COMBINED PEN AND PENCIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed July 3, 1919. SerialdNo. 38,503.
To all 'zr/wm 'it may Concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. HUGriizs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Bensonhurst, bor` ough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a' neu7 and Improved Combined Pen and Pencil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in Writing implecolmbined fountain pen and magazine pen* c1 The primary object of the present invention is to provide mea-ns by Which the writing operation may be carried on either with a lead 'pencil or with ink.
A further object of the invention is to lprovidea single device in Which both a lead pencil and a pen are combined.
Vith the above andother objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in Which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of the device in theform in which it is used as a pencil;v Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of the device showing the several parts in their respective positions when used as a pen.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates a barrel or inlr chamber, said barrel or ink chamber 5 being provided on one of its ends With an external thread 6 and an internal thread 7. The opposite end of the barrel is provided with an external thread 8 and an. internal thread 9, the internal thread 9 being carried by the tapered end of the lead receptacle 10, which extends longitudinally of the barrel 5 on its interior as shown. The external thread 8 is formed on the exterior of the barrel 5, and-is adapted to forni the means by which a tapered head 1l is secured to the barrel 5. This, tapered head 11 is provided with an inwardly-projectingl portion 12, the opposite sides of which are bifui-cated, as at 13, to form a suitable gripu ping member for the lead, which is designated by the reference character 14;.
Secured Within the opposite end of the barrel and retained therein by the thread 7, is a head. memberl. The head member 15 carries the Writing point 16 in any desired manner, said point receiving its supply of ink by means of the feeder 17. The reference character 18 designates a cap', which is adapted to cover the Writing point when the latter is not in use, and when it is desired to l use the Writing point, said cap is reversed and is retained on the opposite end of the I barrel 5 by reason of engagement of its threads 19 with the threads 20 adj acent the opposite end of the barrel.
l The operation of the lead pencil is as folows:
The lead 14 is inserted in the head 11, and' the projected portion thereof is extended into the receptacle 10. With the parts in this position, the tapered extension 12 is screwed into the tapered recess 21, and owing to the bifurcations 13, the fingers 22 are caused to grip the lead to prevent movement thereof longitudinally of the receptacle 10 and the head 11, and when it is not desired to use the pencil, if the head 11 is rotated sufficiently to loosen the gripping fingers 22, the lead will be freely moved within the receptacle 10 provided therefor, Where it may remain until it is desired to again use the same.
From the foregoing it Will be apparent that the present inventionI provides a combined pen and pencil, and said pen and pen cil is capable ofY use as either without any especial modifications of construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A. device of the character described comprising a barrel having a reduced screwthreaded end, a lead-carrying chamber Within the barrel and integral therewith, said lead-carrying chamber being rigidly connected with the reduced screw-threaded end of the barrel by a tapered internally screw-threaded tubular section, a. lead-grip ping member adapted to be inserted into the 'open end of said lead-carrying chamber, and a resilient lead-gripping member adapted for engagement with the internal tapered screw thread of the section connect ing the threaded end of the barrel With the lead chamber for causing said resilient lead i To . 2; comprising a barrel having a screw threaded end, an integral lead chamber formed.
with said barrel` and provided at one end with an enlarged tapered internally threaded opening, and lead-gripping means comprising resilient members adapted vfor vengagement with theinternally screw-threaded tapered portion of thelead chamber for lead gripping means having a ange coperatirig 'with the' threaded end of said barrel, to retain the lead holderin operative posi- JOHN J.
