Be it known that I, HERBERT E. BRIDG- wArnn, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of @nondaga` and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the followingr is a specification.
VMy present invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to what are known as collapsible or portable typewriters and to the type actions thereof. The main object of the invention is to provide new and improved type bar actuating mechanisin and .which is especially acapted for employment in a collapsible or portable typewriter wherein the type bars are collapsible.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointedout in the claims.

In carrying out my invention in the present instance I provide a type bar support which is shiftably mounted for the purpose of enabling' theitype bar system to be alternately expanded for use, and compacted when in disuse to reduce the dimensions of the machine for convenient handling;V or boxing. Said type har supportis in the form preferably of a horizontally disposed segmental body 7 provided with lateral wings 8 cast integrally with the l, dy and terminating` in upright depending; extensions or slide bars 9 formed along` their outer faces with vertical V-grooves 10 (Figs. 1, 2 and 5). Oppositely facing co-operating' V-grooves or seats 11 are formed in the stationary trackbars 12. The type bars 23 are adapted to slide over the rest 30 in order to be elevated into a position for use, this being accomplished by shitting the seen'ient or type bar support downward. With the type bars having a pinandslot or direct connection with their sub-levers 34 it was foundV to benecessary in order to enable the type bar-'support to be freely shifted to expand the machine :tor use,V to provide a yielding fulcrum or support for the sub-levers. In the present instance this support is aorded'by individual iulcrum arms 44, one for each sub-lever 34. The tulcrum arms are substantially upright when the machine fis in' collapsed condition, each fulcrum arm being provided at its upper end with an open-mouthed slot indicated :at 45 which receives a'headed fulcrum pin 46 projecting laterally from the side of the associate operating lever 34 between its ends and resting in the bottom of the slot, there heiner thus provided a iulcrum for the lever 34. Thefulcrum arms 44 are pivotally supported at their lowerends on an arcuate pivot Wirel 47 common to all of the fulcrum arms, and mounted in turn on a support 48 which is horizontally disposed forward oiz the typebar segment and is segmental in shape, being of considerably greater radius than the type bar segment, so that the two supports or segments may in a sense be interseated. The segmental support 48 may be an aluminum casting provided with in tegral lateral extensions 49 which are angularly disposed, as clearly appears from Fig. 1, the outer faces of said extensions being flattened to fit between the side plates 1 with which they are held in fixed and rigid relationship as by headed screws 50. The lower ends of the fuleriim arms 44 are received in and guided by slots or keri's indicated at 5l formed in the rear portion ot the segment 48, these guide slotsl beingr radially formed and having the `same center as the slots 24 in the segment?, the two sets of slots being inline with each other as clearlyV appears from Fig. l. It is to befunderstood that while for convenience of illustration the full showing ot the slots 5l has been omitted from the drawings, yet there is a complete series of said slots extending from one end to the Vother of the segment 48 which supports the sub-levers 34 and their tuicrum arms 44, said slots 51 corresponding in number to the slots 24 in the type bar segment 7. It will be seen that the type bars together with part ot' their type actions comprisingr the levers 34 radiate from a common ceiter` while the key levers extend foreandatt ot the machine in substantial `parallelism although slightly tanned outward at the sides of the system in order properly to space the keys inthe keyboard. Also it will be apparent that the links 36 may be bent or twisted in order properly to connect the sublevers 34 with their key levers 38. Each type action is provided with spring restoring means which may vcomprise a coiled ,spring hooked at its upper end through a hole in the associate Vsub-lever 34 back oi downward 'and beine anchored at its lower` end to a spring'plate 53. Said plateis suitably vsecured tothe underiace otl the seg-l nient48 and is arcuate in shape, the inner edge at 54 being inclined upward and rearward and being'tormed with a' series ot holes through which the 'lowereends of the springs 52 are hooked. Said spring 71 is coiled around the stem of the stud and is confined between the bottom of the housing 66 and the flange 69'. The inner end of the stud is adapted to co operate with two holes 72 formed in the right-hand side plate 1, one hole located to