met 'et i k s, it @am A licaton filed .ul 9 Seial in; s334591 To @ZZ iti/tom t may concern.: narts as will be hereinafter more fully de- .Be it known that l, Leiris losannnne, ec i" .'lustratcd in the accompanying citizen ot the United States, and a resit and subsequently incorporated in dent of the city of `New York, State oi" tl e suojoined claims.
o New York, have invented certain new and lil the drawing wherein l have disclosed useful linprovements in Covered Buttons, several desirable and practical,embodiments of which the following is a specification. or" the invention and in which similar refrl`his invention relates to buttons and ei'ence characters designate corresponding similar articles and incre particularly, to parts tln'oughout the several views: lo a covered button such as is commonly used igllre l is a diametrieal sectional view upon garments when it is desired to eliminate the contrast between the material of the button and the material of the garnient.
Such covered 4buttons as are common in the art have heretofore been sewn or attached to the garment by hand, a time consuming and laborious operation. ln such constructions the material is gathered through a covered button showing one construction ot my invention;
Figure 2 is a Yiront elevation7 a part of the covering material being broken-away;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation;
Figure is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view;
Figures 5, 6,7, and 8 are views respectively in a tutt at the center of the rear side of corresponding to Figures l to L and illus 75 the button so as to provide holding means trating a slightly inodiiied iorin ot' the intor the thread. As is well known, this ntion;
means ot attachment for the button is more d' iigure 9 is an enlarged Yfragmentary eleor less insecure so that the button frequently ration illustrating the manner in which the becomes detached and lost. threads are held out of contact with the it is the primary purpose and'object ot edges of the needle guide openings; and the present invention to provide a covered Figure-pl lO, ll, l2 and 18 are views corbutton which can be readily attached to responding to Figures l to 4l and showing the material of the garment by machine. s ill another embodiment otthe'invention. .ln the accompanying drawing l have dis- Referring in detail to the drawings and .,o @105951 Sovera] embodiments of the invenmore particularly to Figures l to l thereof, 5 y
tion each of .which is characterized by the designates the 'liront section et the button provision of a two part metallic body, each body and @the rear section thereof. .Each ot olf the partshaving a marginal flange and these body sections is constructed troni a being so constructed that the edge ot the single sheet inet-al plate, the section G being covering material is securely gripped or in the i'orin of an annulus having an openclainped between thelanges, the said maing T of relatively large diameter. Each terial extending over the front side ot the ot these metallic sections ot the button body button bodyand one ot the parts ot the is provided upon its edge with an annulaimetallic body having a plurality ot spaced `mf 1ginal flange Sand 9 respectively, said needle guide openings which are entirely tlages extending at right angles to the concealed from view by the covering plane ot the metal plate from which the terial. body section is formed.
.ln one ot' the suggested constructions of The iront section 5 of the button body is the invention .l propose to use a disc z cardboard or other similar material intr-s'- guide openings l0 equi-distantly spaced posed between the two parte of the button troni each other and concentricall'yv located body and likewise having spaced openings with respect to the axial center line et the aligned with the needle guide openings but button. These needle guide openings are of smaller diameter .than the latter so as to so spaced and grouped that ythey are all hold the thread str-ands away from the edges disposed within the area oi"- the opening 7. et the openings in the metal part and thus The fabric covering material shown at obviate the possible cutting oic the saine. ll is adapted to be tightly drawn over the l-lith the above and other objects in view, 1 surface ot the button section and the invention consists in the improved-button construction and in the torni, properinrther provided with a plurality of needle ioo section 6 of the button is then inserted within the flange 8 as clearly shown in Figure l so that the edge of the material is tightly compressed or clamped between said flanges. The relative diameteil of the flanges 8 and 9 is such that considerable pressure must be applied to the button section 6 in order to assemble the saine with the section 5 whereby its flange 9 is placed under tension. rllhere is thus a constant clamping and holding pressure of the flanges 8 and 9 upon the edge of the material so that it cannot become loosened or detached from the body of the button.
In the sewing of a button constructed in the manner described, upon the garmens,
4the button is positioned in the sewing inachine in the same manner as the ordinary button of bone or composition material having needle O'uide openings. The needle first penetrates through the material l1 and passes through one of the guide openings 10, then through the opening 7 and through the material of the garment. After several thread loops have been drawn through one of the openings, the needle then carries the thread across the face of the covering material ll and is reciprocated through another of the openings l0 in the usual manner. Thus the button may be very tightly sewn to the garment and as the guide openings l0 for the needle are entirely covered by the material 11, they will not be visible, and only the securing thread will be seen upon the surface of the material. By the provision of a covered button of this construction which can be rapidly secured upon the garment by maw chine, considerable economy may be realized in the manufacturing cost of such garn'ients.
