Be it known that I, EDWIN IV. IVEBB, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Bearings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,

My invention relates to side bearings for cars of the type employing rockers interposed between the truck and body holsters,
and has for its object to provide a highly efficient and simple spring-centering device therefor. i
To the above end, the invention consists of rthe novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined inl the claims. i' In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

The improved side bearing is carried by the bolster body 8 and, as shown, includes a cast rectangular housing 10 made'up of upper Vand lower sections. detachably connected by nutequipped bolts 11. Formed with the upper section of the housing 10 are y perforated flanges 12, through which may be inserted rivets or othery fastening means, not shown, to rigidly secure the side bearing to the body bolster 8. This movement of the Vleft-hand rocker 2O causes thelower horizontal edges of its inner flat surfaces 24 to swing to the right on the arc of a circle and forces the engaged follower 25 to the right V and thereby com-presses the spring 32.

2. In a side bearing, the combination withupper and lower bearing plates, of a pair of rockers interposed between the bearing plates, a link connecting the rockers, and a spring encircling the link and re-actiing vagainst. the opposing faces of the rockers above and below-the axis of the spring with a force tending to center the rockers.
3. In a side bearing, the combination with upper andlowerfbearing plates, of av pair ,of rockers interposed between the bearing plates, a link connecting ythe rockers and supported in respect to the upper bearing plate with freedom for endwise mo`vement, and a spring encirclingthe link and re-act ingagainstV the opposing faces ofthe rockers above and below the axis of the spring witha force tending to center the rockers.

In a side bearing, the combination with upper and lower bearing plates, of side plates secured in respect to the upper .bearing plate, a pair of rockers interposed be- Y tween the bearing plates and having apertures alined in respect to the direction of movementof the rockers, each of said rockers having a pin extending transversely through its apertures, a link having hooks at its ends in which the rocker pins rest,'a pair of followers mounted on the side plates between the rockers and supporting the link with freedom for endwise movement, stops limiting the movement of the followers, anda spring re-acting against the followers, said followers normally engaging the rockers above and below the axis of the link to center the same. f
