- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,324, dated June 24,1873; application filed May 10, 1873.
full and exact description of the construction and operation thereof, reference being had to the annexeddrawings making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure lindicates a front view of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is=a representation of a vertical cross-section. Fig.3 is a representation of a rear view. Figs. 4 aud'.5 are horizontals'ec t onahviews. 4 This invention has relation to certain im- 3 provements in toilet-cabinets for ladies use; and it consists in the construction and novelarrangement, in connection with the cabinet, of a sewing-machine table, secretary, bookcase, m rror, folding and sliding chair, and
sliding cover to sewing-machine table, and
- made similar in size and form to the table-top G, which is designed to be semicircular. The top 0 and bottom B are connected by the par- 7 allel plain partition-walls E E extending fromfront to rear of the case on. eachside of the center, by the plain partition-wall .G' at I. right aligns with the walls E E, and by the curvedvertical side walls H. The side walls H. are double, and have between them hollow chambers for the reception of the horizontallysliding curved doors I when they are thrown open. The partition Gdivides the spaces between the. partitions E E" into front and rear' chambers. The front central chamber K is designed for the reception of the folding-chair,and..
the chamber K on each side of. it is provided witha set of drawers, K". The rear central chamber L should be provided with shelves L, and the chambers L, at each side of the central chamber, with the weights a, by which the doors I are drawn back .into the recesses of the-curved side walls, pulleys b being arranged for the passage of the suspending-cords e, which extend across the tops of the chambers M, immediately under the table-top. The chambers M lie between the curved side walls and the plane walls E, opening to the rear.
They may bepro'vided with suitable shelving. These rear chambers are designed to be closed by means of doors 'N, hinged at the edge in the ordinary manner. The table-top G suitably-recessed or slotted at d for the reception ,0! a sewing-machine. In rear of this slot the top is rectangnlarly recessed at e, to receive the back wall of the folding-cm er P when folded down. Thiswallfishinged to the table-top at the forward 'edge of this recess by its lower edge, and by its upper edge to the rear leaf got the circular front wall h.
Parallel with the 'side uprights D are arranged the inner ertical wallsD, at each end of the table-cover P, the spaces between these walls and the end walls beingoccupied by sets of drawers, which may be fixed or hinged, as at k, in the set Q, to be'swung around forward in such a manner as to expose the rear drawers lof the set. When those sets Q R of drawers are hinged, the walls D form portions of their frames, and are not rigidly attached to the cabinet-frame. To the front edges of the walls D ,.whether fixed or movable, are hinged the sides S of the cover P. These sides are provided with narrow lipsm on their front or curved edges 10, designed to fit insuitable grooves o, in the frontor curved walls of the table-cover. The transverse-board E is arranged with a suitable parallel-board, or with guide-strips to support a drawer, P, in which is packed a felding-desk, Z,'consisting of two leaves, 2 z, hinged together, and the hinged standards n. One of the leaves z is hinged to the front -wall of the drawer P. Above the transverse board E is arranged centrally a pivoted mirror, Y, the journals of which are connected with the inild'e walls Q of the book and pigeon-hole cases It. These cases are provided with suitable doors 3 and their tops 1" screw, n. g v the folding end 01 to the seat ohthe chair, to
may be provided with edge-strips s", and serveas shelving for books or other articles. Z" designates the folding-chair. Its pedestal consists of three legs, of which two, I, are laterally located, and'one, l, is placed in rear. The legs I are'hinged to a sliding base,a,
I grooved near the side edges on its upper surface. for engagement with the guide-flanges b, which are secured to the wall of the chamber K. The rear leg I is jointed ate,- thefolding end d being forked, usually, to secure a better foundation, when unfolded and resting on the floor. The seat 0 is pivoted to the pedestal, and is provided with a hinged .or pivoted back, j, which is designed to be folded down on the seat when the latter is pushed into the chamber K. A small spring,
is seated in the frame of the seat e, under the back f, to prevent rigidity, and give ease to the -occupant. W'hen theseat is not in use it is designed to be pushed back into the chamber K, the back I and the leg I being folded for this purpose. The doors of this chamber may then be drawn together and secured. The seat of this chair'is designed to be elevated or depressed by means of'a A spring, m, is used to connect keep it folded up close when not in use. The curved doors I are opened by pressing downward on the button of the vertical releaserod Q7", kept up, when not under pressure, by a spring. This action depresses the catchsprings w and releases the catches or shoulders w in the bottom or top of the doors,
thereby allowing the weights to fall, drawing the doors back into their recesses. The lefthand case of drawers at the side of the tabletop is preferably made to turn outward on hinges, as above described, in order to give room for the work when the sewing-machine I is in operation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The circular or segment-shaped cabinetrecessed at e, for the reception of a sewing- .machine, and the chamber K with guides b forthe reception of a folding and adjustable chair, Z, having the sliding base a, substantially as specified.
ber K- having guides b, of the chair Zthaving the folding-back f spring g, adjustable pivoted seat a, hinged legs Z, sliding base a and folding rear leg 1, substantially as specified.
3. The combination and arrangement, in the -segmentshaped casing, of the curved sliding doors I, weights a, pulleys b, cords 0, springcatches x, hooks or shoulders w, and springrelease v, substantially as specified.
turning outward, and bearing the folding sector-shaped side S, in connection with the sewing-machine table 0, the folding-cover having the curved hinged wall h, and the opposite hinged sector-shaped side S, substantially as specified.
O. B. DAvIscase, having the table-top G slotted at d and 2. The combination, with the cabinet-charm,
4. The cabinet having the hinged case Q a 5. The drawer P and the" folding-desk Z
