Be it known that I, JOHN. BRICKEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pencils.
One object of the invention is to rovide a pencil consisting of two tubular te escopic members, the inner member being held in place within the outer member b friction whereby it may be moved longitudinally to cause the lead to project from the opening in the end of the outer member.
Another object is to provide a pencil of this type having a clip which is formed integral with one of said membelu.
In the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is an elevation of a pencil.

The pencil comprises the telescoping tubular members 1 and 2. The outer member has a tapering end 3 provided preferably with a pair of slots 4, thereby forming jaws having sufiicient resiliency to assist in holding the lead in place by friction. The inner member is also provided preferably with a tapering end 5, the end of which is blunt whereby it may engage the rear end of the lead and force it out through the opening. The other end of said inner member is closed preferably by an eraser 6 inserted therein. The eraser may be covered normally b a sheet metal cap 7 having screw threade engagement wit the outer end of said member.
Said inner member is provided preferably with one or more longitudinal slots 8,,the diameter of the inner member being such as to permit the same to slide readily within the outer member. To create sufiicient friction to maintain the tubular members in any desired position of longitudinal adjustment, the metal adjacent the slot 8 is preferably forced outwardly slightly causing the inner member to bind somewhat whe'n forced into the outer member. Said slot also serves to permit the introduction of small lengths of lead 9 whereby the inner member may serve as a magazine. A clip 10 is provided and forms an integral part of one of said tubular members referably the outer one. It consists mere y of a pro ect1n tongue which is bent back adjacent to t e outer tube about as shown in Fig. 2.
The lead is positioned by slipping it into the openlng in the tapering end 3 of the outer tube. lit is frictionally held thenin between the jaws previously referred to, butmay be readily advanced by forcibly slid ng the inner tube into the outer tube until the blunt end of the tapering ro'ection 5 engages the rear end of the ea 9. A convenlent method of advancin the inner tube is to grasp the cap 7 an impart a rotary motion to said cap and said inner tube, advancing it about in the same manner as if the two tubes, had screw threaded engagement with each other.
It will be seen that the construction provided is exceedingly simple, light and inexpensive. The tapering ends are integral with the cylindrical portion of the tubes in each case and the clip being integral with the outer tube, the screw threaded cap is the only additional part required and this is obviously not essential, but may be omitted if desired. lBy completely withdrawing the inner tube from the outer tube the magazine may be filled with extra lengths of lead or said lengths may be removed from time to time as required in use.
What ll claim is 1. A pencil comprising a pair of telescopic members the inner member having an expanded portion adapted to frictionally engage the wall of the outer member, the outer member having an o ening at one end to receive a lead, and e end of said inner member abutting against and serving to advance said lead through said opening, said inner member having an opening providing access thereto to form a magazine.
2. A pencil comprisi telescopic tubular members, each of whic is provided with a tapering end, the end of said outer memher having an openin and a slot therein, a lead frictlonally hel within said slotted opening and being abutted by the tapering end of said inner member, said inner member having an expanded portion adapted to frictionally engage said outer member, and a cap on the outer end of said inner memher by which said inner member may be grasped.
3. A pencil comprising a pair of telescopic members, one of said members having an expanded portion to provide frictional contact with said other member, the outer member having an apertured tapered end adapted to receive a lead, and a lead adapted to be projected through said aperture upon the sliding of the inner member within said outer member, said inner member having an opening therein providing access thereto to form a magazine.
4. A pencil comprising telesco ing members, the outer member having a c i formed integral therewith, the inner mem er having an opening providing access thereto to form a magazine, said inner member being expanded to frictionally engage said outer member, an eraser secured in the outer end of said inner member, and a screw threaded cap enclosing said eraser.
