` R. SCHMIDT CHAIR Filed Jan. 4, 1923 Patented niet. is, i923.
CHAIR.A
Application filed January 4, 1823. r`Serial No. 6110,632.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the County of vSuffolk and State. of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inV a Chair, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a chair and the subject matter thereof has been divided from my pending application bearing Serial YNumber 526,169, filed on the V31st of December, 1921. y
The principal object of the invention is` to provide a shelf or tray mounted on' a chair so that it maybe disposedv in extension of the back when not in use.
l/Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the Vinvention relates to certain novel features of construction andthe combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary thereof, and
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of one arm of thetray or shelf.
Referring to the drawing in detail itY will be seen that the legs of thechair 1 are preferably four in number and the two rear legs extend upwardly so as to form the supports 2 for the back rest 3. rlhe front le0`s extend upwardly so as to form the supports 4 for v the arm rests 5 which are attached at their rear ends intermediately to the supports 2. These parts of the chair are conventional and may be of anypreferred construction.v In order to form a table for the high chair I have provided a shelf-22 which when in side elevation use is situated and supported on the forward ends of the arm rests 5 as is indicated in in presence of two Figure 2 and when notin use is situated Vin extension of the baci; rest as is illustrated in y' Figure y1. This shelf4 22'isixed to a pair of supporting arms 23 which are longitudiy nally slotted adjacent their ends asindicated at 2li, said slots having an loffset portion at 25.k A projection 27 is formed on the end of each rod 23 for engagement with stops 25% carried on the supports 2 adjacent the seat of the chair thus holding the shelf 22 in a Yposition adjacent the upper portionr of the back rest 3 so as to form a part'thereof.
lWhen it is desired, however, to use the Ashelf asa table it is lifted so as to free the projection 27 from the stops 2S at which time it may be moved so as to rest on the forward ends of the arm rests 5, the offset portions 25 of each slot 24 engaging the pins 29 carried intermediately the ends of the supports 2.`
It will also be noted thatthisrshelf maybe lifted clear Yof the back restB and is mounted 1 Yso as to bedisposed adjacent the rear legs 1.
Having thus described my invention what In chair including arm rests, -a shelf; a pair of arms .extending from the ends of extending slots, extensionsformedon the Asaid shelf andprovided with.loe.fritudinally` f when'the pins are inengagement with 'the g offsets. j,
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature witnesses. ROBERT SCHMIDT. IVitnesses RUTH Womit, RUTH E. NICHOLSON.
