To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Lnn E. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgemont, in the county of Fall River and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Seals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved car seal for sealing the doors of freight cars and the like, the general object of the in vention being to provide a seal, the parts of which must be broken in order to. separate them so that it is impossible to reseal the device after the parts thereof have been once separated.

Another object of the invention is to so arrange the parts that the strap can be passed in either direction, thus saving time as it is not necessary to find out before hand just which way the strap must be passed through the lock in order to properly connect it with the holding part of the seal.

A further object of the invention is to place the numbers on both sides of the seal so that they can be read from either side without necessitating turning the seal.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in thecombination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device in sealing position.

the head and adapted to be folded around the strap and they can be folded in either directlon so that the strap can be placed on either face of the head. One tongue of each pair of tongues is adapted to'be bent in one direction and the other tongue of each pair is adapted to be bent in an opposite direction so that when the slotted end of the strap is placed on one face of the head one tongue of each pair can be placed in engagement therewith and when the strap is placed on the other face of the head the other tongue of each pair can be placed in engagement therewith. By this arrangement of parts the strap can be bent in either direction so as to engage either face of the head, thus saving time as it is not necessary to look to see which side of the head the tongues and guides are arranged on.

The cover member 9 consists of the two discs 10 and 11 which are connected to gether by the neck 12. One disc is larger than the other and the neck is provided with a slot 13 through which the strap is passed, the guides passing through said slot also so that the head 2 will rest against the neck. The disc 11 is then bent over into engagement with the disc 10 and then the disc 10 has its edges crimped over the disc 11 to lock the parts together. Each disc is provided with a groove 14 for receiving the ends of the tongues 6. The outer face of each of the discs 10 and 11 is stamped with the number of the seal and the initials of the road so that these numbers can be read from either side of the device.

From the foregoing it will be seen that it is necessary to so disfignre the parts in unsealing the car that they cannot be placed together again without showing that the device has been tampered with. The seal can be easily and quickly placed on the car so that but little time is necessary to seal the car.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A seal of the class described comprising a strap, a head at one end and a slotted part at the other end, tongues and guides on the head for engaging the slotted part of the strap, a two-part covering member for the head and slotted part of the strap which are adapted to be crimped over.

2. A seal of the class described comprising a strap having a head at one end and a slotted part at the other end, a pair of tongues on each face of the head for engaging the slotted part when the same is placed on either face of the head, guiding strips carried by the head and bendable in either direction for engaging the strap, and a two part locking member for covering the head and slotted part.

3. A seal of the class described com-prising a strap having a head at one end and a slotted part at the other end, a pair of tongues on'each face of the head, for engaging the slotted part when the same is placed on either face of the head and guiding strips on the head bendable in either direction for engaging the strap, and a two-part locking member for covering the head and slotted part, said locking member consisting of two disc-shaped members, a neck connecting the two discs together and having a slot therein for receiving the strap, one disc being larger than the other so that it can be crimped over the small disc to lock the parts together.

4. A seal of the class described comprising a strap having a head at one end and a slotted part at the other end, a pair of tongues on each face of the head for engaging the slotted part when the same is placed on either face of the head, guiding strips carried by the head and bendable in either direction for engaging the strap and a twopart locking member for covering the head and slotted part, said locking member consisting of two disc-shaped members, a neck connecting the two discs together and having aslot therein for receiving the strap, one disc being larger than the other so that it can be crimped over the small disc to lock the parts together, and a groove in each disc for receiving the ends of the tongues on the head.
