Description

Feb. 5, 1924. 1,482,407
c. A. PENNOCK COSMETIC PENCIL CASE 8 Filed June 14. 1922 Patented Feb. 192%.
CHARLES A. PENNOCK, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD HUD- Y., A CORPORATION OF NUT, OF NEW YORK, N.
NEW YORK.
oosmarxc rmrcn. case.
Application filed June 14, 1922. Serial No. 568,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES A. PENNocK, a citizen of the United States, residing in East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cosmetic- Pencil Cases, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to containers or holders for cosmetic sticks such as lip-sticks and the like, and one object is to provide a common or general container for a plurality of separate containers each of which has-therein a cosmetic stick, and each of which is removable from the common container for using the cosmetic stick.
Another object Is to provide a common or general container for a plurality of separate containers each of which has therein a cosmetic stick, and eachof which is provided with means for slidably moving the smetic stick for projecting it from the separate container for use, this means of each of the separate containers being utilized for cooperating with means of the common container for retaining the separate container in the common container, and permitting removal of the separate container therefrom by slidably moving the separate container out of the common container for use of the cosmetic stick of the separate container.
I attain these and such other objects as may appear during the subjoined description of one of the possible embodiments of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a side view of the common container having two separate containers in outline therein.
Figure 2, is a plan View of the common container.
Figure 3, is an end container.
Figure 4, is a sectional side view of the common container.
Figure 5, is a sectional side view of the retaining guide cap or cover cap of the common container.
Figure 6, is a plan view of said cap.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a separate container having a cosmetic stick slidabl movable therein, and g igure 8, is a sectional side view .on an enlarged scale of the common container having two separate containers therein.
view of the common Similar reference characters denote similar arts throughout the several views.
he common container in form is a case 10 of suitable metal or material, preferably oblong in shape when viewed from'the side or end, and preferably oval when viewed in cross-section, and may have a slightly curved bottom as shown.
The case 10 is provided in its ends at its upper edge with the oppositely disposed slots 11 extending downwardly for a short distance from said upper edge.
The retaining guide cap 12 is of suitable metal and has atop plate 13 which conforms in shape to the opening of the case 10, the plate or portion 13 having a flange or lip 14, the cap 12 being arranged to fit snugly in the opening of the case 10. The top plate 13 is provided with the adjacent openings 15 and 16, arranged for permitting passage of the separate containers, later described, slidably therethrough, the openings 15 and 16 having interiorly extending or depending flanges 17 and 18 conforming to the contour of the openings, the top plate 13 being cut at opposite points, as at 19 and 20, and the cuts 19 and 20 being extended downwardly as oppositely disposed slots through the flange or lip 14 and through the interior flanges 17 and .7
18 and arranged to register with the slots 11 of the case 10 when the retaining guide cap isin operative position in the case 10, these slots not being conveniently shown in the drawings but being readily comprehensible therefrom.
Referring to Fig. 7, each of the separate containers comprises a case, 21, of suitable @metal or material, having a longitudinal slot 22 therethrough in which the tongue 23, hav ing the finger member 24, is slidably movable, the tongue 23 being secured to a follower, not seen, anchored in a well known manner in the cosmetic stick 25, the tongue 23 being made relatively long for the purpose later stated.
23 and-finger member 24 of each of the separate containers are moved to extreme retracted position in the slot 22 of the separate container whereby the cosmetic stick 25 is enclosed by the case 21.
' The retaining guide cap 12 is inserted in the case 10 of the common container, the cuts 19 and 20 and the corresponding slots In assembling and operation, the tonguein the flanges of the cap being arranged to register with the slots 11 of case 10.
The finger member 24 of each separate container is pushed down to the lower end of the slot 22 of the container and the container is then inserted bottom end upwardly through the openings 15 or 16, as the case may be, of the retaining guide cap, the tongue 23 engaging in the cuts and slots of the retaining guide cap and in one of the slots 11 of the case 10 and the finger member 24 is pushed down to the bottom of the slot 11, the separate container being retained in the common Container by frictional contact of the tongue 23 with the sides of the slots and contact of the side of the separate container with the adjacent interior or depending flange 17 or 18, as the case may be, of the retaining guide cap 12. To use the cosmetic stick it is only necessary to move slidably upward by means of the finger member 24 the separate container out of the common container.
It will thus be noted that each of the separate containers constitutes a follower slidably movable in the case 10, 01' common container, by means of the tongue 23 of the separate container engaging in a slot 11 of the case and movable by the finger member 24.
Having thus described my invention, it should be understood that there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departing from the spirit of the inv'ention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A container comprising a case, a cap for said case having openings through the top thereof; and a plurality of similar separate containers each provided with a longitudinal slot and having finger operable means slidably movable in said slot, the finger operable means being movable to the lower end of said slot and each separate container being insertible in said cap and case bottom end upwardly and said finger operable means then-cooperating with means appurtenant to the case; each separate container being movable for enclosure in said case and being removable therefrom by operation of said finger operable means and being retained in the case by engagement of said finger operable means with said means appurtenant to the case and engagement of the separate container with said cap.

4. A container comprising a case having oppositely disposed slots in the upper edge of the case; a cap for said case having slots tongue being movable to the lower end of said slot and each separate container being insertible in said cap and case bottom end upwardly and said finger operable tongue then'engaging the slots of the case and slots of the cap; each separate container being movable for enclosure in said case and being removable therefrom by operation of said finger operable tongue and being retained in the case by frictional engagement of said finger operable tongue with the slots of the case and ment of the separate container with said cap.
