and curled, as at 13, to provide an aperture 14, the aperture 14 of the hinge members ofeach member 8 being approximately in line with the center of its channel 10. The members 11 cooperate with like members 15 extended from the edges of the back 6 to be positioned between the members 11 and receive a rod 16to hingedly connect the covers with the back.

The folded inner edge of each portion 9 is cut away at three places, as at 17, to provide openings throughfwhichthe adjacent ends of. substantially flexible binder posts 18 extend to be pivotally and releasably connected with the adjacent cover by members 19 slidably mounted within the channel 10. The members 19 have their inner edges cut away, as at 20, adjacent each opening 17 and have an extension 21 extended from one end of each cutaway portion 20 to extend into an, aperture in the adjacent post member as the member 19 is shifted longitudinally in the channel, one end of each member 19 being provided with an tip-turned portion 22 to facilitate its movementin its channel.

The members 11 being stepped, and having an end extended over the folded port1on'9' reinforces the same and preventslts spread ing from the plate 8.

As is described in the aforementioned: Letters Patent, closingthe-covers forces the post members to-assume a concave position, as illustrated in Figure 1, this being accomplished by struck out portions 23 which engage the post members as showninFigureB.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it :will'bereadily apparent to thoseskilled' in the art to whichan: invention of the character described appertains, that I have provided aloose leaf binder of thetype described in which the fallacy of the usual leather hinge is entirely eliminated and in which an improved means-for connecting the-post members with thecovers is provided.

\Vhat I claimas my invention is 1. In a loose leaf binder of the'character described, a back, covers, platemembers carried by the covers,-the inner ends of the plate members beingfolded upon themselves toprovidea tubular-portion, the inner edge of whichi is cut; away at intervalsto provide openings, substantially flexible blnder 'posts having their ends provided-with loops which extend into the tubular portion of the plate members through the openings, means positioned withinthe tubular portionbfthe plate members for releasably connecting the'post members therewith, and means carried bythe plate members for hlngedly connecting the covers with the back;
