CYLINDER CONSTRUCTION OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed July 3,
pressure and in the event of fracture there would be a danger of steam and water being discharged into the engine room and the object of my invention is to obviate this danger and at the same time strengthen the general structure.
The invention consists broadly in casting the jacketed cylinder and its valve pockets inl the usual'manne'r and then shrouding the exposed cylinder wall in a casing of steel held in position by bolts and nuts.
In accordance with the invention I provide the shrouding in parts adapted to fit over the outer wall of the casting the parts meeting at joints which telescope one into the other, or otherwise overlap, studs or bolts passing through abutting flanges and serving to hold the structure together.
The cylinder end covers may be inthe form of steel plates or discs or may be continuous with cylindrical extensions which embrace the cylinder ends and interengage with adjacent cylindrical sheaths ors rouds. I By means of the foregoing the cylinder structure as a whole is very much strengthened and all danger of accident through the discharge of hot water or steam is eliminated.
In order thatthe invention may be clearly understood two embodiments of the'same will now be described by aid of the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical section through an internal combustion engine cylinder illustrating one embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view but illustrating another embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings the cylinders are cast with the usual water jackets and water pockcylinders of such engines are subject to 1923. Serial No. 649,313.
ets the walls of which are either constituted by or supported by steel casings held in position by nuts and bolts or their equivalent. I
Referring now particularly to Figure 1 the design of the cylinder shown comprises a cylinder barrel at having a Water jacket 6,
a head or cover 'ccarrying the usual inlet and exhaust valves, one of which is indicated at d which valves are surrounded by water pockets 6. In this example the steel casings comprise a cover plate f which is bolted to the upper part of the cylinder barrel a by bolts so as to serve as a closure for the open en s of the water pockets e. The .water jacket 6 is enclosed at its upper end by a wall h cast integral with the cylinder barrel which wall is supported by a steel shrouding or casing 71. This casing z is provided at its upper end with an inturned flange j which rests upon a circumferential surface formed for its reception on the upper part of the cylinder barrel a. The lower end of this casing is provided with an' outwardly extending circumferential flange which is adapted to oppose a correspondingly shaped flange k formed on the adjacent upper part of a further steel casing Z. This latter casing l constitutes the outer wall of the major andlower portion of the water jacket I; and its upper end is extended as at m beyond the flange is said extension fitting within the lower end of the upper casing 5 its top edge abutting against the bottom edge of the wall 72,. The two casings i and Z are held together by bolts or the like not shown which engage the opposing flanges of such casings.
In the modified arrangement illustrated in Figure 2 the cover plate f and casing 11 which are separate attachments in Figure 1 are in this example constituted by a single casing n. which is flanged at its lower edge as at 0 and bolted to the opposing flange is of the casing Z as in the example first described.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cylinder construction for internal combustion engines in which the outer or exposed walls of the water jackets or pockets are supported or constituted by casings or shrouds of steel.
2. A cylinder constructioi for internal zoo messes combustion engines as in claim 1 in which the water jackets or pockets is efiected by such steel casings or shrouds are held in 'means of a plurality of cast steel members position by bolts and nuts or their equivawhich are secured to the cylinder casting 10 lento and in some cases to each other by bolts and 5 3., A cylinder construction for internal the like fastening means,
combustion enginesas in claim 1 wherein In witness whereof I aflix my signature. the encasing or shrouding of the walls of OLIVER MARGETSON.
