To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY J AY, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Mobridge, in the county of WValworth and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification. I
My present invention relates generally to combination locks and more particularly to a combination lock for doors and other places, more especially those employing a bolt throwing member actuated by the door knob, and my primary object is the provision of a simple, inexpensive device of this type capable of manual control and. in which the necessity of carrying the key is avoided, thus rendering the device particularl desirablein hotels and the like.
Wlth the above statement generally in mind, my invention resides more particularly in the features of construction, arrangement and operation tOflbe now described with respectito the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein:

Referring now to these figures, my invention isembodied within a casing 15 which as seenin Fig; 1 in particular, is attachable to a door or other part to be, looked, as indicated at 16, and securely fastened in connection therewith by any suitable means as,
for instance, bolts 17 the outer face of the said casing 15 having a dial 18" around the outer edge of a circular slot 19, the purpose of which will be presently described. At the lower central portion of the, casing 15, and secured upon the outer face or ,wall thereof, is a vertically disposed doorknob supporting member 20; which'bridges the lower portion of the slot-:19 and the upper end of -which is apertured to irotatably receive the inner-reduced portionlof aihol'low knob 21, the aperture of the-knob supportingmember 201 being in line, with front and rear aper- Specification of Letters Patent.

- The connecting bar, which as above stated is shiftable length-wise through the openings 22 and 23 of the casing and into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member 25, is pivotally connected at 27 at its forward end, to the inner end of the knob carr ed key 28', the outer end of the latter projecting externally through a slotted opening 29 formed in the outer face of the door knob, and the configuration of which prevents complete withdrawal of the key 28 With the connecting bar 24, the latter being preventedrfrom passing through the slot 29. In this; way, the key for moving the bolt is, in its various positions oflengthwise ad ustment, constrained to rotation with the knob 2lfby virtue of its extension through theslotted opening 29 and it is obvious that when the key is shifted inwardly, as seen in Fig. 2, turning movement of the knob 21 is communicated through the key and through the connecting bar 24. to the bolt throwing member 25.
Means are providedin connection with the casing, "however, for normally preventing inward shifting movement of the connecting bar 24through the casing 15 ,,and1these means comprise a pair oftumbler disks 30 and 31mounted in spaced relation and independently rotatable upon a shaftor bOltg32 which is xmounted through the casing 15 parallel with and above'theconnecting bar 24. Mounted also upon the shaft orbolt 32 are a pair of tumbler actuating members,
one of which is seen in detail in Fig. 3, each of these members including adisk 33, rotatable by virtue'of the central opening, 34,

