RAZOR STROP.
Application filed May k20,
To all whom z't may concern.'
Beit known that I, JOHN S'rADNIoznK, acitizen of Poland, residingvat Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of lNew Jersey, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Razor Strops, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful limprovements 'in razor strops, and has for the primary object thereof ythe pro duction ofl a razor strop yprovided with a novel form ofy tensioning means, whereby the usual fabricstrip and rubber strip are held under a tension desired by the operator for sharpening straight edge razors, safety razors, or other cutting implements.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a razor strop wherein one end of the same may be loosely secured to a hook or-the like on a barbers chair or upon the wall of a room, andk wherein the usual amount of exertion necessary for applying tension to a razor stropwill be dispensed with. n
IVith the above general objects in. view and others that will appear as lthe nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combina tion andarrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.v
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designateA corresponding parts throughout the several views, Y y f Figurev 1 is a side elevational View of my Figure 2 isa front elevational Aview` of one sidethereof with one fof the strips removed and por-tions of the inventionrbeing .shownt in. cross section, v y l Figure 3zis a fragmentary enlarged cross sectional view upon the lines III-III of, Fig. 2, a Y f i Figure 4 is a similar view, but takenupon theibrokenfline' IV--IV of Fig. l', andv Figure 5 is'across sectional view taken upon the lines V-V of Fig'. 3 and'looking inthe direction of the arrows, f
Referring more lin (detail to the drawing there is shown a razor strop provided with the usual fabric strip 1 and leatherstrip 2, which strips are rigidly secured at their opposite ends to a frame work hereinafter more fullyy described. Centrally disposed between the strips 1 and 2 is a longitudinally 19,22. Serial No. 562,377.
arranged bracing member 3, which bracing member is in the form'of an-oblong strip and may consist of wood yor other suitable material. Secured upon the upper end of themember 3 bybolt andnut fasteners 4 is a metallic covering 5, the opposite ends of which have longitudinally projectingl ears (Sand suitably secured between these earsk I have shown a circular kwoodenblock 7. This block 7 need not be of the exact formas shown,but may be square or have.
any `other configuration and for purposes of illustration I have shown this block 1nemf ber 7 secured tothe ears 6 by a crossbolt 8. Loosely positioned'upon thisk crossbolt 8 and upon `the adjacent outer surfaces of the ears 6 is an inverted U-shaped member 9 having a suitable form of hook`1`0 projecting'from the upper'edge thereof. .'The U- shaped memberr9 with its complementary hook 10 are adapted to freely swing upon the bolt 3 for allowing vthe, hook member 10 to be engaged upon any desired form of supporting bolt`for hangingthe razor strop thereto. The adjacent upper ends of the strips 1 and 2 are adapted-toioifferlie each other and are ysecured to the `'upper i surface of the block 7Jby tacks-,or the like 1-1. Upon the bottom edge of the oblong bracing strip 3V is a U-shaped metallic. strap kr Vmember 12 which is soformed asy to snugly engage the front and rear faces ofthe said n, f
member and this UQs'haped strap 12 is rigidly'secured to the mentioned end of the member 3 by'boltand nutl connections 13. This strapmember 12 fis of a width'equal to the ,widthjof the member 3 and 'has has la*cylindrical borel. passing thereupon its lower face and lintermediate itstwo ends' an enlargement 121,.,1which enlargement through "in `alinementwith a relatively, long A cylindrical bore 16 within the adjacent end k,through the threaded bore 15 of theenlargefrk ment latin the strapj12 and to be loosely received within'the rela-tively'longbore 16.y of thestrip 3is a screw'l threaded cylindrical rod 17. This rod 17'` is adjustablyheld with,- in the bore leby alock nut 1 8 "positioned beneath the enlargement 14 of the strap 12. Beneath thelower end of the oblong strip 3 and the U-shaped metallic strap 12 there is positioned a rectangular metallic plate 19, which plate is mounted for relative movement toward and Aaway from said lower ofthe ,oblong strip `Adapted for passing end of the member 3 and the U-shaped strap 12. The opposite sides of the plate member 19 are perforated for the reception of vertically disposed headed bolt members 20, which bolt members are screw-threaded at 22 for permitting locking nuts 23 to be received thereon for permanently mounting the said bolts within the plates 19. The upper ends of these bolts pass through perforations within opposite ends of the bottom face of the U-strap 12 and designated by the numeral 24. (lo-extensive with these perfo-` f rations 24 are inwardly projecting bores`25 within opposite sides of the oblong strip 3, and it will be noted that the perforations 24 in the member 12 and the bores 25 within for rigidly securing this strip 26 to the said undersurface of the rectangular plate 19 by bolts and nuts 29 and 30 respectively. This strip 26 is provided with a central enlarged `opening 3l'and positionedr within and depending from this openingis an annularv shaped thimble 32. The upper end of this thimble 32vis closed by an annular wall 33 which annular wall is of a circumference relatively greater than the circumference of the thimble'32 for effecting a iianged upper end wall. The outeredges of this annular upper wall overlie the inner adjacent edges of the perforation or opening 31 within the strip 26 and'this upper wall 33 loosely con- 'tacts with the adjacent faces of the rectangular plate 19 and crossstrip 26 for allowing a free rotary1 movement of the sleeve 32. n The said upper wall of the thimble has a central screw threaded opening therein, designated by the numeral .'34 and coeXtensivelwith this opening and centrally of the rectangular plate 19V there is a slightly enn larged opening 35 withint-his plate. lower end of the before mentioned screw vthreaded rod 17 has free passage through the central opening 35 in the plate 19 and the threads of this rod interengage withiny the threaded opening of the top wall 33 of the thimble 32, andthe rod is further received within an elongated bore 37 within a handlemember 38.v This handle `member is of an annular form, and hasa reduced upper end portion 39 whereby the same may The be rigidly secured within the depending thimble 32.
The lower ends of the fabric and leather strips land 2, are bifurcated as shown in Fig. 2, whereby spaced fingers are formed thereon and designated by the numeral 40, which bifurcation permits the edges of the strip to pass beyond each side of the handle 38. The ends of these strips overlie each other and are rigidly secured to the bottom of the rectangular plate 19 by headed bolts 41 passing through perforations 42 at the four corners of the said plate. The inner ends of these headed bolts are provided with the usual retaining nuts 43.k y
Freni vthe above description it will be clearly seen that tension or stretch may be applied to the flexible strips 1 and 2, by grasping the strop at. any desirable point with one hand and by imparting to the handle member 38 a relative turning movement. `Any rotation of the handle 38 will effect a rotation of the upper wall 33 of the thimble 32, which upper wall is provided with a screw threaded opening engaging the screw threads of the rod 17. The rod being stationarily mounted within the bore 16 of the-strip 13 bythe lock nut 18, any1' turning movement of the aforesaid handle will move the rectangular plate 19 toward or away from the lower end of the said oblong strip. Which movement of the said plate will either increase or decrease the tension of the flexible strips 1 and 2.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as claimed.
What is claimed as new is In a device of the class described,
rectangular plate having an opening therein, strap members secured to said plate at one of their ends, an elongated strip having the other ends -of said strap members secured thereto, a rotatable thimble in engagement with said rectangular -f plate, a handle in permanent engagement withvsaid thimble, said elongatedfstrip and `the handle being provided with coexten.
sive bores,and a threaded rod receivable in said bores' and having a free passage through said opening lin the rectangular plate, said .rod being in Vthreaded engagement withsaid elongated strip and said thimble and being adapted to cause a movement of the rectangular plate toward or. away from said i elongated strip upon a rotary movement of said handle and thimble;
In testimony whereof I aliiX my si nature.
