SMOKING PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 23, 1919.

ammwtoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD E. PERKINS, F JOPLIN, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO A. H. LANYON, 0F PITTSBURG, KANSAS, TRUSTEE FOR THE DEALERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
s MOKlNG PlPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J'u1y23, 1919. Serial No. 312,761.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIC ARD E. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jorillin, in the county of Jasper and State of issouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, refer ones being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to certain improvements in smoking pipes and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the lower or bottom portion of the bowl is surrounded by a chamber in communication with the stem and wherein said lower or bottom portion of the bowl includes a removable collar or insert of clay or other infusible material so that the lower or bottom portion of the bowl is protected efl'ectually against burning out.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved smoking pipe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m invention may be the better understood, will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating a pipe constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1 with the cap removed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes the bowl or body of my improved pipe and has its lower end portion closed by a removable cap C preferably in threaded engagement with the bowl D proper. The lower portion of the wall of the bowl B is reduced in thickness from within as at 1 whereby an annular or continuous internal shoulder 2 is provided at a desired point inwardly of the lower end of the bowl or body B.
Snugly fitting within the upper part of the portion 1 of the bowl or body B and held frictionally therein is an insert or collar I of clay or other infusible material and which insert or collar I is of a depth less than the length of the portion 1 of thebody or bowl B so that when the insert or collar I is fitted within the portion 1 and in contact with the shoulder 2 there will be a slight space between the bottom of the insert or collar I and the applied cap O. The bore of the insert or collar C is of such configuration to be substantially in continuation of the bore of the upper portion of the bowl or body B.
The lower marginal portion of the insert or collar I is provided in its periphery with an annular recess or rabbet 3 whereby is provided a chamber 4 surrounding the lower portion of the insert or collar I. By having the insert or collar I of clay or other infusible material the life of the pipe is materially prolonged because the insert or collar I serves to prevent burning out of the bowl or body B.
The periphery of the insert or collar I is provided with a substantially semicircular slot or recess 5 in communication with the recess or rabbet 3 and which registers with the inner end of the draft hole 6 disposed through the stem 7 of the bowl or body B.
The position and shape of the slot or recess 5 will be according to the angle of the coacting end portion of the draft hole 6.
The collar or insert I may be readily removed or applied within the body B and the rabbet or recess 3 can be readily cleansed by running therearound an end portion of a match or other suitable object or implement.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my'invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A pipe of the class described comprising a bowl, a removable cap closing the bottom of the bowl, the side wall of the bowl having its lower portion reduced in thickness from within, and a collar of infusible material snugly fitting within the lower portion of the bowl and spaced from the applied cap, the lower marginal portion of the collar being provided with a peripheral rabbet, and
a stem for the bowl having a draft opening in communication with the rabbet of -th'e applied collar.
2. A pipe of the class described comprising a bowl, a removable cap closing the bottom ofthe bowl, the side wall of the bowl having its lower portion reduced in thickness from within, and a collar of infusible material snugly fitting within the lower portion of the bowl and spaced from the, ap-
plied cap, the lower marginal portion of the collar being provided with a peripheral rabcollar being also provided with a recess in communication with the rabbet and adapted 1 to register with the upper portion of the adj acent end of the draft hole of the stem.
In'testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 111 the presence of two wltnesses.