In Figures 5 to 9 inclusive, I have shown another slightly Vmodified construction in which the parts of the button body are ot identically theV same construction as those above referred to, but in addition, I provide a disc 12 of cardboard or other suitable material which is interposed between the spaced plates from which these button sections are formed. The inner edge of the annular metallic section 6 of the button engages tightly against the rear side of this disc so that it is closely confined between the sections the button. The disc l2 is provided with spaced openings 13 which are grouped in the same manner as the openings l0 in the front section 5 of the button and' are in registering relation with the latter openings. It is to be noted. however, that the openings 13 in the disc l2 are of a less diameter than the openings l0, such vconstruction being clearly disclosed in Figures 6, 8 and 9.
In the latter figure, it will be noted that the attaching threads T are compactly held within the openings i3 of the disc and away from the edges of the openings l() in the metal button section 5. Thus it is apparent that in the lateral pull or strain upon die button, the threads will not come in contact with the edges of the openings lf3 which would probably result in the cutting or severance of the threads.
In Figures l0 to 13 of the drawings, i have disclosed another construction where in the front section 5 of the button bod).Y is in the form of a metal annulus while the rear section 6 is of disc form. 'Illia metal body sections, however, are provided with the marginal flanges as above referred to for securely clamping and holding the edge of the covering material which eX- tends over the annulus 5. In this case the rear metal section 6 of the button is provided with the spaced needle guide opcnings l0. As no support is provided for the central portion of the covering material7 the attaching threads will draw the matcrial in slightly towards the rear section 6 of the button, and for this reason, Jthis form of the invention may not be so desirable. It will be manifest, however, that it desired, the disc l2 may also be used in connection with this construction and confined within the marginal flange of the button section 6.
Frein the foregoing description coin sidcred in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and several advantages of the various illustrated embodiments of the invention will be readily understood. The covered button of my invention can be constructed in various sizes and of different ornamental shapes as might be required and by attaching the same to the garment by machine inthe same manner as the ordinary uncovered button, maximum security and at the same time, neatness in appearance with economy in production is obtained.
While I have above referred to several practica-l embodiments of the device, it will nevertheless be understood that the invention might also be embodied in various other alternative forms, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes in the form, proportion and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
l. A button of the character described comprising a body section, a second body section co-acting therewith covering material adapted to be extended over the side of the first-mentioned body section opposite from the second body section, said sections having means for clamping the covering material in position on the first-mentioned section, and said first-mentioned section being provided with spaced needle guide openings concealed by the covering material.
2. A butt-on of the character described comprising two body sections having annular marginal flanges, a sheet of Covering niaterial extending over the side of one of said body sections, the edge of said material eX- tending between said flanges and being clampingly held thereby, and said body section over Which the covering extends having a plurality of spaced needle guide openings therein concealed by said material.
3. A button of the character described comprising two sheet metal body sections each having an annular clamping flange, a sheet of covering material extending over one side of one of said body sections and having its edge clampingly held by said flanges, the other of the body sections being `provided With an aperture and said first named section having a plurality of spaced needle guide openings therein, concealed by the covering material and grouped Within the area of said aperture.
et. A button of the character described comprising a body section provided With spaced needle guide openings, covering matei-iai adapted to be extended over one side of said body section so as to conceal said openings, and means co-acting with said body section on the side opposite from the covering material to secure the covering` material in place on said body section,
5. A button of the character described comprising a body section having a transversely extending flange and provided with spaced needle guide openings arranged concentrically in the central portion of the section, covering material adapted to be extended over one side of said section and over the outer and inner sides of said flange, and a second section co-acting With said flange to clamp the covering material in place on the first-mentioned section, said second section being formed With a central aperture of greater diameter than the circle defined by the needle guide openings so as to permit a needle to pass entirely through the button at any of said openings.
6. A button of the character described comprised o' tvvo sections and a sheet of covering material, one of said sections constituting a backing yfor the covering material and being formed with needle guide openings concealed by the covering material and the other section being operable to clamp the covering material on th-e first.- mentioned section.
7. A button of the character described comprisinga bottom section, a top section formed with needle. guide openings, and a sheet of covering material extending over the top section and concealing said openings.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereunder.
