Description

Faiented May 20, 1924..
UNITED STATES JOSEPH SETTERBER-G,
. c LOCK.
PATENT or ce. I
Application filed March 18, 1922. Serial No; 544,930.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH SETTERBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to locks, and an object of the invention is to provide a novel form of lock structure particularly designed for use in connection with motor vehicles for locking the spare tires on the vehicle, for use in connection with a chain or cable for locking the vehicle or for analogous purposes for which approved types of padlocks may be adaptable.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lock as specified which is designed and constructed so as to render it practically impossible to pry the lock open, twist it ofi or cut it with a tool such as a hack saw or bolt cutters, the improved lock comprising a pair of spherical heads having stems projecting therefrom one of which carries a locking shackle while the other stem is recessed to receive the locking shackle, the spherical head provided with the recessed stem, having a suitable locking structure therein for cooperation with said shackle to lock the shackle against longitudinal movement relative to the sphericalheads but permit independent rotary movement of one head relative to the other.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved lock.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the lock.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a detail section of a modified form.
provided with central or annular bores 4 and 5 respectively which enter into the spherical heads land 2 respectively. A
shacklefi is inserted into the bore 4 and head 1 and is securely connected to the head 1 by apin, as shown at 7 by welding or by any other suitable construction which will prevent disconnection of the shackle 6 and head 1. The'shackle 6 has its free end provided with a plurality of annular cut out portions as shown at 8 which taper inwardly to the axis of the shackle towards the free end of the shackle providing annular shoulders 9 against which'the locking bolt 10 is adapted to abut. The locking bolt 10 has its inner end beveled as shown at 11 for snugly fitting against the inclined surfaces formed by the cut out portions 8 and it is urged into engagement with said inclined surfaces and any one of the shoulders 9 by a spring 12. A pin 13 is carried by the locking bolt 10 and is adapted to be en.
gaged by the nib 14 formed upon a key 15, which key is particularly designed for cooperation with the rotatable cylinder 16' to permit the provision of a lock which can only be operated by a key cut to fit the individual lock. The shackle 6 is rotatably .seated in. the bore 5 and the engagement of the locking bolt 10 with one of the shoulders 9 and in any one of the annular cut out portions 8 will permit rotary movement of either of the heads 1 or 2 relative to the other but will prevent movement of the heads away from each other, or in a direction longitudinally of the shackle.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings a slight modification of the invention is shown in which the shackle 6 is bent, intermediate its ends as shown at 20 to position its end portions 21 and 22 at obtuse angles relative to each other. In all other respects the modified form of the lock is similar to the preferred form previously described and this modified form is particularly designed for use as a lock. on garage doors 'or for analogous uses to which it is adapted. v
It is to be understood that the specific key and its manner of operating the spring looking latch 10 form no part of this invention, and that any practical approved analogous construction may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other man ners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto append-ed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is: f 1 Md -1 A lock comprising vspherical heads, a stem formed upon each head, 'a shackle having one end fitted'into the head and stem of one of the heads and secured thereto, the other of said heads and its stem having a central bore therein to receive the other end of the shackle said shackle being provided upon its outer endwith a plurality of annular cutout portions adapted to be inserted into the bore and providing a plurality of an-' -n-ular shoulders, and aspr-ingurged locking 15 latch carried by -the bored head and engag JOSEPH SETTERBERG.
