Description

July 10,1923. I 461.308
4 E. CLARK ET AL ANCHOR PLAT E Filed July 26 [1922 Patented July 10, 1923.
. UNITED ANCHOR PLATE.
Application filed July 26, 1922. Serial No. 577,681.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EUGEN CLARK and WILLIAM HARRISON CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at Juliette,-in the county of Monroe, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Anchor Plate, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide novel means for anchoring the meeting ends of a pair of rails, or for holding a rail, on the tie of a railroad track.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the. invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a horizontal section; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a fragmental top plan showing a portion of the rail. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a spike.
The numeral 1 marks a tie on which is disposed a base plate 2 having a heavy overhanging flange 3 which may be denominated a first flange. recesses 4 being formed in the flange 3 at the ends thereof, the recesses defining thinned end portions 5 in the flange 3. The parts 5 of the flange 3 and the base plate 2 have openings 6. v
The numeral 7 marks a rail including a ball 8, a web 9 and a flange 10. The flange 10 of the rail rests on the base plate 2 and extends beneath the flange 3 and the said portions 5. The flange 3 abuts against the web 9 of the rail 7 and engages beneath the ball 8 of the rail. Notches or seats 11 are fashioned in the edge of the flange 10 of the rail 7. Securing elements 12, such as spikes. extend downwardly through the openings 6 in the parts 5 of the flange 3 and in the base plate 2, the spikes entering the tie 1.
The base plate 2 has a second overhanging standing rib 15. An
flange 14 provided with a longitudinal up-' supplied, the same having a depending longitudi'nal rib 17. The flange 10 of the rail 7 extends beneath plate 2. The flange 14 abuts against the web 9 of the rail 7. The auxiliary plate 16 is moved endwise until the rib 17 on the auxiliary plateenters between the rib 15 of the base plate 2 and rib 17 and the upper edge of the plate 16 abut against the web 9 of the rail 7 and the upper edge of the plate 16 is engaged be neath the ball 8 of the rail 7.
Openings 18 are formed in the plate 16. There are openings 19 in the overhanging flange 14 and in the base plate 2. Notches 20 are formed in the edge of the flange 10 of the rail 7. Through the openings 18 and 19 and through the notches 20, spikes 21 are inserted, the spikes entering the tie 1.
The spikes 12 and 21 preferably are somewhat heavier than the old regulation spike and may be made as long as necessary to engage and hold the anchor plate 16.
The various parts of the device including the meeting ends of the rails, are assembled with endwise movement, in a manner which will be obvious from the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the spikes hold the ends 50 of the rails at the joint. On each side of the joint. however, as far back as desired, openings 24 are formed in the flange of the rail 23, the openings being. adapted to receive spikes 25 whereby the rail 23 is held on the tie 22.
If desired, the spike may be in'the form designated'by the numeral 50 in Figure 5, the spike being provided with teeth 51 which aid in holding the spikein place.
What is-claimed is In a device of the class described, a base plate provided with first and second over- .hanging flanges, the second flange being of less height than the first flange, and having an upstanding longitudinal rib; a rail including a flange extended beneath both may;
