ANTIFRICTION BEILLtIVlIGr.'v
Application filed December 27, 1921., serial 110.525,11).
To all whom it may cof/acera:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DATH, a
citizen of the United States, residing. at
- forming a part of this specification. l.
This invention relates to Improvementsfm` anti-'friction bearings.
In the manufacture, shipping andappli-v cation of anti-frictionlbearings, particularly anti-friction bearings employed as side bearings on railway cars, itishighly-essential l. y
kwhich extend through correspondingly lothat the'entire device be shipped completely assembled without possibility of any ofthe parts becoming lost or disarranged `either A accidentally or lfrom' deliberate tampering.
Many 'expediente have heretofore-been suggested for 'permanently retaining the parts .of side bearings fin'assembled relation, but -many of the same'ha've not proved-'entirely .satisfactory duey to 4either the expense of applying suchretaining means or the diliicultyf in always applying'the same properly, due to the variations which necessarilyoccur "-in themanufacture .of-th'e1parts, most 'of 30which are in the form of-castings.
The objectofmy invention is to lprovide a simple, effective and relatively inexpensive means for retaining the parts of an anti-friction bearing in'assembled relation and more particularlyll'as applied to a side' bearingfor railway cars. r i
In the drawingforming apart of -this specification, Figure 1 isavertical sectional view taken parallel to the length of a car 40 through the endsz'of'the body and truck bolsters and showing my improvements in connection therewith. Y Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view correspond-ing substantially 1 to the broken section line 2 2 of Figure 1. And Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the retaining studs prior to its application to the other parts of the sidebearing.
In said drawing, 10 indicates the under side of ka body bolster of a car and 11 the 5 upper side of an opposed truck bolster. In the instance shown, the improved side bean ing is applied to the truck bolster and the same comprises, broadly, a housing, base casting or retaining memberV designated generally by the reference A; a wear or bear-v ing plate B; rolling-I antifriction element .proper C; and special means ifo-r retaining the parts assembled hereinafter specificallyl f p 'y The retaining member orbase castingA, as shown, 1s formed with a bottom wall 12,
'vertically extending spaced side walls" 13A-13, vertically extending 'end walls'llle-ll, re- 'enforcing and limitingv ribsV15-15 onthe interior "of the casting at the ends thereof,
and cornerlugsor ears 16-16 by which the casting is adapted-to be riveted or otherwise rigidly secured' to the *truck bolster.
Cn its interior, the base' casting A, in the bottom thereof, is preferablyprovided with a pair of upstandingknobs or teeth 17a-17,
the latter project upwardly and are adapted to engage` in corresponding openings 19-19 provided in the bottom of theanti-friction" element C to `thereby preventthe'latter from being shifted bodily Vwith respect to,` the base casting A. Y
The anti-friction element properC, in the form shown, is of the rollingl rocker gravity self-centering type and is preferably formed with top and bottom concentric bearing sur-1 faces 2O and'21, thel latter being of longer radius than the former. tom bearing surfaces 2O and 21- are merged with arcuate side surfaces A22--22. With the arrangement shown, it ,is evident that, when the element is shifted to eithervside of its normal central position shown in Figure 1, the center of mass is-elevated and consequently the element will"j'automatically yreturn .to centralposition upon removal of the actuatingfo-rce. Tol retain the element C permanently within the base casting A, which, in turn, will retain the wearing plate B in position, I employ the following means. The rocker element C, when cast, is formed with recesses 23-23 on each end thereof in axial alinement. Each of said recesses 23, at its inner end, is ared toward the center ofthey rocker, as indicated atr23a and projecting within the flared recess at its inner end is a cone-y shaped lug 24 integral with the body of the rocker element C. Y a
The side Walls 13 of the base casting are Saidtop and bot- 'of each of thetubnlar studs D is `provided nation with aretaining member having aY `rality Iof tangs A217-27.
with a pluralityrelt longitudinally extending cuts 26-26 which may be `conveniently formed by sawing7 thereby leaving a plu- The tubular studs Dyin the condition shown in Figure and above described, are then passed through the respective openings of therbase casting A and driveninto the openings 23 of the rocker element C, landfon account of the elasticity of the metal comprising the studs l). ,and the peculiarforn'iation within'the rocker element 0,' the ytangs 27 will be flared or expanded se as to tit snugly within the inwardly iiaring portions' 23a-o the openings of the rocker element C. l In this manner, the following studs D areY permanently (for allpractical purposes)fattached to the rocker element C and by leaving a portion ot the studs D extending Within or through the openings 25 ci" the basev casting, the rocher element C cannctthereai'terfbe detached from thebase casting, although al'- lowed full freedom inV rollingback and forth. The -arrangement shown is inexpensive both with respect tothe cost of thematerial and parts and also with respect to the'labor in assembling the parts. i I claim; f Y
l. In an lanti-ilriction bearing, the combilongitudinally extending bearing' surface and' spaced side walls; of a cast metal antivfriction element adapted'to roll4 back and forth on said bearing surface and between said side walls; and means for retaining said element inv assembled relation :withsaidretaining member comprising stud members at each 'end of the antiffriction element Yand projecting therefrom within corresponding, elongated slots in the side walls to allow said stud members to Work back and orththerein, said stud members being formed of metal each of said stud members having its inner end extending and expandedwithin a corresponding o'peningin the .anti-friction element to thereby prevent its Withdrawal K therefrom.
2. ln'an anti-'friction bearing, the combination with a retaining member having a longitudinally extending bearing surface'and spaced side walls; of an anti-friction element adapted to roll back and forthon said bearing surface and between said side wallssaid anti-friction element being formed 'ot metal and provided with inwardly flaring openings at opposite*sidesA and integral raisedy portions at, the inner ends ofsaid openings;v and means vfor retaining saidV element -in'asse'mbledV relation with'said retain- `ing member comprising tubular studmembers at each end of thefanti-fri'ction element, each off said stud'members having its inner Vend extended- Within a 'corresponding openingY of the anti-friction .element and ex-` panded within the flaring portion thereof to Vrigidly'attach the samevtosaid element5 the otherends of said stud members projecting beyond the ends'of theanti-friction element,
the'side walls or"v thef base casting having openings therein withinwhich said extended ends are adapted'fto move back andfl'orth.
3. As an article of manufacture, .an antii'riction elementv for side bearings, comprising acast'metal body provided with alined inwardly flaring openings at opposite sides having raised Aportions-at the yinner ends thereonvsaid raised portions beingcast integral with said body,`and oppositely'project-S "ing hollow trunnions'viixedly "secured`v tofsaid body by khavingtheir'inner ends split and expanded in said -iaring openings.
4L. As an artic-leef manufacture,- al cast i metal anti-friction elementfor side' bearings provided with inwardly iaringtrunnion receivingfopenings at 'oppositefsides thereof, and' conical raised portions i at .the vinner ends of said openings, said raised Vport-ions being cast integral with saidelement.
In Witness that I claim the foregoingl have hereunto subscribed my name'this 9th day of-Dec.,l921.
