END-GATE ron'wacfoivsv This invention is an improved end gatel for wagons which is adapted to be securely fastened at the rear end of a wagon box or rack and is provided with a vertically movable and pivoted panel which is adapted to be raised and lowered to permit the loading and unloading of live animals without the necessity of removing the cnd gate, the
object of the invention being to provide animproved end gate of this character which is cheap and simple, is strong and durable, and which may be readily operated.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a wagon end gate constructed in accordance with my invention,
showing the panel in lowered, closed position in full lines and in raised position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view on a plane of one of the pivots of the panel.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a frame 1 which corresponds in width and height with the corresponding dimensions of the wagon boX or rack in connection with which the gate is to be used. This frame is fitted at the rear end of the wagon boX or rack and comprises standards or cheek pieces 2 which are adapted to be placed on the outer sides of the sides of the wagon boX or rack at the rear ends thereof, and secured thereto, boards or jamb pieces 3 secured to the rear edges of the cheek pieces, a cross bar 4 securing said boards'or jamb pieces together in spaced relation, near their lower ends, and a cross bar 5 which connects said boards or jamb pieces, near their upper ends. The lower ends of the jamb pieces 3 bear on the bottom 6 of the wagon boX or rack. The lower bar 4 is 'secured by strap bolts 7 which are attached to the cheek pieces and extend Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 28, 1915. Serial No. 42,415.
through the jamb pieces 3 and bar 4 and nuts 8 are screwed on the outer ends of said bolts. Vasher straps 9 are also employed which secure the boards 3 to the )amb pieces at a suitable height, and are provided with openings 10 to receive securing bolts of the sides of the wagon bed or rack. Hence the frame is firmly secured in placefin the rear end of the bed or rack and ordinarily need not be removed.
In the opposing sides of the jambs 3 near their upper ends, are pivotally mounted U-shaped clip guides .11 the pivots of which are shown at 12, and wear plates 13 being provided which are secured in recesses 14 in the jambs as shown. I also provide a panel 15 which is slidably fitted at its sides in the pivotally mounted clip guides 11 so that the said panel may be raised and lowered to open or close the door opening formed by the frame l and whenl raised may be turnedto a horizontal position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This panel is here shown as comprising boards 16 which are connected together by dowels 17, indicated in dotted lines, the said boards being further connected together near their lower ends by a cleat or locking bar 18 which is adapted to bear on the bar 4 and at its extended ends is also adapted to bear against the rear sides of the jambs or sides 3 of the end gate opening. A cross bar or battcn 19 also connects the upper ends of the panel boards. A bolt 2O is provided for locking the panel in lowered position and is mounted slidably in a guide 21 on the bar 5 and adapted to engage a keeper opening 22 in the upper portion of the panel.
It will be understoodthat the panel will be raised in order to load animals in or unload them from the wagon and that when the panel is lowered and the bolt locked the gate is secure so that the animals cannot get away. So'long as the end gate is used in the hauling of live stock rit need not be removed from the wagon bed or frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In an end gate for a wagon having a frame comprising a pair of vertical standards adapted to be detachably secured to the wagon bottom, a vertical jamb member secured at right angles to each one of said standards, an upper and a lower cross bar connecting said j amb members, each of said jamb members having a recess adjacent the upper portion thereof, a plate secured in each one of said recesses, a U-shaped guide member pivotally mounted in each one of said plates, and a panel adapted to engage in said U-shaped guide member whereby said panels can be raised or lowered and swung outwardly, and means to hold said panel in a closed position.
2. In an end gate for a wagon, having a frame comprising a pair of vertical standards adapted to be detachably secured to the wagon bottom, a vertical jamb member secured at right angles to each one of said standards, an upper and a lower cross bar connecting` said jamb members, each of said j amb members having' a recess portion adj acent the upper portion thereof, a plate secured in each of said recesses, a U-shaped guide member pivotally mounted in each 20 said upper cross bar, a plate secured to the 25 upper portion of said panel, said plate having' an aperture formed therein, and an anguiar bolt slidably mounted in said guide and adapted to engage the aperture in said plate, whereby said panel is held in a closed 30 position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
