Description

T. L. LILLY 7 END GATE Fi led June 4. 1921 36 Fi 6. G
Thomas L. M11 3;
WITNESSES INVENT ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 21, 1923.
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. LILLY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Minonk, in the county of Woodfo-rd and 5 State of Illinois, h'ave'invented certainnew' and useful Improvements End Gates, of
which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to-carriages and Wagons and more particularly toend gates,
and improved fastening-'nieans therefor associated with the agon bod'y. l I
p The invention embodies a" combination fiat and swinging eye-bolt endgatle fastener for Wagons and auto trucks for fastening the end gate. embodying a pluralityof sections to the'wagon body or auto truck body, thus obviating the necessity of employing Wagon rods or chains connectingthe opposed sides of the wagon box" or truck body and Which cannot be drawn out in close quarters While with the' pr'esent fastener the end gate inay f be opened ina very minimum space.
Other and further objects of my" inven-i tion vvill become readily apparent to persons skilled in the -art from a consideration of the" following description When taken in conjunction with" thea-ccomp'anying drawings,
'Fi'gi'ire 1 is fragmentary perspective view of the wagon box er'truck body having end gate end fastening-means constructed in accordance with the inveiiti on;
Figure 2 is an enlargedvertieal sectional view of one of" the side boards of th'eibox or body and showing the fasteriiiig me'ans associatedtherewith; and v V 1 Figure '3 is a perspective view. of oneflof t'h'e slotted keepers employed with the'f'astening'mea-ns: 7. I Referring to" the drawings'in detail, in which like reference characters; designate corresponding parts throughout the' several 'views and wherein is illustrated the, preferrjed embodiment of the" invention, a wagon body or auto truck box'is shoWn'ha-v ingthe bottom portion. or bed IO-and the side boards 11' constituting the perinaneii't' section's-of said side boards or sides' of the" body;- Above' thesides ll are disposed boards or sections "12-, i which may be "supplenient'ed by boards or sections 13; thereby 's'ervingas an 'efiective meansfor increasing 'the'capacity of the'body or bo'x. In" order to retain the boards" or'sectionswl2 and 13 or metal'or thelikeare secured against the i 'EN'D GATE."

In this Way the sections or boards 12 Willaccommodate themselves to the boards 1-1 andi'n'a like manner, cleats or strips l6 are secured as indicated Iat'17 tojtheouter faces of the boards orsections 7 1'3 "so'tlialt 'the lower p rtions thereof projecting beneath the'low'erred'ges' of theboards or sections 13 enga e the outer faces of the sections 12 and for abutting the forward edges of the secured upper ends of the cleatsor strips 14', as particularly indicated in" Figure -1- of the' drawing, Will prevent rearward displacement of theuppersections 7 from, an ins'nectio'iidf the 'dra'vving'si' portion for-m'ed-by'the sides 11 thuseiitend- 1'3, as it is thought will be clearly apparent,
The end gate pi'oper"includes-a stationary sect10n" 1 8 which arran ed acrbs'sthe 'top port oiiof the perin'an'eht or noiiiial body I Y ing a'cro's's' the" minor portion of the sides, 11" It the top" thereof" andhaving hinged thereto; as indicated at 19 so tosvving' o Iit-g va rdlv and resrwsral 'imm its lower edge a section 20 which latter sectioii, extends over the entire lower, p'oiti'ofi of the" open-j ing in' betw een messes 11. In" order to secure the statioiiarysebtioii 18 in position, a transversebar21 isse'cur'ed against the rear face theredfias showman 22, aildlias the ends thereof formed with cleats 2315mduced by'forrhing'or bifurcatiiig' the ends of the bar or strip 21 0 f iiieta'l iiithe mariner of forks, the fiirca tions 241 beiiigf directed reervvardly'atright'aiifrlesto the bar proper vso that the bifurcations or slots thus fdiiiled are rendered siiiiila'rly continuous" tofthe endsof the cleats or ba ts. It will be observed that the slots or recesses areprodii'ced eye-bolts 25" are secured 'through the 'side boardsll interine diatelyflof thetop andb o' ttorn edgesjof the tailgate-"season 18', the shank" e'xtendiiiii through an opening in each side, as indicatedjat 26 and ietaiiied" in position by lock mas-0r" the like -27,"vvliile1the eyes 28 are horizontally disposed in an outward direction. Engaed v'v'ithfth' eyes 23' areth'e e es 29 o'fe e-bdli 30 having washer 31' mounted 01'1" the shank p OIfi-iOnSY thereof, Well nuts 32 pieit'erably'in the form of wingor thumb nuts. By this means, the shanks of the eye bolts 30 may be swung 7 into the slots of the baror strips21', or the cleats produced thereby and over the stops or shoulders produced by the rearwardly extending portions or retaining members 24, after which the nuts 32 may be screwed home to secure the section 18in position.
Also, it will be understood that said section nay be readily detached by unscrewing the nut 32 and displacing the sameifrom the cleat through the slots 23.
it is thought, will be suiiicient and the parts may be understood by reference to the drawing with corresponding reference characters.
