Be it known that I, MARCUS B. BEHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to means for pre venting banlrechecks and the like from being successfully alteredby erasure or otherwise,

and more especially to a small compact check protector adapted to be carried in a vest or other pocket and which is preferably incorporated in a fountain-pen structure so as to be handy for use by a person employing a pocket check-book.

In its preferred form the check protector of my invention is carried -on the closed end of a fountain-pen cap and comprises a toothed rollerl and a roller inlr'pad therefor, and when the protectoris not in use it is concealed by a supplemental cap which harmonizes with the general appearance of the fountain pen structure. The pen structure serves as a handle for the check-protector when the latter is in use, or the pen-cap alone may serve as suoliV handle. The toothed roller has a series of annular rows of teeth adapted when the roller is rolled under pressure against a check to puncture the same and thus prevent alteration'in the figures or writings on the check, and said roller while being rolled against the check also rolls against the inlrfpad and becomes inked on the ends of its teeth, with the result that while the rollerV is puncturing the check it leaves an ink impression on the check at the punctures therein, said ink impression being approximately in the form of dots corresponding with the teeth on the roller or the punctures made thereby and .cooperating with the punctures in preventing successful alteration of the check.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented reference being had to the acco1n panying drawings, in which:

rllheouter end of the cap 11 constitutes a base 12 for the features of the check protector',` and formed on the base 12 san up wardly extending cylindrical sleeve 13 which is less in diameter than the cap 11 and is externally screw-threaded, an'f'annular shoulder 14 being formed on the base 12 at the lower edge of and surrounding the threaded portion ofthe sleeve 13. Within the sleeve 13 is acup-like chamberv 15.

The other featuresoffthe check protector comprise the rotary puncturing roller 16, the rotary ink-pad roller 17,` the cylindrical frame 18 carrying saidroller 16 and positioning the roller 1,7, and the removable supplemental cap 19y adaptedto fitover and concealv the check` 'protector' features, as shown in'b'igs. 1 and hefrarae 1.8 vis egzindriealandfopen at -ioo Y both ends and is internally threaded, as at 20, to screw downwardly upon the externally threaded sleeve 13 and against the shoulder 14. The frame 18 at its extreme lower end has an external thread 21 (Fig. 7) to be engaged by an internal thread 22' (Fig. 2) on the inner surface of the lower nend of the cap 19, whereby said cap may be secured in place covering kthe check protector features, as Ashown in Fig. 3, wherein it may be seen that the cap engages the shoulder 141- and that the outerside surface of the .cap 19 is on the same plane as the side surface of the cap 11 and appears asl a continuation thereof, as shown inl-Fig. 1. c

Uien thev protector is to be used, the cap 19 is removed and thereupon the protector is ready for use, the cap 11 or the fountain pen as a whole serving as a handle therefor.

The check-protector may be a separate article of sale from the fountain-pen, since, as shown in Fig. 3, the pen properis not a necessary part ofthe protector. 1 prefer however that the cap 11 be such that it may serve for fountain-pen purposes.

My invention provides a highly efficient and very compact check protector which maybe conveniently carried on a pen or separately in ones pocket for use at any time a check may be drawn.

I have shown and described the most desirable form of my invention at present known to me, but l do not wish to be limited to all ofthe details of form and construction described, since 1 am aware that these details may be modified without departure from my invention and within the scope of the appendedV claims.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

l. A check protector comprising a handle affording on one end a base member having an annular threaded sleeve extending above the same, a cylindrical frame having a threaded lower portion engaging the thread on said sleeve and affording outwardly extending side standards, an'ink pad roller positioned within the inner portion of said frame, a pnncturing roller journal'led in said standards over and in parallelism with said pad roller and adapted to engage the same and a removable cap fitting over said frame and rollers, said puncturing roller having a series of rows of sharp pointed teeth over its surface, and said frame having grooves in its inner opposite vertical walls receiving the ends of the shaft of said pad roller, for positioning said roller, said grooves being open at their lower ends to receive said shaft and confining the same at the sides and outer extremities of the end portions thereof.
