PRESS FOR SQUEEZING SAND IN FLASKS.
Application filed July 2, 1920.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SoHUL'rls, a citizen vof the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Press for Squeezing Sand in Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a press, and more particularly in a 'press of the type used for pressing or squeezing sand in flasks preliminary to removing' the patterns for casting operations, and it is especially designed to effect pressing or squeezing of the sand either by hand or power as the operator of the machine may elect or the conditions at the time of use may require. Compressed air is used as the power medium and the application of power by hand is through a lever, and if the use of compressed airis dispensed' with forany considerable period of time the operator may readily disconnect the power parts and avoid the labor off actuating said parts while operating the machine through the medium of the hand lever. The squeezing plate is adjustably mounted on a swinging arm which is in turn adjustably supported upon a vertical post, and the table which is used to support mold upwardly toward the squeezing plate.
In the drawing accompanying this application, Figure 1 is a side view of the complete machine with the table lowered and ready to receivea flask. Fig. 2 -is a front view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal secion on line 3-3, Fig. l, excepting the cylinder which is shown'in plan. Fig. 4L is a plan view Aof the machine.` Fig. 5 is a -central vertical section of the machine, showing the piston disconnected and the table elevated by the hand lever. Fig. 6 is a sideview and section showing the pist-on connected and in a forward position with the table elevated.
The machine comprises a base plate 2 to which a pair of I-beams 3 are bolted in .parallel `upright position, and a round post 4 extends above said beams and has a rectangular portion 5 seated between the flanges thereof and bolted rigidly thereto. The base plate 2 and lower vportion of the beams may be embedded in a cement floor, or these parts may be supported in an upright position in Specification of Letters Patent.
any practical Way, but as constructed and set up these parts provide a very simple, strong and cheap support for a vertically "moi'able table G, a horizontally-reciprocable piston 7 and a swinging arm plate 9 which is adapted trally above the table.
Piston 7 is confined within a cvlinder 10 having a stufling box 11 at one end where bolted to the rea-r side of I-beams 3, and the an open hook 13 screwed within-its end and thc rod is adapted to reciprocate horizontally between and parallel to the sides of the two I-beanis. Piston 7 is 8 for a presser to be placed cendouble acting, that is, it is adapted to be operated in opposite directions when compressed air is passed alternately into the opposite ends of the cylinder through pipes 111 and 15 and which connect with a 3-way or other suitable valve 16 within convenient reach of the operator. As shown, valve 16 is supported by a bracket 17 at the front of av cast-iron saddle 18 whichis bolted in a straddling position to the front side of the I-beams 3'directly opposite cylinder' 10. Table 6 is supported by a vertical stem 19 which is slidably mounted in bearings 20 of saddle 18, and separate pairs of toggle links 20-20 are pivotally supported on pivot pins 21 fixed to the sides of the saddle and to a pivot pin or pins 22 extending through the hub of the table. Then these toggle links are caused to straighten the table is forced upward, and this action may be brought about by the movement of the piston and a link 23 which is adapted to connect with the toggle pin 34. Thus, link 23 is in the form of a yoke and has a cross pin 35 adapted to be detachably engaged wit-h the hook 13 of piston rod l2, see Figs. 3 and 6', and whendisconnected from the hook the table may be elevated by hand power without .taxing the operator to move the piston back and forth within the cylinder. It is not absolutely necessary to disconnect the piston but it is desirable to do so when hand operation is continually practised.
Operation by hand is through the medium of a hand lever 36 which is socketed in an olf-set 37 on a. rock arm 38 pivoted at 39 at one side of saddle 18. Thus, rock arm 38 has an inclined or cam slot 40 within which one end of toggle pin 34; extends and is adapted to ride, and when the lever is drawn forward and downward, the toggles are straightened and the table elevated exactly in the same way as when the piston operates. However, when the lever is iforced back to lower the table it is also desirable that it be thrown back fai' enough to be out of the way in removing or replacing the iiask. To that end a curved slot 41 is provided in the rock arm 38 to allow the rock arm to swing rearwardly without actuating the toggle pin 34, and when the rock arm andvlever are in this retired position the table is locked against movement. On the other hand when operating with compressed air the lever may be withdrawn from its socket to avoid striking the operator, and locking of the Vrock-ariii is prevented b-y placing a pin or bolt 37 across the entrance oi slot 41, see Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
