To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEHARD PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Locks, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a window sash holder and lock structure applicable for alt-- raised position and lock it in such position against downward movement.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary section through a window structure showing the improved sash holder and lock applied.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the improved sash holder and lock showing the same in an inoperative position.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line lof Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the improved sash holder and lock comprises a carrying body or plate 1 which is adapted to be inserted in a suitable recess in a window frame, and pinned thereto by means of any suitable type of fasteningdevice which extends through the openings 2 in the body 1. The body .1 is recessed intermediate its ends and it has a locking pawl 3 pivotally mounted therein. The locking pawl 3 is provided with a cutout portion a which has communication with the pivotal pin receiving opening 5 thereof into which cutout portion 4 a suitable ear extends. The locking pawl 3 has a finger tip 6 formed thereon to facilitate its manu al operation and when used for locking a window sash as shown at A against movement the locking pawl 3 is moved by means of the finger tip 6 into the recess 7 formed in the sash A. of the-drawing the lower side of-the recess- 7 'is abrupt so that in an efiort to raise the Sash A would wedge the pawl and sash together and prevent raising movement of the sash.
The holder structure of the device com prises a wedge 10 carried by the body 1. The wedge 10 is substantially pyramidal in shape and has a plurality of teeth 12' on its outer surface which are adapted to bite into the window sash A and hold the sash against downward movement. It will be noted that the teeth 12 are inclined to present inclined surfaces to the window sash during its upward movement so as to allow the sash to be raised and to bite into the sash upon downward movement of the same. The wedge .10 is arranged with its apex downward and it has a spring carrying rod 13 pivotally connected 'to its base by a pin 14:. The spiral spring 15 is coiledabout the rod 13 and engages against the body 1 at its upper end and against a washer 15 at its lower end for urging the wedge 10 outwardly into holding position. The body 1 is provided with a guiding portion 16 which prevents lateral movement of the wedge within the body, and the wedge ,10 has a finger tip 17 formed thereon to permit manual movement of the pawl into a holding position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing or into an inoperative position as shown at Fig. 2 of the drawing. lVhen the wedge 10 is moved into an inoperative position its apex engages in a notch-18 formed in the body 1 while the inner corner of its base engages the rear of the inner-wall of the body 1, positioning the toothed side of the wedge out of position for engagement with a window sash and permit the sash to be moved freely.
The finger tips 6 and 17 project out of the recess in which the body 1 is mounted so as to permit manual operation of the sash holder and lock.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
