The manner of vmounting the bearing sleeves'respectively in plate -68 enables said sleeves to' be readily adjusted axially in the plates. In this 'manner the type segment may be adjusted axially Y so` as to adjust the typing positioncf the type heads laterally ofthe machine. lThis adjustment may ibe effected by loosening'the cap nut 'H or the nut l2 or both said nuts and then positioning the sleeve E9 axially inthe plate 68 afterwhich both the nuts vare tightened to secure the sleevermly imposition.
The axis of the type bar segment is located immediately above the typing point or line. The parts of the type bar mechanisms are arranged vso that, in the case of certain type bars, the type bai-will be givenrsubstantially the same actuation 'or movement under the action of the actuating mechanism when the type segment is in upper case position as when the type segment is in lower case position so that the type will engage the work sheet with Vsubstantially the same pressure or force. The parts of the type bar mechanism may be constructed and arranged so that the upper case types will engage the work with substantially the same force as the lower case types in all of the 42 .or more bars of the type basket. Preferably, however, `the construction and arrangement is Vsuchthat the upper case letter types, which are ordinarily somewhat larger in area than the lower case letter types, will strike the work sheet with afslightly greater force than the lower case types to produce substantially uniform type impressions with all the letter types.
The parts of the several type bar mechanisms betweenthe levers At!! and the type bars may be variedin constructions and dimensions in difierent `ways to obtain. substantially uniform actuations .of the type bars from these levers. Certain ofthese variations which have been employed in vactualpractice and have secured satisfactory re- :sultszlare indicated Ygenerally below.
.The type .bars 22 have-:substantially thesanie lengths' throughout-,the typezsegmentbut fthe? type heads arebent :at diierent :angles withrelation to the type lbarszto cause each type to engage the work in apositionasubstantially perpendicular to the type line. 'The links 38, the bell cranks'32,
and the links 52 also preferably have substantially the same dimensions throughout the type segment. The bellccrank levers :45 varyinjdimensions from the central portion to the outer portion of the type segment. In vthese levers, considering the levers innormal positions with the Atype :bars retracted, .the horizontal distance between .the pivot 82 lconnecting the link A54 with thev lever and the. pivot `28, in general, increases slightly ,insucc'essive `levers from the .central vportion to the outer portion off-the-rsegmentalthough thereare certain exceptions to this rule. There is also, in general, a greaterincreaseiin `the vertical distance betwen the-pivot--ll .and the pivotal connection 22 .in successive levers Vfrom the .central portion to the louter portion Vof .the segment. The horizontal distance between the pivot 8 4and the pivotal connectionfliebetween the link52 and said lever is increasedtotastill .greater extent in successive levers from the central portion to Athe outer portion of the segment.
The length of the link 54 betweenthe'pivotal connection V32 connecting the saine with thelever et and the Vpivotal connection 88 connecting the link with the leveri55 increases in successive type bar 'mechanisms from the zcentralportion tothe outer portion of the type bar segment. In the case lof thelever 56, the horizontal distance between the pivot 58 of the ylever andz'the center of the pivotal connection 188V between 'the same and the linkt, .in generahis increased slightly in successive type .banmechanisms from. 4the central tothe outer portion of rthe type bar segment. The vertical distance between the pivot 530i the lever 56 and the .center of thepivotal rconnection .38 diminishes .greatly in successive typebar mechanisms from the central 'portion to the outer portion of the type bar segment while the length'of the horizontal arm of thelever -is substantially increased in said successive type bar mechanisms.
The levers 64 have substantially the same length throughout the series. The distance, however, between the pivot of the lever and thexcenter Vof the-roll 62 is increased, generally, in thesuccessive type bar mechanisms from the central portion 'to the outer portionof the `type bar segment although there are certain exceptions.
vIn the machine illustrated inthis application, the levers 64 are swung downwardly by power under control of suitable Ykeys of the keyboard to actuate the type bars.
