Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Substitute for application Serial No. 699,708, filed May 25, 1912. This application filed September 17, 1918, Serial No. 255,055.
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA YATES BUR- NETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murfreesboro, in the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Book Racks and Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined book carriers and racks, and pertains more particularly to a device of this kind adapted for school uses.
The object of the invention is to provide a book carrier and rack in which in one position of same a number of books may be carried, and in another position a book may be supported on a desk or table to enable reading thereof.
A further object of the invention is to'provide a simple and economical device for the purpose described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in position to form a rack on which a book, shown in dotted lines, is held;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the invention when in another position for use as a carrier for a number of books; and
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the three frames of which the device is composed, in detached relation.
The invention consists primarily in the provision of three members or frames, at base frame 1, and two side frames 2 and 3. The base frame is formed of wire bent into rectangular form, the ends of the front side of the frame beingv bent downwardly and returned upwardly upon itself to form legs 4, the wire being further bent upwardly and returned downwardly upon itself to form stops 5.. The wire forming the rear side of the frame is bent intermediate its ends to form a pair of spaced arches 6, and its ends are looped at 7 and then bent downwardly and returned upwardly upon itself to form legs 8. The ends of legs 4 and 8 project into rubber tips 9 to which they are rigidly connected. The ends of the frame have central loops 10, while the front side of the frame has a central arch 11 and an arch 12 on each side of arch 11. Cross rods 13 connect the alining arches 6 and 12 of the front and rear sides of the base frame and they in turn are provided with central arches 14 connected by a rod 15 formed with a central 7 arch 16 that is connected by a rod 17 to the arch 11 of the front side of the frame. The cross rods 13 are each formed with a pair of loops 18 located on opposite sides of the central arch 14 thereof.
The front side of the base frame has a U- shaped handle 19 secured thereto.
The side frame 2 is formed of a section of wire bent into U-form, the side 20 of which is looped at its ends at 21 and extended at right angles to form the legs 22 which have eyes 23 at their free ends, which eyes 23 receive the loops 7 of the base frame 1. The side 20 of frame 2 has a central arch 24 which is connected to a rod 25 that has an eye 26, the latter receivingan arch 27 that is formed on the rear side of base frame 1. The legs 22 of the side frame 2 are formed with central loops 28 that are connected by a cross rod 29. A loop 30 is formed on each side of each loop 28 and each loop 30 has a hook wire member 31 movably connected thereto. The side frame 3 is of U-form, the side 32 thereof having a central arch 34 and an arch 33 on each side of arch 34. The legs 35 of frame 3 have their free ends formed with eyes 36, that receive the loops 21 of side frame 2. A pair of parallel rods 37 are connected at one end to arches 33 of the side 32 of frame 3 and at their opposite ends have eyes 38 that receive the arches 39 of the side 20 of frame 2. Rods 37 are formed with central arches 40 connected by a cross rod 41 that has a central arch 42 which alines with arch 34 of the side 32 of frame 3 and is connected to said arch 34 by a rod 43.. A U- shaped handle 44' similar to handle 19 is connected to the side 32 of frame 3.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the parts occupy a position to support a book, shown in dotted lines, in which use, the side 32 of frame 3 is brought to engage either pair of the alined loops 18 of the cross rods 13, the handle 44 being swung downwardly to rest on the rod 17 of frame 1. As depicted in dotted lines in Fig. 1, of the drawings, the hooks 31 may be moved to engage the leaves of the open hook to hold same stationary.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the device may be used to carry books, in which use, the side frame 2, becomes the base, and the base 1 and side frame 3 constitute the sides of the carrier, and are held against movement by causing the hooks of frame 2 to engage the loops 10 and 45 of the respective frames 1 and 3. Books and other articles commonly carried by pupils and students may be conveniently housed in the space defined by the three frames, as is manifest from Fig. :2 of the drawings.
In order to hold the pages of an Open book stationary, an elastic cord 46, may be employed in lieu of the hooks 31. The cord as is attached at one end to one leg 35 of frame 3 and has a hook 47 at its free end which is for engagement with the opposite leg of frame 3, the cord being stretched across the open face of the book.
If desired, the book can be placed so that its open face at the bottom thereof will en'- gage stops 5, in which event frame 3 is engaged with loops 18 as depicted in Fig. 1, of the drawings, the loops acting to restrict the rearward movement of the frame 3. When the book engages with the stops 18 that are located adjacent the handle .19, then the central loops 18 act to restrict the rearward movement of the frame 3.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the type described, a base frame and a side frame connected'to one side of the base frame, and a second side frame connected to the other side of the first named side frame, said second named side frame in one position acting as a book'rest and in another position acting as a side of a book carrier the other side of which carrier is formed by the base frame, the first named side frame forming the third side of the carmen 2. A combined book rest and carrier consisting of three frames connected so as to form a substantially U-shaped carrier in one position, and in another position to provide a base on which the book is supported and a rest for the back of the book, and hooks carried by the frames, which hooks when the device is used as a carrier maintain the frames against movement, and when the device is used as a book rest engage the book to hold same stationary in open position.

5. A combined book rest and carrier consistin r of a base frame, a side frame connected to the base frame, a' second side frame connected to the firstmentioned side frame, the second mentioned side frame in one position acting as a book rest, means on the base frame to engage a book to restrict forward movement thereof, and other means on the base frameto engage the free side of the second mentioned side'frame to restrict rearward movement thereof when supporting a'book,:the second mentioned side frame when moved to aposition where same .is-opposite the base frame formin one sideof a book carrier, the other side of which carrier is formed by thebase frame. I
