COT/IBIATION LUCK AND KEY.
Application filed August Si), 1922. Serial No. 585,165.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, FMnRsoN E. ROUSH, citizen of United States, residing at Goodland, in the county of Sherman and State of Kansas, yhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks and Keys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and has special'reference to a combination door lock.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of bolts and combination wheels for such locks. i
A third import-ant object of the invention is to provide an improved bolt locking means for such a lock.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved removable key for indicating the proper setting of the combination to permit unlocking of the lock.
1With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and r- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the exterior of the lock.
Figure 2 is a front view of the lock.
Figure 8 is a vertical section on the line 8 3 of Figure 2.
Figure et is a similar section but taken from the opposite side.
Figure 5 is a side elevation from the side opposite Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective showing the front portion of the lock casing.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective of one of the combination pointers and its spindle, or shaft.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the key used herewith.
Figure 9 is a detail view of one of the ends of said key.
Figure 10 isa detail perspective view of the locking member, and
Figure 11 is a detail perspective view of the bolt body.
vided with a front plate 12. At the front of this casing within the same is formed a pair of guide lugs 13 between which moves the front end of a i'shaped locking member 141 which, when the device is assembled, constitutes part of the bolt. This locking member is provided on the side next to the plate 10 with a notch 18 wherein moves the body 16 of the bolt proper. This body 16 has at its outer end a bevelled nose 17 which may move into and out of they recess 18 formed in the forward end of the member 111. Extending rearwardly or inwardly from the body 16 the bolt is provided with aA shank 19 which terminates in an arcuate yoke portion 2O so formed as to provide inwardly curved ends 21. This arcuate yoke portion moves between guides 22 and through the casing extends the hub 23 of a bolt actuating member, this hub being provided with a square opening 24 for the reception of the shank of door knobs 25. Extending from the hub is a pair. of arms 26 shaped to engage the recurved portions 21 selective-ly so as to force the bolt back against the action of a spring 27 which urges it forward. Adjacent the forward end of the casing there is provided suitable openings for the reception of shafts 28 and kgyed on these shafts within the casing iS a pair of combination discs 29 each of which has a release notch 8O and which are provided with serrations 81 around their periph cries. Extending from the ends of the locking member 141 are locking lugs 82 the ends of which are forked ag at 33 so that they may engage serrations 31,the lugs being of proper size to slidably fit in the slots 8O when the Vlatter' are properly positioned for this purpose. Suitable escutcheons 33 are provided and through these escutcheons pass the shafts 28, the pointers 34 being mounted on the ends of these shafts and being provided with stop lugs 35. One of the escutcheons is slotted as at 86 and a tubular thumb piece 37 passes through this escutcheon and is connected to the member 14; so that the latter may be pulled back independently of the remainder of the bolt. This tubular thumb piece 87 is adapted to normally register with an opening 87 formed in the body 16 of the bolt and this tubular thumb piece 37 and opening 37 are adapted to vremovably Vreceive any preferred type of pin, nail or the like 38 for coupling the member 14 and bolt body 16 together, when itis desired to lock the door. It will be particularly noted that no dial is provided for the pointers but in place of the dial there is a key which consists of a pair of tubular members 38 connected by a cross bar 39. These tubular members are so spaced that when one is itted on one of the shafts 28 the other may be lit-ted on the other of said shafts.' Each of these mem bers is also provided with a holding cap .40 for holding-the stop lugs 42 in position on the'members and as shown, a screw 41 eX- tends through each cap, stoplug and member. lith this key device, when it is desired to unlocky the door, the key is fitted on the two shafts and the pointers are then rotated until the stop lugs engage the stop lugs or lingers 42. When this takes place, the slots 30 will be in proper position to receive the lugs 32 and the whole bolt may then be retracted.
l'Vhen the lock is to be used as an ordinary spring latch, .the member 14 and the bolt body 16 are disconnected by removing the connecting pin 38" from the tubular thumb piece 37 and the opening 37', which will of course permit the Sliding back of the bolt body 16 independent of the lock member 14.
4Owing'to the conne'otionof the bolt member.
16 with the shank of a door knob, the bolt body 1G'is permitted to be operated by the said door knob.
There has thus been provided asimple and eiiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is` obvious that minor changesmay be made inthe form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It'isjn'ot, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the eXact form herein'sliown and described, but it is desiredtol include all such as properly come within the scope claimed. Y
Having thus described the invention rwhat isclai'ined as new, is: i
1. In a combination lock, a casing, a pair of slotted disks in said casing, shafts carrying saidr disks and projecting through said casing, a retractile bolt, a locking member having lugs movable into and outy of the slots in said disks upon the latter being rotated to proper positions, means to retract said bolt, means for detachably connecting` the lock member with the bolt, pointers on said shafts, a key member movable into and outV of position on said shafts, a stop lug on said key member lying in the path of the pointers to limit rotation of the shafts and thereby to position the disks in unlocking position.
2. In a combination lock, a` casing, a pair of shafts extending' in parallel relation through the casing and having their ends projecting` therefrom, `pointers on said ends, disks iir-:ed on said shafts within the casing and provided each with a radial slot, a retractile bolt in said casing provided with lugs movable into and out of the slots when th'elatter are in release position, means to retract the bolt, a key member consisting of a pair of tubular members and a connecting bar, said tubular members being engageable on the ends of saidshafts, holding vcaps on the tubular members and having downwardly projecting fingers lying in the paths of the respective pointers, and means to hold the caps and fingers in position on the tubular members.
3. ln a combination lock, a casing, a pair of shafts extending in paralisi relation through the casing and having 'their ends projecting therefrom, pointers on said ends, disks lined on said shafts within the casing and provided each with a radial slot, a retr ctile bolt in said casing provided with lugs morable into and out of the slots when the latter are in release position, means to retract the bolt, a key member consisting of a pair of tubular members and a connecting bar, said tubular members being engageable on the ends ofsaxid shafts, caps piVota-lly adjustable on the tubular members and having downwardly projecting lingers lying` in theV paths Aof the' respective pointers, means to hold the caps and fingers in position on the tubular members, forks on the lugs, and serrations on the disks engageable by said forks..
ln testimony whereof I afX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
