RAIL JOINT.
Application filed September 15, 1922. Serial No. 588,497.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DAVID B, HUEY, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown in the county of Mahoning and State of hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joints. Among the objects of this invention is the provision of a rail connection that will insure a smooth road with no low joints, and in which the joints will be. held against any accidental lateral displacement.
A still further object is to provide a rail joint having one end of the rail provided with a projection, and a notch on the under side of the projection, an adjoining rail end provided with a recess, having a lug in the base portion of the recess, said recess being vertically longer than the projection on the adjoining rail end. This vertical length being longer to the extent of the thickness of the lug, formed in the bottom of the recess.
It is understood that the present; state of the art, that is, as relates to rail joints, shows a projection on one rail end functioning with a recess in another rail end, and it is not the intention to claim this but the particular manner in which the joint is constructed and for the particular advantages over these inventions and uses that are known to the art. By means of the. improved rail joints, it is possible to have the lower edge of the projection resting upon the lower surface of the recess thereby holding the rail end in a secure manner.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meeting different conditions, various changes in the form and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention, as claimed and set forth in the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an end of a rail with a part broken away in order to show the recess and lug.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an end of a rail provided with a projection and a notch in the under side of said projection.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of themvention, showing a complete assembly of the rail joint.
Figure 4 is perspective view of a yoke member of the device.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the securing lower portion of this projection 3 and is provided with a notch 4.
By referring to Figure 1 it willbe seen that the companion rail end is provided with a recess 5 for the reception of the projection 3 above described. This recess 5 is provided with a lug member 6 formed at a central position on the bottom of the recess 5. It will be seen by referring to Figures 1 and 2 that the vertical length of the projection 33 is approximately the same distance as the distance from the top surface of the lug 6 to the roof 7 of the recess 5.
In assembling this rail joint the projection 3 is inserted into the recess 5 with the lower surface 8 of the projection 3 sliding over the top of the lug 6, until the notch 4 embraces the lug 6 and allows the rail end carrying the projection 8 to drop downwardly until the ends of the adjoining rails are on the same level. Now in order to prevent the rail end provided with the projection 3 from undesired movement upwardly, a securing bolt 9, the body of which is squared, is driven through openings 10 formed in the side walls of the recess 5 at r a point just above the upper surface 11 of the projection 3 when the same is in proper position. By referring to Figure at it will be seen that a yoke member 12 has been provided which is slipped over one of the rails after the ends of the rails have been placed and secured in a joined position, this yoke 12 being provided with a plurality of openings 13 for the reception of pins to be driven through the same and functioning with semicircular notches 14 formed on the lower flanges 15 of the rail 1.

In a rail joint, the combination of abutting rails having thickened webs at each'end,
a straight four cornered member projecting out of one rail end, a notch centrally formed on the under side of said projection, a rail end provided with a recess for the reception ofsaid projection, said recess having a lug centrally located upon the lower surface of said recess, this lug being of a size and shape so as to engage in the notch above mentioned, openings formed in the side walls of said recess, these openings being located a distance from the bottom of said recess equal to the vertical height of the projection above mentioned, a square bodied securing bolt projecting through said wall side openings of said recess and directly over the upper surface of said; projection, a yoke member formed to embrace the lower flanges of said rails, openings in said yoke, semicircular notches in, the lower flanges of said rail and means for securing said bolt, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
