DANIEL H. MELOCHE, 013 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T EARL HOLLEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
MEANS FOR @RQTECTING- THE SURFACE OF COREi Ho Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLDANncL H. MELooHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 8450 Fourteenth St, Detroit, in the county of 6 lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Protecting the Surface of Cores, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to means for pro- 10 tecting the surface of dry sand cores, and relates specifically to the protection of dry sand cores from the erosiveeifect of molten cast iron, and is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with permanent iron molds in which iron castings are made.
The usual defect with such castings made in iron molds having sand cores is that the cored holes are rough, as particles of sand are carried by the flowing iron and the cast surface is thereby roughened. The object of this invention is therefore to produce a smooth surface in the cored hole.
I have discovered that an insulatingcoating of powdered magnesium oxide a plied with a brush to an ordinary dry san core, using gluten or any other satisfactory binder, is a satisfactory protection for the core. In addition, I may apply lamp black, carbon or other carbonaceous material superimposed above the coating of magnesmm oxide.
The lamp black, carbon or other carbonaceous material doubtless acts to some extent as a lubricant, enabling the iron to flow easily Application filed March 31, 1922. Serial No. 548,475.
' of a substance, having the refractory qualities of magnesium oxide, mixed with a binder to the surface of the dry sand core.
2. Means for protecting the surface of a dry sand core from the action of molten cast iron, which consists in applying to the surface of the sand core a substance having substantially the refractory qualities of magnesium oxide.
3. Means for protecting the surface of a dry sand core from the action of molten cast iron, which consists in applying to the surface of the dry sand core magnesium oxide and superimposing a coating of a carbonaceous material.
4. Means for protecting a dry sand core from the action of molten iron, which consists in applying to the surface of the dry sand core first an insulating substance having substantially the refractory qualities of magnesium oxide and secondly a coating of a carbonaceous material.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
DANIEL H. MELOCHE.