It will be noted that the sections 18 and 20 of the tailgate cover the vertical rear edges of the side boards 11 and in order to cover the rear edges of the sections 12 and 13 otthe sides orside boards of the body or box, boards or sections Zia-and are provided for the tail gate, each having a short trip or cleat 36' secured near its upper and lower edges on each side, or a pair at each side or end of said sections 34 and 35 formed with slots and retaining means correspond.
I ring to the strips or bars21 employedin connection with the sections 18 and 20 and engaged by correspondingpairs of, clamping means or eye-bolts and nuts as employed in connection with the cleats at the ends of the bars or strips 21. However, the sections 34 and 35 are separable and detachable and have no connection with one another, while the sections 18 and 20 are connected, by
reason of the section 20 being hinged or pivotedto'the section 18 to swing to an open position or to be closed and held in a closed position by the fastening means above re ferred to.
It will thusbe seen that the sections 34 and 35 may be employed or removed as desired, the corresponding side board sections 12 and 13 being used or' removed therewith, depending upon the-capacity of the wagon Y body or boxdesired, although it is apparent that the construction may beemployed in connection with automobile truck bodies as well as wagon bodies or boxes.
- Onan automobile truck having av hoist forthe bo'dy,the hinge section 20 when released by the end fastening means, may open automatically as the body is raised, and said hinged or dumping section may swing up- 7 wardly when employed in connection with a wagon boX having no provision for hoist- 7 ing or raising the same in the manner of an automobile truck body or box. This will facilitate dumping at a grain elevator, the dumping action being accomplished by releasing the bolt or fastening means at the ends of the bar or section 21 at the bottom only and the cleats produced by the prothe fastening means is released, the swingjectingends thereot'at'the lower edge of the swinging section 20 of the tail gate. VVhe'n ing gate section will automatically open upon the raising of the front'of thebody, the removable .stationary section 18' serving asa mounting therefor. It is therefore unnecessary to detach the gate in order todump the load, while if necessary, the sections of'the Q end gate may be readily removed in an instant, for; loading or unloading heavy 'art1 cles or those containing considerable bulk and which cannot be discharged by dumping or which cannot be loaded bya shovel or in other suitable ways, thus the loading and unloading operation canrbe accomplished in a short time bythe removal of the tail gate sections from the sides of the wagon box or body. In hauling corn, wheat or other grain or similar material, both of the sections12 and 18 are used, or the'section 13 together with thecorresponding tail or end gatesec tion' 35. may be entirely removed, but emnloyed inhauling oats which are much r I lighter orsimilar material-requiring alarger capacity. Also it will beapparent thatthe middle section may be removed andthe upper section employed with the bottom section in ordertoreduce the capacity ascompared when employing the middle section in connection with the bottomsection 'byreason of the factthat thetop section is narrower than the'middle section, or vice -versa..
It willalso be apparent-that;the end or tail gate sections may be firmly held in position by the fastening devices when the eyebolts 30 are swung at right angles to the eye-bolts 25 through the medium of the pivotal connection of said parts and thatthe eye-bolts 30 will drop loosely at'the sides when the end gate sections are removed, or when the section 20 is released to permit the automatic opening thereof when the contents is being discharged. Obviously, it will be manifest that when the nuts are loosened on the threaded shanks of the bolts 30 they may be passed over the rearwardlv directed end 24 ofthe projecting-ends of: the plates or bars 36 and 2.1 respectivelv and when turned 7 down to clamp the washer 31 against the rear faces thereof, the fastening means will 'be securely held from outward displacement by the shoulders or stops produced by the right angularly bent end portions. the nuts and washersin' thisposition-straddling the lac slots or recesses 23 in the manner clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Furthermore, any wear on the gate may be ace commo dated orcompensated for through the medium of the take-up washers 31 and the thumb nuts 32, thus insuring a tight fit between the end gate sections and the side boards; v
In view of the foregoing, it is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent and in'view of the simplicity and practical value that it will readily 'commend itself to those skilled in the art.
I claim: v V v In a structure of the characterdescribed, a pair of edgewise disposed spaced supporting members, an end gate section swingingly supported in spanning relation to the adjacent ends of the supporting members a bar secured to the end gate section to extend longitudinally of the latter and to project at its one end-beyond the corresponding end of the end gatesection, said bar ,havingits projecting portion bifurcated longitudinally from the end thereof to the adjacent end of the end gate section, thebifurcated portion being bent laterally away from theadjacent supporting member and'a latching member swingingly supported upon said adjacent supporting member and having a portion adapted to be swung between the furcations of the said projecting portion of thebar, and 7 means adjustable on the latching member for movement into and out of" engagement with the saidbar at the innerside of the laterally bent end portion, to prevent or permit the latching member to disengage the bar, said last means including a nut threadedly engagingv the latching member and a spacing washer disposed on the latching member between said nut and the bar.
