STEATJI-TURBINE-DRSVEN LOCOMOTIVE.
`application ined .nine 2, 1922. serieu No. 565,320.
i To afl 'whom t may conce/Mz.:
Be it known that l, Hummer-r BoLTsHAU- snn, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steain-Turbine-Driven Locomotives, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Theobject of the invention is to connect the surface condenser disposed in two halves longitudinally on opposite sides of the locomotive, to two turbines that drive the locomotive. One of these turbines is for ahead driving and the other a reversing or astern driving turbine, and either turbiiie may discharge into both halves of the condenser, thus always having a maximum condensing surface for the'exhaust steam therefrom.
-VVitli locomotives driven by steam-turbines and provided with a surface condensing plant,` they placing of the condenser causes considerable difficulties. Owing to 'the considerable amount of heat to be dealt with and to the large amount of cooling tto be designed of comparatively large dimensions. However, the prescribed clearance gauge of the locomotive dare not be `exceeded and the overall length ofthe locomotive should also not be increased by the arrangement of a condenser. llhese difficulties have beenmet by providing a condenser of a cross-sectionthatis of a triangular shape and by arranging it below the boiler of the locomotive, said condenser being iitted, with two inlet branches for the steam symmetrically disposed to the locomotive boiler. These branches have been connected up by means of two conduits with two ydischarge branches for the steam correspondingly disposed on the turbine. However, a surface condensing plant of this known type is not easily accessible for the purpose of inspecting and cleaning the single p-arts thereof. Further with respect to the dimensioning of the condenser and the placing of the requisite auxiliary devices with a plant of this type, the designer is hampered by many restrictions.
The object of the present invention is to provide a surface condensing plant for locomotives driven by steam-turbines by which the aforementioned disadvantages are overcome. To this end the condenser is according to the present invention provided in two halves disposed to either side of the locomotive boiler in the longitudinal di-` rection thereof, each of said halves being connected to a branch of the exhaustpart of the driving turbine.
Constructional examples of the object off the present invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a side view of a steam turbine driven locomotiveiitted with the object of shaft 3, from which the transmission of power t0 the driving wheels 5 is effected by a parallel crank gear l. Live steam is supplied to the turbines 2l and 22 from the steam dome of the boiler 28 of the locomotive through a conduit not shown in the drawings. The turbines 21 and `22 are further provided with an exhaust part 23, having two branches 2e and 25 of which, when seen from the front, the branch 24 leads to the left and the branch 25 to the right hand side of the locomotive boiler 28. The surface condenser of the locomotive is' arranged in two halves 26 27 disposed to either side of the locomotive boiler 28 in the longitudinal direction thereof. To the condenser half 26 the branch 24 is connected and to the condenser half 27 the branch 25 of the exhaust part 23 of the driving turbines 2l and 22 is joined. The cooling water required by the condenser halves 26, 27 is supplied from a pump 11 driven by an auxiliary turbine l2; the suction end of said pump being connected up by a pipe 13 to a water collecting tank of a device not shown in the drawings, adapted to recool the cooling water utilized in the condenser. rlhe pump ll discharges into a conduit 29 having branches leading to the two condenser halves. The water leaves the condenser halves 9, 10 through a conduit 30 connected yto the former by branches, the
"These turbinesv are connected to an exhaust y steam conduit 23 common toboth turbines 'i denser vparts 26, 27 enters the latter by means and provided with branches 24; and 25. The condenser of this locomotive is also arranged in two halv'esr26, 27 disposed to either side ofthe locomotive boiler 28 in the longitudi nal direction thereof. The condenser half 26 is connected to Vthe branch 24 and the condenser half 27 is in connection with the branch of the exhaust conduit 23.
The cooling water required by the con- `ofl the conduit 29 and is returned by conduit 30 to the device for re-cooling'the cooling water which device is not shown on the drawings.
, l When the ahead turbine 2l is operativeA the'exhaustl'steam 'from the latter passes through the vbranch 24 into the condenser half 26 andthroughthe middle part of the exhaust conduit '23 andthe branch 25 into the condenser 'half 27. Vhen, however, the
asternturbine22 drives the locomotive the 'exhaust steam from this yturbine flows "through 'the branchv25 directly into the con- A"denser half 27 and through the middle part "of the'exhaust conduit 23 and the branch 24 into the condenser'half 26.
In the 'modified' arrangement illustrated "in Figq the exhaust vpart of the ahead turbine 2l is directly vconnected by means of a [conduit 24 to the condenser half 26 and the exhaust part of the astern turbine22 is in ldirect connection with the condenser half 27 by means of the conduit 25. The intericonnecting conduit 23 between the conduits 24 and 25 'is in this arrangement connected to separate branches 21, 22 of the exhaust parts vof the two turbines. Therefore when any one of the two turbines is operative one part of the exhaust steam from the operative turbine passes through the direct connection into one condenser halfand the other part of the exhaust steam passes through the interconnecting conduit 23 and `through the exhaust part of the inoperative turbine into theother condenser half.
I claim: l
l. A surface condensing plant for locomotives driven'by steam turbines, comprising a surface'condenser provided in two halves arranged on either'side of the locomotive boiler in the longitudinal direction thereof, an ahead and an astern turbine, and means effecting simultaneously a'connection ofthe exhaust partsof said turbines'to'both condenser-halves.
2. A surfacecondensingvplant for locomotives kdrive-n by' steam turbines, compris ing a surface condenser provided 'intwo halves arranged on eithersideof the locomotive boiler in'the'longitudinal direction thereof, n ahead and' an,y astern lturbine, means 4acapted `to connect one of said condenser halves to thel exhaustpart-"of the ahead turbiney and to connect the other vof said condenser halves' to the exhaust'ipart of the astern turbine, and' an interconnection between said connecting means. v
3. A surface condensing plantforloconiotives driven bysteam turbines, comprising a surface condenser providedin'two halves arranged at either side 'of the 'locomotive boiler in the longitudinal di'rection'thereof,

'In testimony whereof I 'affix 'mvs'i'gnature HEINRICH BOLTSHA-USER.