Certain of the type bars 22 of the present machine are provided with a plurality of types arranged to be Vbrought alternatively into position to engage a work sheet supported on the `platen and all of the type bars may be provided with this construction if desired. `As shown .in Figs. 1, 3, 5 and Gof the drawings, the type bar 22 is'provided :with Atwo types and 92 `arrangedat Vdif-- ferent distances from the :axis :ofxthetype bar and having the type axesarranged at anacute `angle to .each other and the'acting faces "of the types'at an obtuse angle. With the type bar segment in lower case position, the angularl position of the type bar with relation to the platen is such that the type nearer the axis of the type bari'will be engaged with the work sheet :when th'eltype vbar is swung into type engaging position as'show-n inFig..5. With the `type bar `segment in upper :case .position,` however, the angular :positionoof the type bar with relation to the work sheet is shifted so that the type 90 farther' from the axis of the type bar will be engaged with the work sheet, when the type bar is swung intoV work engaging position, the other type being held out of engagement with the work sheet as shown Vin of the type bar segment and the type bar mecha nisms are preferably such that, with the type bars in retracted positions, the pivotal connections 82 are located the same distances below the lines 9G when the type' bar mechanisms are in lower case positions that these connections are located above said lines when the type bar mechanisms are in upper case positions. Each of these lines bisects the angle between the upper and lower case positions assumed by the link 513 of the corresponding type bar mechanism when the type bar is retracted. In all cases in which it is desirableV that a type bar mechanism shall produce @substantially the same action or that the type shall strike the work sheet with substantially the Ysame force when the type bar mechanism is in upper case position as when said mechanism is in lower case position, the parts are constructed and arranged so that the center of the pivotal connection 88, inthe actuation of a type bar, is moved from the point in the median line or bisector 94 ,which it occupies at the beginning of a type bar actuating stroke, to a point in said bisector at the end of said Vstroke both when the type bar mechanism is in lower case position and when said mechanism is in upper case position. This construction and mode of operation is shown in the vdiagrammatic views Figs. 14 and l5.
A slightly different arrangement of the parts of the type bar mechanisms is employed in those mechanisms in which it is desired that the type shall strike a heavier blow upon the work sheet when the type bar segment'is in upper case position than when said segment is in lower case position. In this case'the parts are constructed and arranged so that the center of the pivotal connection 88, during a type bar actuating stroke, is moved from the point in the median line or bisector 94 which it occupies at the beginning of a type bar actuating stroke to a point below said line at the end of said stroke. The type bar mechanism will have this mode of operation both when said mechanism is in lower case position and when said mechanism is in upper case position. Figs. 16 and 17 show, diagrammatically, this construction and mode of operation.
The construction and mode of operation shown in Figs. 14, 15, 16 and 17 will be further explained in the later description.v
The machine is provided with a type head guide 95 for locating each type head laterally of the machine as the type head is projected downwardly to engage one of the types with the workI and thereby insure the placement of the type in the proper lateral position in the printing line. This guide is attached at its forward end to the traverse portion of plate 'Il of theV frame Vof the type carriage extending in front of thetyping lpoint. The guide 95 is provided adjacent the rail with a slotor guideway 96 having'downwardly converging sidewalls arrangedto receive a projection 97 extending outwardly Vfrom Ythe type head beyond the type 99. Thisfslot. which has only a slightly greater width thanthe projection 91 on the type head, is entered by the projection when the type segment is in lower case position.
In order, correspondingly, torposition the type heads when the type segment is in upper case position, the type head guide 95 is extended rearwardly beyond the typing point and is lformed with a laterally deiiected end portion 98 having a guideslot 99 formed with downwardly converg-V ing side walls Vto'receive the projection I99 extending inwardly from the type head 'when the type segment is shifted to upper case'position. The type bars 22 are preferably made of sheet metal for the sake of lightnessand relatively low expense of manufacture andare easily bent lat- Y erally out of proper position. With theabove construction, if the type head is slightly displaced out of its normal position laterally of the machine, the engagement Vof one of the projections 9'! or I 99 on the type head with one of the side walls of the correspondingslot in the type head guide during the type impression stroke of the type bar will deflectithe type head laterally to place the corresponding type in the proper position laterally in the type line when it engages the work. f i

.As above stated, in the present construction, power operated mechanism is provided for moving the lever 64 of each type bar mechanism downwardly to engage the types carried by the type bars with the work sheets. In this construction, the power mechanisms for operating the levers. 64 have substantially the Vsaine construction, arrangement and mode of operation as the .corresponding mechanisms forY operating the intermediate levers of the type bar mecha# nisms shown anddescribed in the patent to OscarY J. Sundstrand No. 2,370,505. The type segment is acted upon by coiled springs |99 each attached toV one end of a bracket26| secured to the plate 'I6 and at its other end to one of the plates 68. These springs counter-balance the weight ofthe type segment and enable the same to..be lifted more easily by the power mechanism. n Y
