These carriages are adapted to be-moved in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 3 by the index arms upon a sliding movement thereof. The supplementary carriages are provided with supporting and guiding: rol ers whiehcooperate with thera-ils 58 (see Figs. 5 and 9). Each supplementary index carriage has attached thereto a metal bracket piece 63 which connects with unit arm carriages 64 and 64 (see Figs. 4, 5 and 9). The unit armcarriages are grouped closely together in order to avoid excessive length of the unit ann.. The unit arm carriages are provided with rollers 65 which rest upon supporting rails 66.
There. are groups of unit arm carriages 64 at the. left, as shown in Fig. 4, and other groups 64 at the right. The left and right hand groups are mounted upon adjacent rails 66 as shown in Fig. 9. Moving index arm to the right moves supplementary index carriage 61 to the right locking the supplementary carriage to the index carriage by means of gravity awl 67 engaging a locking pin on the in ex carriage (see Fig. 5). When the parts are in normal position the pawl is disengaged by abutting against pin 68. Fig. 4 showsin dotted lines the carriage 64 moved to the right. A movement of the index arm in reverse direction moves the right-hand carriage 64. The carriages are returned to normal position by returning springs 69. It will be understood that thei index arm 55 is moved until the pointer 59 stands opposite the desired name 0n the index section. Each unit arm carriage has a shaft 70 there- 'in*wh-ich' forms a support for a number of unitarms or account carrying members 71. The movementof the carriage is adapted to bring-a particular unit arm, corresponding to a particular customers account, to the dotted line position-as shown in- Fig; 4. It will be assumed that this unit arm already carries a total check representing an amount of 104.12. This amount is visible to the opersection after the unit arm has swung up into position. In this latter position a pawl 178 pivoted on the carriage engages a notch 179 in total check carriage. Upon the return of supplementary carriage the total check carriage is carried along with it as shown in Fig. 16. Bell crank 177 eventually contacts with pawl 176. (see Fig. 21) releasing member 174 and allowing apertured plate 170. to grip the new total check. Concurrently the total check grippers 156 are opened by pin 159 contacting with a pin 180 in slot in rail 154:, thereby shifting the controlling wedge plate 158 so as to open the grippers. The unit arm is now in the position as shown in Fig. 17. y
In order to print the customers name and address upon the sales slip, I provide suit able type characters 181 upon the rearof the unit arm. These type characters may represent any desired account designating data. 7
The final upward movement of the Slip carriage prior to printing the total amount has broughta high tooth 182 on slip carriagc rack into contact with a bent plate 183 and rocked this bentplate so as to set certain parts for the address printing operation.
Referring to Figs. 23 and 24, the slip carriagerack 105 has a high tooth 182 which when the slip carriagemoves to total position contacts with and moves a pivoted bent plate 183. This plate is pivoted upon a bell crank 185' andhas a pin 186 in engage ment therewith and is held in contact therewith by a spring. Upon high tooth 182 contacting with .hent plate 183, bell crank 185 is swung clockwise and by means of a roller .184: swings plate 130 clockwise and brin'gsQa roller 187 out of slot 188 and into cooperation with abutment 189. The movement ofaddressing roller arm 191 through a pin 196 and sloping slot in plate 197 is adapted to operate cutting off knife 117 and cut off a previously printed record check. The cut oil' check thereafte drops in box 118 where it is retained.
Upon the completion of the address print ing plate 130 returns to normal position under the influence of a return spring 198.
After the address printing operation is completed escapement pawl 136 is released from first high tooth to second high tooth shown in Fig. 25. This permits the slip carriage'to move to xtreme upper position and feed forward the record check paper through the knii es 116 and 117 and thereby space the record checks apart so that the customers name and address is not severed by the knives on subsequent cutting of paper. Just prior to the aforesaid final down a link206 and-rocks shaft 91.
movement of the slip carriage, the supplementary carriage 17 6 has been moved to the left to the position shown in Fig. 16. The end wall of the total check carriage has impacted against a spring pressed plunger 200 and forced this plunger to the left and by means of the pointed end thereof has cammed the unit arm retaining pawl '96 to such position as to release the unit arm and W permit it to return to position in the accounting section. In Fig, 16 the arm is shown in position in the computing section just prior to its return to the accounting section.
