T o all whom t may] concern.' 1
., 'Be it known that I, RICHARD E. Pini` KiNs, 'a citizen ofthe UnitedV States,1residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts', have invented cer.-
ltain new and useiul Improvements in Smok- 'ing` Pipes, of which the following is a speci'-Y ication, reference being tothe accomA thatthe lower or bottom portion of the bowl f is protected eectually against burningy out. Y, vAnother yobject :of the' invention #sk to provide a novel and improved device of this generall character whereinthe bowlcomprises two sectionsifone of saidsections constituting? 'a removablev cap, together' with a sleeve arranged .internally of the sections for maintaining -said sections in l'assembled relation.r .y l l f- W An'addit'i'onalobject of the"invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this .general Ycharacter wherein the bottom of the bowl is provided with an absorbent body over which the smoke is drawn and Y tially dry andfreed of impurities.
. whereby such smoke is freed of. moisture and the like so that the smoke as it enters within the mouth of the user is substan The'inventioii consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved smoking pipe whereby certain im-V portant advantages are attained and the devicerendered simpler, less expensive and .otherwise more convenient and .advantageous for use, as will behereinafte'r more fully set forth. rllhe novel features of my invention will hereinafter'be definitelyclaimed. In order thatrmy invention may be the better understood, IV will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: y
Figure -1 is a view partly'in section and partlyV in elevation illustrating a pipe constructed in. accordance of my'invention; and i f Figure 2 is a. view in top plan ot the lower .sectiony or cap, the` coa'cting`A vstem being shown in fragment. f l is disclosed in the accompanying draw.- ings, B denotesthe bowl or body otmy 'improved pipe and has its lower end closed Y by a removable lowersection or caprC. AWhen assembled,V the adjacent ends ot.' the `body B .an embodiment I and the cap or `lower section .C are in close contactonewithvthe lother as illustrated in FigureV l, and are main-tained in such rela-V tion through the instrumentality .of Van internal -coupling; sleeve l. .1.
The lowerportion of thejwalloic the bowl is reduced inlthickness -roiii within7 as at 2, wherebyfan,annular orv continuous internal stepped shoulder 3)A isprovided at adesired pointinwardly of tlielower end the bowl. orf, body B. v The inner wall or the reduced lower portionoi' thewall of' the bowlrBt is threaded and is engaged bythe peripheral threaded Ys,iir liace,of We, sleeve` l, the outer endotsaid sleeve abuttingv the inner por;
tion 'ot'thestepped shoulder Y'Th'esleeve l also extends within andV has threaded en- I gagement with the wall of a chamber lrpro'- l' vided inthe upperor .outer face ofthe capf or lower section C. l y -s Y Snugly ii'tting within thel'upper' .partgoj the 4sleeve 1 and abutting the-ijipper'portion i of the steppedI shoulder 3 and held fries ytionally in such Vposition is an insert or collar 5 or clay or other` inin'iisible material and which insert or collar`5 is oit a depth less than the major length; of the portion 2 of the body or bowl B so-that,A whenthe v Yinsert or collar 5 isttedwithin the sleeve l, there 'will be a slight'spacebetween the bottom of the insert or collar 5 andV thebase of the'chamber 4t. rPhe-bore of the insertY or 'i collar 5 isfof such configuration to be lsubstantially in continuationof Vthe bore of the upper portion of the bowlorbody B.
The lower ina-rOinal portion of the insert er collar 5 isproyided in its peripherywith an annular recessfor rabbet 6 whereby is provided iin-annular Vshoulder 7 surroundingV the lower portion Voi the insert or collar 5.
By having' the insert or collar 5 of clay or other pintusible material, the'life of the'pipe 1 is materially prolonged because the insert or collar 5 serve/sto prevent'burning out of;
the bowl'or body B.
l. Apipe of the class The lower member` or cap C has its base continued by an arcuate or other extensionv 8 which constitutes a stem and with which is associated a mouth-piece V9. The stem 8 is provided with a draft hole 10 in communication with the chamber a through the bottom thereof and at a. marginal portion thereof. The lower portion of the sleeve l overlying' the induction end of the draft hole 10y is provided with a notch or recess 11 to facilitate the passage of Vthel smoke into the Y draft hole l0.
The base of the chamber i at the axial center thereof is'provided with a pocket or well l2 and which has arranged therein a filler 14 of absorbent material, so that as the smoke is drawn from the body or bowl B and through the insert or collar 5, the same will pass over such filler before it enters the draft hole l() and thereby become freed of moisture or kindred impurities.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason.
of the convenience and facilitywith which it may be assembled and opera-ted, and it will also be obvious that my invention is sufcentible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to` the precise arrangement and formation of the several partsV herein shown in carryinzgr out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: Y i
described comprising' a bowl, a removable cap closing,V the bottom of the bowl, a collar of infusible material snugly itting within the lower portion of the bowl and spaced from the applied cap,
the lower marginal portion of the collar being provided with a peripheral rabbet, and a stem for the bowl carried by the cap and having a draft opening in communication with the rabbetV of the applied collar.
2. A pipe of the class described comprising` a bowl consisting of two separable sections, an internal coupling sleeve coacting 'with said sections for holding the samel in assembled relation, a collar of infusiblematerial snugly fitting within the' sleeve and spaced from the bottom of the bowl, and a stem carried by one of the sections of the bowl Vand having vapdraft opening in communication with the bowl belowthe applied collar.
3. A Vpipe of the class described comprisinfr a bowl including two sectionsyinternal means for detachably holding said sections in assembled relation, a kcollar of infusible l material snugly tting within the lower portion of the upper section ofthe bowl and spaced from the applied lower section, a stem for the bowl having a draft opening in communication withL the bowl below the collar, and an absorbent body carried by the lower section of the bowl below the collar.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
