Description
Jan. 1, 1924 E. l. NOTTINGHAM meme RING s'rauc'ruap FOR LOCKS Filed D00. 29. 1922 Ill) Patented Jan. 1, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN I. NOTTINGHAM, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMIFORD, CONNECTICUT.
FACING-RING STRUCTURE FOR LOCKS.
Application filed December 29, 1922. Serial No. 609,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN I. NOTTING- inmr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Facing-Ring Structures for Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in facing or rose ring structures for cylinder locks.-one object of the invention being to provide such a structure which shall in clude a substantial armor body portion and a scalp member of thin metal, and in which the scalp member shall be utilized to provide spring means integral therewith for cooperation with the flanged head of a cylinder lock to insure a close fit of said head relatively to the facing ring should it become necessary to turn the cylinder in such manner as to cause the plug of the lock to be located in the lower portion of the cylinder when the lock is applied to a door.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a sectional View of a facing ring structure showing an embodiment of my improvements.
Figure 2 is a front view with the lock cylinder omitted.
Figure 3 is a face view illustrating a. modification, and
Figure l is a sectional view (with a portion of the lock in elevation) of the structure shown in Figure 3.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures l and *2 the body portion of the device is represented at l and may consist of a ring or annulus of steel or hardened mctal, sairjl ring or annulus being formed with an interior annular recess 2.
The body portion 1 of the ring is covered by a scalp 3 of thin spring metal. The rear portion of the scalp may be bent over the peripheral. edge of the body ring 1 and the forward portion of said scalp is made with an annular inwardly projecting portion a which may constitute a lining for a part of the wall of the recess 2 in the ring 1. The inwardly projecting portion 4, ot' the scalp may be slit radially at intervals to provide an annular series oi integral spring fingers 5 which are bent inwardly and forwardly within the recess ot the ring 1 in a manner to be engaged by the flanged head 6 of a lock cylinder 7 and thus aiford for said cylinder a yielding connection with the ring and insure a proper connection between these parts even though necessity may arise to turn the cylinder in properly positioning the lock plug.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 3 and l, the inwardly extending annular portion 4 of the scalp is continue: to the annular shoulder formed by the recess .3 in ring 1, and the inner end of the scalp portion 4 is made to project inwardly over said shoulder to form an annular flange as indicated at 9. The inwardly projecting flange 9 is split in a manner to form a series of concentric spring lingers ll) which are made to project forwardly in a manner to be engaged by the flanged head 6 of the lock cylinder T as shown in Figure 4.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a facing ring, of an annular sheet metal portion cnlbrucing the same and having an inwar-z jecting split annular member rality oi spring fingers.
2. The combinatieu in a facing ring structure of a body ring. a scalp for said body ring and yielding means tor the head of a cylinder iocln said yielding means constitutin; an integral part of the scalp.
The combination in a facing rins: structurtu of a body ring and a scalp therefor. said scalp baring integral spring lingers positioned within the body ring to be engaged by the flanged head of El uvlindvr lock.
l. The combination in a lacing ring structure, of a body ring having an interior an uular recess, a covering scalp and spring means for the flanged head of a cylinder locig'integral with said scalp and located in said annular recess.
5. The combination in a facing ring structure, of a body ring and a covering scalp having an integi al'inWarcUy projecting portion entering the body ring and split furniing a series of spring fingers integral with 5 thescalp.
6. The combinationin am facing ring strut-- ture, uf a. body ring having an interior annular recess. and a scalp having an integral portion entering the ringand having an 10 annular series of spring fingers located within said recess positioned to receive the flanged head 01. a deck cyhnder.
In testimony wlmreu'i', I 1m \0 signed 11H SPQClfiCZltlOH in the presente of two E fl h FiCl'lblIlg witnesses.