After the unit-arm is released the slip carriage moves to extreme upper position bringing a pin201 shown in Figs. 29 and 28 into contact with a pivoted mem'ber'202, thereby rocking pawl 178 out of notch 179 in total check carriage 153. The total check'carriage is then'returncd to normal position by means of a spring 203 (seelFig. 12). {Pivot/edmember 202 through a link 203* connects with the'pivoted bail 204 which carries locking plate 82, thereby releasing locking plate 82 from. engagement with the notch in bar 78 (see Figs. 10 and 28). a
To restore the parts in the accounting section the end of shaft 128 is provided with a cam 205 which through a bell crank dra ilys 0 this shaft is fastened a dog 207 (see Fig. 12) which upon rocking clockwise contacts with a pin 208 and rocks arm 89 clockwise. restoring parallel bar to normal position. Pawl 209 carried by this arm contacts against a roller 210 carried by forked arm 211. thereby rocking forked arm clockwise and through a pin 212, restoring latch arm 83 to normal position in which it-is latched by pawl 77. Parallel bar 86 also latches over 85 as shown in Fig. 9. Inasmuch as pawls 77 and 77 are connected to bail 204 by means of springs 213 and 214 (see Figs. 13 and 14). these pawls will not be drawn up into latching position until bail 204 is raised at the end of the series of operations in thecomputing section. Therefore 83 will not be latched by 77" except after the operations in the computing'section have been completed. When bail 204 is rocked and plate 82 is lifted from the notch in bar 78, the bar 78 will be drawn to the right under the tension of spring 84 which is put under tension by the rocking of member 83, to which it is attached. Spring tension of spring 84- overcomes the tens on of spring 79 which is alight spring This bar 78 will then be locked in normal position by pawl 77 and the unit arm carriages will then return to normal position under the influence of springs 69. Previous to th s return of the carriages the unit arm which was in the computing machine had completelyreturned to normal depending posi tion. A
It has been found that the unit arms in returning have a tendencv to rebound from vertical depending position. In order to prevent this undesirable action and at the same time provide means for removing any desired unit arm for repair or for the replacement of another set of type 181. designating a different nameor revised address. I. provide the construction illustrated in Figs. 6. '7 and 9. Each unit arm 71 has at its upper end two metal plates 71* and 71" which are notchediat the side to receive the supporting shaft 70. Below this shaft is a cross bar 215 which is suitably fastened to the unit arm'rcarriagetbracket 64 and 64. This cross bar is stiffened by plates 216 which tie it to the shaft. Cross bar 215 is grooved upon' its lower-edge as shown at 217 and is provided with-a resilient bumper block218. Each unitfarm carriesa retaining paw-l QIQTWlllCh is free to move en'dwim to a-limit'edfeirtent' 0n the unit arm and which has a. projection adapted to cooperatewith groove 21?. Over the shaft is slipped a retaining fork 220 which through a spring 221 connects with retaining pawl 219. Retaining fork has a projection 222 to permit the fork to be gripped and raised'when it is desired to replace the unit arm. Upon 'the return of the arms to vertical position the resilient bumper 218 takes up a part of the shock. Thereafter the spring pulled retaining pawl 219 engages in groove'217 and locks the arm in vertical position,- therebv preventing the objectionable rebound. The complete cycle of operation having been traced for one operation, it is sufficient to state briefly that credit operations can also be performed. The adding machine is provided with a credit kcv usually known as a subtracting key. This is shown at 137 in Figs. 2 and 1. In a Creditlransaction the index arm is first selected and positioned in visible posi tion in the computing section. The customers name and other data is written on the sales slip and the ar ount of the account is set'forth on the adding machine kevs. Thereafter theamount to be paid or subtracted is set up. the credit key depressed and the machine operated in the usual mun ner. This operat on prints the sales slip as hown in Fig. 33 printing on the slip the item B. indicating the amount is a received amount. The subtraction is carried out and the new amount or subtrahend. i 0. new amount of account. is printed on the slip and transferred to the unit arm in the usual manner.
In Fig. 32 I have shown the sales slip which is the duplicate slip. which is used by the clerk as-a guide in setting up the item amounts as slotted. This slip is not
