A. H. TRAGESER ET AL CONTAINER Filed March 25. 1922 WITNESSES INVENTORS A TTORNEYS Patented Aug. 28, 1923.
UNITED STTES I 1,466,606 PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. TRAGESER AND LGUIS HASSINGER, OF NEW FORK, N. Y.
CONTAINER.
Application filed March 25, 1922.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT H. Trmonsnn and LOUIS HAssrNGER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented. a new and Improved Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers and it pertains more particularly to a shipping container particularly adapted for transportation of heavy fluids such as paint, varnish, ink, and the like.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a container with a removable closure plate which may be secured in position and removed at will.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the container and closure plate so that a liquid-tight joint is had between the container and the closure plate.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the container so that certain of the elements entering into the maintenance of the liquid-tight joint between the closure and the closure plate also serve to add strength to the container.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a container constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates the container, and said container has an open upper end 6. The side wall adjacent the upper open end 6 is provided with an annular head 7, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more specifically described. The reference character 8 designates a band, which is secured to the exterior of the container 5 in any suitable manner, such as spot-welding. This band 8 has an offset portion 9, and said offset portion provides an upper flange 1O spaced with respect to the side walls of the container 5. The offset portion 9 of the band 8 is so positioned with respect to the band and the band is so positioned on the container 5 that said ofiset portion 9 will occupy a position opposite the bead 7 to- Serial No. 546,722.
provide a seat or rest on the bottom wallfor a gasket 12. As indicated by the reference character 13 in Fig. 3, the gasket 12 pro ects slightly above the top edge of the container 5 and the upper edge of the flange 10 of the band 8. This band 8 is provided at predetermined intervals with lugs or proections 14:, the under faces of which are preferably cut out as indicated by the reference character 15 to provide shoulders 16. The reference character 20 designates the closing plate or top, and said closing plate or top 20 is provided with a depressed port1on 21, Which depressed portion forms a channel 22, it being understood that the outer edge of the closure plate 20 is flanged as indicated by the reference character 23, which flange is spaced with respect to the depressed portion 21 in order to form said channel 22. Carried by the closure plate at predetermined intervals are lugs 24, and mounted in each of said lugs 24 is a link 25. Pi otally carried by each of these links 25 is a cam lever 26, the upper end 27 of which is adapted to engage the shoulder 16 of its respective lug 14- when the closure plate 20 is positioned to close the container.
The device operates in the following manner:
The gasket 12 which may be of rubber or other suitable material is positioned between the wall of the container 5 and the flange 10 of the band 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. After this has been done, the closure plate is positioned and the upper end 27 of each of the cam levers 26 is engaged with its respective lug 14: by positioning said cam lever and links as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, after which they are moved to the position shown in full lines in said figure. As the cam levers are moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, the closure plate 20 is pulled downwardly until its depressed portion 21 enters the open end of the container 5 as shown in said figure. As the depressed portion 21 of the closure plate 20, enters the open end of the container 5, the gasket 12 is forced against the side formed by the offset portion 9 of the band 8 and by the head 7 and placed under compression in order to seal the closure plate with the container at the several points, i.e., the top, the bead 7 and the offset portion 9, thus giving a three-point closure and rendering the closure liquid tight.
The cam levers 26 are each provided at their lower end With an opening 29 to receive a suitable wire or similar member by means of which they may be sealed to retain the container in closed position.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a container for shipping heavy fluids in which it is possible to have a removable closure plate to insure the complete removal of the contents of the container, and, at the same time, provides a structure by means of which an absolute seal between the container and its closure plate is had.
What is claimed is:
A container comprising an open ended body portion, an annular band secured to said body portion on the exterior thereof adjacent its open end, said annular band having an offset portion spaced with respect to the open end of the container to provide an annular channel, a packing carried in said channel, said packing projecting above the edges thereof, a plurality of lugs formed on said annular band in spaced relation to each other, a cover for said container, said cover having a centrally disposed portion and an annular flange forming an annular channel, said annular flange overlying the annular band of the container, and said annular channel being positioned to receive the packing carried by the container, a plurality of lugs carried by said cover, links mounted in said lugs, and a lever pivotally carried by each of said links, said levers being adapted to engage under their respective first-mentioned lugs to cause a compression of the packing and provide a closure for the container.