As stated above, in the case of certain type bar mechanisms, it is desirable that the type should engage the work sheet with substantially the same force when the parts of said mechanism are in upper case positions as when they are in lower case positions. In order to secure this result, the parts of the type bar mechanism are constructed and` arranged as shown in Figs. 14 and 15, in which the roll 62, the lever 56, the link 54 and the lever 46 are illustrated diagrammatically. These figures respectively show the above parts in the positions which they assume in upper case and lower case positions and the said parts are illus- Vtrated in full lines in type bar retracted positions and in dot and dash lines in positions substantially at the end of their type bar actuating movement. Taking the line 94 extending from the centerV 93 of the pivot 13 through the center of the pivotal connection 88, with the parts in type bar .retracted positions, the parts are constructed and arranged so that the center of said pivotal connection is brought back to this line at The pulley 2|6 is mounted on a shaft 2|? k same angles with the corresponding positions of the link 54 in lower case and upper case positions and substantially the same movement or force will be imparted to the typebar. 1 Y Y Y Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, show the type bar mechanisms arranged to impart substantially equal type impression' movements to the type bar in lower and upper case Positions. This construction, in actual practice, has been employed in the numeral typebar mechanisms, in which the upper case figure type impression surfaces have substantially the same areas as the corresponding lower case gure types. f
Figs. 16 and 17 show diagrammatically, the roll 62, the lever 56, the link 54 and the lever 46 constructed and arranged to impart a greater movement to the type bar to cause a heavier type impression when the parts of the type bar mechanism are in upper case position than when said mechanism is in lowercase position. Fig. 1,6 shows the parts of the mechanism in. upper case positions and Fig. 17 shows the parts in lower case positions, with the parts in full lines in type bar retracted positions and in dot-and-dash lines at substantially the end of their type bar actu-v ating movement. Again, taking the line 94 extending from the center 93 of the pivot I3 through the center of the pivotal connection 88 with the parts in type bar retracted positions, the parts are constructed'and arranged so that Vthe center of said connection 88 is not `brought the end of its type bar actuating movement both back to the line 94 at the end of the type bar Y actuating movement in either the upper ycase or the lower oase position of the parts but the final position of said center is below said line as clearly shown. In this case, the pivotal connection 82 is located at the same distance from the line 94 on opposite sides of said line in lower and upper case positions of the parts, as in Figs. Lle andV 15. With this construction, the path Vof the center of said pivotal connection 88 lies at a greater angle to the positions of the link 54 when the parts are in. lower case positions than when the parts are in upper case positions and the type bar will be given a greater movement to cause a heavier type impression when the parts are vin upper case positions. K
Fig. i8 discloses a modied construction by which the strengths ofthe type impressions may be regulated. In this construction'l the lever 56 consists of two parts of which one part 56a. is pivoted on the pivot rod 58 and a second part or arm 56h is adjustably mounted on the part 56a. The part 56h is formed with a slot 244 in which engages a holding bolt or screw 246 passing through an opening in the part 56a and the part 56h is provided with a second slot 248 in'which engages a boss or stud 56o formed on the part 56a, the part 56h being securedto thepart 56a by the screw or bolt 246.
By means of the above construction, the downwardly extending arm of the bell crank 56 may belengthened or shortened to adjust the length of the type impression stroke imparted to the type bar 22 thereby to adjust the heaviness of the type impression. Y
The type bars, when-retracted, are placed in a forwardly opening arcuate assemblage and they normally occupy the substantially upright posilbar segmentv I4 and the support 26 and by a supporting plate 83 mounted at its lower end in slots ases-,soo

The present type actions are vsimilar in certain respects, to the type actions shownanddescribed in the patents to Foothorap Nos.y 1,251,361 dated. December 25, 1917, and 1,681,978' dated August 28, 1928, and contain the primari/fob'- jectives of slow and easy starting movement of the type bar, accelerated movement thereof as it approaches the printing point, locking ofthe bar against rebound at the end. of its retracting movement and smooth operation. As a type bar mechanism is started on a type impression stroke from the position shown in Figs. l. 2 and-,3, the arc of movement of the-.pivotaliconnection HH between the link 38 andthe lever 32.l is very nearly perpendicular to thearc of movement of the pivotal connection lillbetweenthev link 38 and the type bar 22 and, as the type bar descends, the paths of movement of the connections IUI and |92 become more nearly aligned. Therefore, the type bar will be started smoothly and easily and its movement will be accelerated as it approaches the work.
The tendency of the typel bar to rebound from the buier ring 19 is prevented by the substantially locking relation of the pivotal. connection [02, the pivotal connection lill and the pivot 34 of the lever SZYwhich are substantially in alignment at this time.
The parts of the type bar mechanism are constructedand arranged so that, during af type impression stroke of a type bar,.the pawl S28 is disengaged from the iluted roll` l i8 when thetype is a substantial distance fromA the worksheet and the type bar then executes the remainder of its stroke under the momentum of the parts of the type bar mechanism. The point in the `movement of a type bar at which the pawl isldisengaged from the fluted roll may be regulatedto vary the force with which the type is engaged with the Work sheet by the adjustment ofl the plate 32.
The present machine has a high degree of visibility combined with the advantages .of the shiftable type `segment for shifting case.
It is to be understood that, except as donned in the claims, the invention is not limited tothe particular construction and arrangement of parts of the illustrated embodiment of the invention but that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the claims.V
