Application filed April 18, 1922; Serial No. 55 1Jl80.
a car equipped with the device forming the suhiect matter of this application; Figure is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1:. Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2. I
The numeral 1 designates the wall of a freightcar, the floor appearing at 2. and the sill at 8, the sill. constituting a part of the framework of the car. The usual slidcooperates with a-lreeper 5.
In carrying out the invention, a keeper 6 is attached hy'securing elements 7 to the sill 3 and is located at the rear lower corner of the door l when the door is closed. The keeper 6 comprises a bottom plate 8, an outer wall 9, an end wall 10, and an arm 11 projecting from the'end wall 10, the arm extending parallel to the direction in which the door slides. There is a vertical. transverse opening 12 in the arm 11, alined with an opening 35 in the hottom plate 8.
The inner lower corner of the door 4t is straddled by a U-shaped bracket l l having an opening 15 adapted to receive the arm 11 of the keeper 6 when the door 4 is closed. the bracket projecting downwardly below the lower edge of the door 4. The bracket 14 is held on the door 4 by securin members 16 and 17. A guide pin 18 in inserted into the rear edge of the door l and has a head spaced from therear edge of the door. The guide pin 18 is rovided with a trans verse notch 20 receiving the securing mem ber 16, thesecuring member thus having a double function, in that it retains the guide pin 18, in addition to holding the bracket 14 on the door 4.
A latch 21 is mounted for vertical recipro- 545 cation onthe rear edge of the door 4 and is provided atits upper end with a finger till Figure 1 shows in elevation, a portion of ing door is marked by the numeral 4 and piece facilitating the manipulation of the latch. The latch 21' is supplied with an elongated slot 23 receiving the guide pin 18, the head 19 of the guide pin holding the latch on the edge of the door t for vertical reciprocation The latch 21- has a reduced end Zat'adapted to extend through the opening 12 in the arm 11, and through the opening 35' in the bottom plate 8 of the keeper 6, a shoulder '26 being formed on the latch, the shoulder cooperating with the arm 11 to limit the downward movement of the latch. A recess 27 is fashioned in the outer surface of the latch 21 adjacent to the shoulder 26.
The recess 27 is large enough to receive the head 19 of the guide pin 18, under circunr stances which will he pointed out hereinafter. lnthe reduced end 14 of the latch 21. an opening 25 is formed. The opening 25 is adapted to receive a seal (not shown}. in practical operation, the latch 21 1S raisedend moved to the right (Figure 3} until the head 19 of the guide pin is received in the recess 27 of the latch, the latch thus being: held elevated. The door 4 is slid to a closed position in the direction of the arrow until the arm 11 on the keeper 6 is received in the opening 15 of the bracket 14:. The latch 21 is pushed to the left (Figure 3) until the latch 19 of the guide pin 18 no longer registers in the recess 27 of the latch. The latch then is slid downwardly, until the reduced end 24 of the latch extends through the opening 12 in the arm 11 of the keeper 6, and through the opening in the hottom plate 8 of the keeper. Then, if desired, a seal (not shown) may be mounted in the opening 25 of the latch. When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 3, the. door t will he held securely against sliding movement, and the strain will be taken ed the hasp of the door.
What is claimed is z- 1. In a device of the class described, a support, a. door slidahle on the support, o bracket on the door, it keeper on the support, and a latch slidehle on the door and engageahle with the keeper, the keeper comprising a part which enge 'es the bracket, independently of the latch, to stop the movement of the door when the door is moved to a closed position.
2. In a device of the class described, a support, door slidable on the support, at hraclret on the door and heving on opening;
a. keeper mounted on the support and 1Y1- eluding e bottom member and en arm overhanging the bottom member, the arm being adapted to be received in the opening of the bracket when the door is closed, the member and the arm having openin s, and a latch slideble on the door and a. apted to enter the last specified openings.
3. In a device ofethe class described, a support; a door slideble on the support; a bracket on the door; a securing element conmeeting the bracket with the door; a keeper on the support and en aged with the bracket when the door is c osed; a guide on the door, theguide being interengeged with the securing element, to prevent withdrawal of the guide; and a latch slidable on the guide and engageeble with the keeper.
4. In a. device of the class described, a
neee ee sup ort e door slideble on the support, it gui e on the door, and. having a head, it latch sildable between the head of the uide end the door, end having an elongated slot wherein the guide is received, there being a recess in the latch, at the lower end of the slot, and adapted to receive the head of the latch, when the latch is raised and moved away from the door, and a keeper on the support, wherewith a latch engages when the latch is lowered.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