lock thecrank arm 64, the toggles 58, 62 and the type bar segment 7 8 all in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 where the toggles are straightened, the segment is raised and the type bars lowered or compacted, the other hole 72 co-o-nerating to lock the parts in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 5 where the toggles are broken, the type bar segment is lowered and the type bars raised in position for use. Excessive downward movement of the segment 7 8 is prevented by angular stop pieces 73 which are secured at their outer ends by screws 74 to the bottom of the tra-ck bars 15, the lower end portions o't said stop. pieces projecting into the path ot the slide bars 9. the bottoms of said slide. bars being adapted to contact with and rest on said stop pieces or plates 7 3 as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. In Fig. 2 the typewriting machine is shown in collapsed or compacted position at which time it will be observed the bodies of the type bars are recumbent or supine, being substantially horizont-ally disposed'and in contact at their forward ends with the pad or plate. 5. Just forward of said pivots the bot-tom edges of the bars rest on the rest 30 which is substantially in the horizontal plane of the top or printing face ot the platen, the pivots of the type bars being at this time close to said plane. The toggle elements 53 and 62 are substantially straight so that the weight ot' the type bar segment is largely sustained by the toggles and the rock shaft 57. Also at this time the fulcrum arms 44 are substantially upright.
llVhen it is desired to `e\pand the machine tor use the poppet or locking pin 68 is first withdrawn from the rear hole'72, leaving the crank arm 64 tree to be swung forward until the poppet 68 is brought opposite the forward hole 72 and locked therein. This forward movement of the crank arm. rocks the shaft 57 and breaks the toggles 58, 62, swinging the toggle elements into the angular relationship shown in YF ig. 3 and causing the segment to'be shifted or lowered vertically downward on the tr'aokways 12 to its lower positionwhere it is supported by the stop plates 7 3. This shitting movement in the present instance isv about three-quarters ot an inch'in length.
i As a result the shi ted segment 7 is brought over the stationary rest 30 and as he iul- Crum wire 25 moves downward belowsaid rest the bars will swing Vpivotally on said wire, changing their angular relationship with the segment and being raised or elevated at their type ends to the position shown in Fig. 3. From this ligure it will be observed that while the combined bodily and pivotal movement ofthe type bars has not brought them to an exactly vertical position yet lthey are substantially upright and arcsupported by the rest 30 above their pivots in position to be actuated to print when their key levers are depress-ed. f The raising or elevation oi the type bars from compacted to expanded position by moving or slidingv over their stationary rest is permitted by reason of the fact that the tulcrums of the levers 34 are floating or yieldingly mountcd'so that the levers may all simultaneously move or yield to fthe shitting ot the type bars, these movements carrying the said levers from the Fig. :3 position' radially outward to the FigaV 3 position. The levers 34 near the middle of the machine will have a substantially for# ward movement. `While the motions or" the outer levers ol5 the series will include lateral or sidewisc components, still to a considerable extent their movement is also forward. The ulcrums 46 of the sub-levers or levers 34 also move forward, and at the same time are slightly lowered due to the fact that the fulcrum 'arms 44 swing downward from the upright position to the inclined position illustratedY in Fig. 3. This forward movement of the sub-levers swings the upper end portions ot the links 36 forward Vabout their pivotal connections 37, which latter remain stationary,and this swinging'movement ot the links clears the locking shoulders 36 from the locking plate'55, thus` unlocking the type actions so that they may be readilvcperated by depression of th printing keys 43.

It will further be noted that during the printing actuation of the type bar the bodily location of the ulcruin'of the sub-lever will not be disturbed, the fulcruin arm remaining in contact with the rest or stop 5G. On releasing the actuated printing key the parts will be restored to normal-position by the action of the restoring spring- 52.
The machine is compacted or vcompressed and the type bars simultaneously restored from the position of use (Fig. 3) to the position of disuse (Fig. by manipulating the'crank arm 64, swinging` it back to its rearinost position, straighteningF the toggles, raising the type bar segment and causing the type bars to slide or move over their stationary or fixed rest from the 3 to the Fig. 2 position.
