PHONOGRPH CONSTRUCTON AND HOUSING.
i Specication o f Letters Patent. Pamted Aug, @919220 Application led June 9, 1920. Serial No. 887,709.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. LiviNGs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Phonograph Constructions and Housings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to l improvements in that class of inventlons known as musical instruments andI more particularly relates to an improved phonograph. j
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the housing for the machine and its horn is of a novel construction, being in the shape of a table which when the machine is not in use mayI be used in the capacity of an ordinary library table, while when it is desired to use the phonograph a drawer containing the main operating parts of the phonograph may be extended so that a record may be played when on the revolving disk while the drawer is in either an opened or closed position.
As an equally important object this invention embraces the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein an improved adjustable sound passage is provided between the drawer and the horn to insure of the proper operation of the phonograph as well as a means for modifying the tone thereof.
More particularly this invention consists of a device of the above character wherein the horn is rigidly mounted in a compartment in the table and communicates with the sound passage, also formed beneath the top of the table, improved means being provided for maintaining constant communication between the sound box which is carried by the drawer and the sound passage to conduct sound variations regardless of the position of the drawer.
More specific objects of the invention may be said to consist of the provision of improved means for mounting the drawer; the construction of a partition forming a part of, the sound passage or conduit, and the construction of the sound passage.
Other objects as well as theY nature, 4characteristic features and scope of this invenon the line lr-4 of Fig.
tion will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in, connection with the accompanyin drawings and pointed out in the claims, orming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearlyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 1s a side elevational view of one form of the invention.
Flg. 2 is a similar view of a slightly modiedform of the device.
Fig. 3 .is an end elevation ofthe form shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken 2. i Fig. 5 is an end e evation of the form shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail showy Fig. 8. f
ig. 11 is a side elevational detail looking toward the inner face of a part of the front wall of the body of the table, showing a part of the meansfor mounting the drawer.
Fig. 12 is top plan detail, partly in seotion, of the horn, drawer and passage of the v arrangement shown in Fig. 8, and
Fi 13 is an enlarged fragmentary longitu inal sectional detail view on the line 13 13 of Fig. 8.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, especially Figs. 1, 3 and 8 to 13, thereis provided a housing preferably in the form of a table A comprising a top (a) and supporting legs for the main body portion. One end of the body portion contains a drawer B for records, etc., while the compartment adjacent thereto accommodates the horn C of the `phonograph, the horn compartment being covered appear.
at its open end b a het-worked screen (d) which is remova Iy positioned medially oi the 'ont. side of the body portion for ornamental purposes. Immediately to the right of the horn compartment and opening at the adjacent end of the body is a compartment for the drawer D which contains the main worlng parts of the phonograph. llihe drawer is provided with a removable lid or cover on which is mounted the revolving disk 2f and the tone arm 3, which carries the sound reproducer 4. The drawer also divided into a large compartment 5 which receives the operating mechanism for 'the and a small compartment- 6l positioned at the inner right hand corner of the drawer and directly beneath and comwith the tone arm 3, this compartment provided in its outer side a sound opening 7 for a purpose to Mounted longitudinally within the body portion of the table and spaced in parallel relation to the rear wall thereof and in juxtaposed relationV to the right side of the drawer D is the improved plate partition 8. At the inner end of partition 8, there is a vertical partition 9 which when taken ,with upper and lower artitions l0, the rear wall of the table and tle partition 8 forms a sound passage 1l extending horizontally along the inner face of the rear side of the table and thence on an incline to al point opposite the inner end of: the horn C to which communication established by means of an opening Continuous communication between the opening 7 and the passage 11 is effected by means of a horizontal s1ot-13 provided in the partition 8. Mounted transversely through the right side of the drawer and adjacent the partition forming the compartment 6 is a plate 15 which operates through the slot (13) and extends across the passage or conduit (11) being adapted to move horizontally' through the slot simultaneously with corresponding movements of the drawer (D),y effecting a closure for the outer part of the. passage (11) for the purpose of lengthening ory shortening the said passage according to the position of the drawer (D).
With ay view toward providing improved vmeans for slidably mounting the drawer (D) ,y a drawer slide (14) is mounted on the side of the plate partition (8) to support the right side of the drawer while the outer surface of the oppsite side of the drawer is supported on drawer slides (16 and 17), the
latter being movably laterally on volts (18) about which are arranged coiled springs (192), the ends bearing against the slides (16 and 17') of the adjacent body wall so the slides will act to yeldingly hold the drawer against the partition (8) in addition to permitting a relative sliding movebetween the drawer and the partition.
'slotted plate 25 through which projects 'jacent the drawer Mounted above the drawer D in the end wall of the body portion by means of hinges '20 is a doorl F and in effecting a removable engagement of the door there is mounted for vertical movement in the upper edge thereof a spring pressed round headed bolt 21 which engages the slotted keeper plate 22` carried by the under surface of the table top (a).
In order to eil'ect an opening of the door simultaneously with the opening of the drawer thereis mounted on the upper edge of the drawer, a lug 23 (shown in Fig. 13) adapted for contact with the inner face of the door near the lower edge thereof.
Through the front of drawer D there` is mounted the usual operating handle of the phonograph, while on the upper edge of the drawer near the front there is arrangedha t e disk control lever 26.
ln Figs. 2 and 4 to 7, inclusive, there is shown a slightly modified arrangement. In this' form of the invention Athe construction of 'the horn and passage is varied to the extent that the passage 11 in reality constitutes an angular branch of the inner end of tbe horn C', being 1provided on its side adreceives the plate 15 carried by the drawer. The remaining parts are substantially the same as shown in the other form with the reference characters primed.
In using the instrument it is apparent that it is only necessary to open the drawer D which simultaneously opens the door F and during the outward sliding movement of the drawer the plate 15 will slide through the slot 13v and the passage 11 forming a closure for the outer end of the passage and at the point immediately adjacent the opening 7. When a record is placed on disk 2 and the machine started in the usual manner ,with a slot 13 which the sound travels through the tone arm into Y the compartment 6 thence through the opening 7 and slot 13 to the passage 11 and finally out through the horn C. By this arrangement it will of course be apparent that the tone will be modified according to the position of the drawer D, by reason of the provision of the continuous communication betweenopenng 7 and the sound passage 11.. It is believed in view ot the foregoing that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention will be unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the inven- Leaeeee 5 ing communication between the horn and the compartment which communicates with the tone arm, substantially as described.
2. A- device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the compartment in the drawer which com- 10 municates with the tone arm is provided with an opening and wherein thel passage is provided with a horizontal slot registerable with the opening regardless of the position of the drawer, and a plate carried by the drawer adjacent the opening and operating through the slot and the passage and forming a closure for the outer end of the passage.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a stationary horn and a sliding drawer containing the operating parts of a phonograph mechanism,'of an ad justable sound passage between the drawer and the horn through which sound waves are conducted.
In testimony whereof l have afxed my signature.
