CAST-METAL ANNE/.initier Box.
Application led December 28, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMIL C. RAUsoHEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and 5 State of West Virginia, have invented cer* tain new and useful Improvements in Cast- Metal nnealing Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in cast metal annealing boxes and it pertains to a metal box constructed for enclosing sheet metal plates to be annealed.
@ne object of my present invention is to construct the box with an external longitudinally extending strengthening rib.
A further object of my invention is to extend the external rib in a zig-zag line around the outside of the box whereby the box is strengthened.
A further object of my present invention is to provide a box with an external zigzag rib the depressions of the zig-zag located above the bottom of the box.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description and disclosure.
Fig. 1 is a combined plan and central horizontal sectional view of my improved box.
Fig. 2 is a combined side elevation and central vertical sectional view of my improved box.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the improved box.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken through the straight portion of the body of the box.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken through the center of the corrugation.
My cast box is intended to receive a number of plates to be annealed. The construction herein shown involves many features of a co-pending application Serial No. 609,415 filed Dec. 28th, 1922, of mine with an added improvement of an external longitudinally extending strengthening rib.
The disclosure of my aforesaid co-pend ing application will be briefly referred to. The body of the box is provided with cor* 50 rugations 2 which extend from near its lower edge around the top of the box, the corrugation being deepest at the center of the top of the box 3, for the purpose of giving added strength. As shown these corrue gations are separated by straight parte 4 Serial 1\To. 609,416.
which also add to the strength of the box and prevent it from bending or cracking when subjected to heat action.
My present improvement over that shown in the (3o-pending application relates to an external longitudinal rib 5. This rib extends around the sides and ends of the box and is preferably continuous. At the sides of the box the rib is made zig-zag in shape the upper portions 6 being between the corrugations 2 and the lower portion 7 of the zig-zag being in the center of the corrugations 2. It will be observed that the rib conforms to the shape of the box. That is to say it follows the corrugations as at S and the straight portions as at 9.
lt will be also observed that the rib has a straight part l0 that extends around the corners l1 of the box and a downward bend l2 at the center of the end of the box, the downward bend being in the center of the end corrugation 13. As shown the rib is preferably below the center of the box, and the downward dips of the zig-Zag are preferably adjacent the lower edges of the corrugations 2.
I find in practice that this rib very much strengthens the box and adds to its rigidity and life. By means of the Zig-Zag it more readily accommodates itself to the expansion and contraction of the box, making it a flexible structure while at the saine time affording a strengthening rib. Y
That l desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A cast metal annealing box having an external continuous rib extending around its sides and ends, said rib having a zig-zag shape.
2. A cast metal annealing box having an external continuons rib zig-zag in shape the dips in the Zag being below the center line of the box.
3. An annealing box having vertical corrugations extending across the top, and an external continuons rib extending around the sides and ends of the box, said rib extending into the said vertical corrugations.
4. A cast metal annealing box having vertical corrugations and an external continuous rib having` zig-zag portions at the said corrugations, said rib extending into the corru ations.
5. l cast metal annealing box having a.
plurality of vertical corrugations connected f by straight portions, a zigzag external rib from the ends of the box, a rib Zig-zag along the upward bends of the zig-zag being on the sides of the 'boxn and straight around the straight portions of the box and the the corners of the box and a depressed porl0 down bends of the zig-Zag being in the cortion at the `centers of the ends of the box. 5 rugations. In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my 6. A cast metal box having transverse eorsignature. rugations, the end eorrugations spaced EMIL C. RAUSCHENBERG.
