T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that LJOHN D. TOMFORI), a citizen oi the United States, and a resident of the borough oi? Brooklyn, county oi Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Securin Means of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to aifordsin'iple but adequate means whereby the upper and lower sashes of a window may be held apart, as related to each other, a prescribed degree or distance, in a positive manner, so as to tlacilitate ventilation while preventing intrusion into an apartment so guarded,-the device being set from the'interior of the apartment, and being inaccessible exter nally;-an l the invention consisting inthe specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and appurtenances herein described and claimed,-a distinctive feature being the provision of a rigid coupling member in conjunction with stud plates permanently attached to the window sashes, together with means for positively securing said coupling member to said stud plates, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I exemplify a practical embodiment of the essential feature of my invention as applied to the upper and lower sashes of an ordinary window oi? well. known type, although I do not limit myself to the identical form and construction of the conjunctive parts of the device shown, since minor details may be modified in configuration with like result, without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
With this understanding,
Fig. 1, represents adjoining portions of an upper and a lower window sash, the same being shown in interior elevation;
Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional elevation taken upon plane of line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a top end elevation of the coupling member of the device;
Fig. 4, is a side elevation of said coupling member, broken away medially;
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of one of the stud plates;
Fig. 6, is a similar view showing a modification in the securing means;
Fig. 7, is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modification.
In Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings, A repre sents a portion of the upper sash frame, formed with the lower cross bar a, and B, the (6 portion of the lower window sash, formed with the upper cross bar 5.
To the upper side of each of the cross bars a, .71, is secured a stud plate S, one for each, rigid attachment with the sash bars a, 6, being effectedv by screws, or other mechanical expedients, Each stud plate S is formed with an integral stud s, for engagement with lateralsocket arms upon the extremities of the coupling member,which consists essentially of a rod 0, or equivalent spacing member, formed with said lateral socket arms for members a, '0 each'oi the latter being formed with a socket or recess 0, 6 adapted to receive and fit over a stud s, of one of the stud plates S.
The two lateral socket arms 0, 0 extend at right angles to each other, and as related to the spacing member 0, so that when the device is in position on and between the sash cross bars a, b, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper socket arm 0., will project over the upper bar I), of the lower sash B, so as to straddle the stud s, on the stud plate S, attached to said upper bar 7), of the lower sash B, as shown more particularly inFig. 2, of the drawings,-the other or lower socket arm 0 extending parallel with the lower bar a, of the upper sash A, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
The socket arms 0, 0 may be positively retained on the studs 8, s, by resort to various well known mechanical expedients, so that I do not limit myself in this respect. Thus the said studs may be screw-threaded for engagement with nuts a, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, of the drawlngs, or said studs 8, may he slotted, as at .8", Fig. 6, for the reception of a cotter pin 39, or equivalent. In either case the object is to retain the socket arms in positive connection with the stud plates S, S, as indicated in said Figs. 1 and 2.
My window sash coupling and spacing device may be positioned as desired on either side of the window sashes, or medially as related to the side members of the upper and lower sashes A, B; or a plurality of the devices may be applied to a window, as may be found most expedient in practice in adapting the device to the exigencies and requirements of: specific conditions of use.
It is to be understood of course that the length of the spacing member 0, may he va-- ried within certain limits, provided it restricts the area or extent of opening between the lower sash and the window sill, or between top of upper sash and top of window frame (for obviously the sashes when, thus coupled together, may be moved as a unit up or down in the window frame) to a space insuflicient to afford access to an otherwise possible intruder from the exterior of the window.
It is to be understood that by the term recessed as used herein, I mean to desig nate any opening in the socket arms 0, 0 adapted to receive'and engage with the studs 3, on the stud plates S.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. Window securing means of the character designatecLcOmprising a stud plate secured'to the upper surface of the upper rail of the lower sash, a stud plate secured to the upper surface of the lower rail of the upper sash, a copulative member, formed with laterally projecting end socket arms extending at right angles to each other and formed for simultaneous engagement with the studs on said sash stud plates, and detachable means for positively maintaining engagement between said copulative socket arms and the studs on said sash stud plates, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. Window securing means of the character designated, comprising a screw stud plate secured to the upper surface of the upper-rail of the lower sash, a screw stud plate secured to the upper surface of the lower rail of the upper sash, a copulative member formed with laterally projecting end socket arms extending at rightangles to each other and formed for simultaneous engagement with the screw studs on said sash stud plates, and screw nuts for detachably securing said copulative member to said sash screw stud plates, substantially in the manner and for-the purpose set forth.