end of amanual controlling arm 35 is 'connected at36. This controlling arm 35 is intermediately bent at an angle as indicated at 37, so as to extend forwardly throughthe slot19 of the casing 15, its offset extremity 38 having a pointer 39. movable on the dial 18 of the casing and provided with, a small stud lO'forming a handle. Eachof the disks 33 is rotatably connected to its respect ve ,tumbler disk 30, the interposition ofia g,
.are separated from the other pair of disks and from the side walls of the casing by smooth-faced washers 42, so that when one of the tumbler disks is rotated, communication of rotation to the other tumbler disk is thereby avoided.
In order that the disks 33 may be firmly connected to their respective tumbler disks 30 and 31, the bolt or shaft 32 is threaded at one end, adjacent to the knob 21, for the reception of a wing nut 43 and the like, by
rotation of which in one direction, the severa-l disks of the series on the shaft or bolt are clamped to one another.
Each of the tumbler disks, one of which is shown in detail in Fig. 5, has an annular series of small openings 4:4 and a single lar er opening 45 the latter of which is of sufiicient' diameter to receive the connecting bar 24. In this way, when the handle of each of the controlling arms 35 is grasped in turn and the arm shifted to the required number on the dial, the enlarged openings 45 of the two tumbler disks will be alined with the openings 22 and 23 and the inner and outer walls of the casing may then be raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 and shifted inwardly, pushing the" connecting bar through the several alinedopenings and into engagement with the bolt throwing member 25.
By virtue of the possibility of movement between the controlling arms 35 and the tumbler disks 30 and 31, it is obvious that when the connectingbar 24: is in the position shown in Fig. 2, that, is, in its engaged relation and extending through the several alined openings 22, 4:5 and 23', the wing nut 43 of the bolt or shaft 32 may be loosened, permitting relative movement of the controlling arms with their disks 33, in respect to the tumbler disks, and enabling the operator to set the controlling arm to the desired point on the scale which will thereafter become the combination numbers; when the wing nut 43 has again been tightened to clamp the disks 33 into engagement with their respective tumbler disks through the friction disks 41.
It will also be seen by reference to Fig. 4
that the inner end of the connecting bar 24 has reduced extensions 46 so that cooperation is thus had with the annular series of small openings 4A and the tumbler disks in order to prevent unwarranted tampering with thelock, and obviate the possibility of shifting the inner end of the connecting bar against either of the disks, and then simply rotating the latter until, with pressure therewith and movement with against the connecting bar, it slips through the opening as the latter comes into register.
It is obvious, furthermore, that my invention thus provides a simple, inexpensive construction, whereby the necessity of carrying adoor key is eliminated, rendering the invention particularly desirable in connection witlrhotel use, especially in view of the fact that the combination may be changed readily and. quickly.
It is also to be observed and borne in mind that the combination parts as herein described and illustrated may be adapted to other forms of locks and latches beyond those noted above.
1. In a lock of the character described, the combination of a bolt throwing member, a knobor handle normally rotatable freely with respect to said member, a connecting bar shiftable lengthwise into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member, a. key connected to one end of the connecting bar and extending through a slotted opening in the knob or handle, a casing in connection with which the knob or handle is mounted to rotate, having openings therethrough in which the connecting bar is movable, andwprovided with a dial, a shaft extending through the casing, tumbler disks rotatable on the shaft and extending into the path of movement of the connecting bar, each ofsaid disks being provided with an opening arranged for alinement with the connecting bar receiving openings of the casing, and a controlling arm having connection with tumbler disks and provided with a portion extending exteriorly of the casing and overlying the dial thereof.

3. In a lock of the characterd'escribed, the combination of a bolt throwing member, a knob or handle normally rotatable freely with respect'to said member, a connecting member shiftable through the knob or handle and having a non-rotatable connection respect thereto, into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member, rotating tumblers in the path of movement of said connecting member and having openings through which the said member is movable, and manual connections for rotating saidtumblers.
4. In a lock of the character described, the combination of a bolt throwing member, a knob or handle normally rotatable freely with respect to said member, a connecting member shiftable through the knob or handle and having a non-rotatable connection therewith and movement with respect thereto, into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member, rotating tumblers in the path of movement of said connecting member and having openings through which the said member is movable, and manual connections for rotating said tumblers, said last named connections including manual controlling arms, and controlling disks adj acent to the tumblers and from which the said arms extend, having detachable engagement with the tumblers, as described.

In a lock of the character described, the combination of a bolt throwing member, a knob or handle normally rotatable freely with respect to said member, a connecting member shiftable through the knob or handle and having a non-rotatable connection therewith and movement with respect thereto, into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member, rotating tumblers in the path of movement of said connecting member and having openings through which the said member is movable, manual operating connections movable with respect to said tumblers, and means for normally clamping said manually operating rlzfinnections in engagement with the tumers.
6. In a lock of the character described, the combination of a bolt throwing member, a knob or handle normally rotatable freely with respect to said member, a connecting member having a sliding non-rotatable connection with the knob or handle and movable with respect thereto into and out of engagement with the bolt throwing member, a casing through which the said connecting member is movable, a shaft in the casing parallel to the connecting member, tumbler disks rotatably disposed upon the said shaft and havingopenings movable into alinement with one another and the said connecting member, manual controlling means for moving the tumbler disks, including disks also rotatable on the shaft, and controlling arms extending eXteriorly-of the casing from the last mentioned disks, friction disks disposed between the said controlling arm disks and the tumbler disks, said shaft having one threaded end, and a wing nut threaded on the shaft to clamp the disks of each pair in connection with one another.
