Description

I. FRANKLIN CRAB NET FRAME Filed Jan. 16, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY application for Patented Aug. 7, 1923.
STATES ISAAC FRANKLIN, 0F BALTITEORE, MARYLAND.
GBAB-NET FRAME.
Application filed January 16, 1923. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Isaac FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lrab-Net Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to crab-nets and similar devices, and more particularly to the frame thereof, the object of the invention being to provide a novel and improved hoop which supports the net proper, such hoop being made from a single piece of wire by automatic machinery and very cheaply.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the means whereby the hoop is secured to the pole, the hoop being partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, and
Fig. a is a plan view of a modification.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment of the pole carrying at its outer end the net-supporting hoop 6 which is the subject matter of the present patent. The net has not been shown as it forms no part of the invention.
The hoop 6 is made of a single piece of wire bent into circular form and having its two end portions 7 and 8 left straight to extend along, the pole 5 on diametrically opposite sides thereof for a short distance.
The extremities of the straight wire ends 7 and 8 have inward lateral bends 9 which are sharpened so that they may be driven into the pole as shown in Fig. 2. If desired the wire ends 7 and 8 can be secured to the pole as shown in Fig. 4. Here, the wire ends are without lateral bends, and their extremities are flattened as shown at 10, these fiattened portions being perforated to receive nails 11 which are driven into the pole 5.
In each embodiment of the invention, the
the single piece of wire ends 7 and 8, near the forward end of the pole 5, are bent laterally to extend halfway around the pole, on opposite sides thereof, as shown at 12, after which the bend forming the hoop 6 is made. Each wire end is also formed with loop-like lateral bend 13 joining the straight portions 7 and 8 with the lateral bends '12 which extend partly around the pole. One bend 13 is made across that portion of the wire which extends outwardly from the pole to form one side of the hoop 6, and the other bend is made around the wire forming the other side of the hoop.
The extremity of the pole 5 is reduced in diameter, as shown at A, which produces a shoulder on the pole against which the encircling wire portions 12 seat, and said portions are drawn together to tightly embrace the pole.
it will be seen fromthe foregoing that wire forming the hoop 6 has its ends twisted together to form an eye to receive the reduced end 14 of the pole 5, said eye being formed by the parts 12,
and the same firmly gripping the pole. This arrangement, with the manner of securing the portions 7 and 8 of the wire ends to the pole, forms a simple and very eiiicient expedient for fastening the hoop to the pole, and also enables the same to be made from a single piece ofwire by automatic machinery and very cheaply.
I claim:
1. A support of the character described comprising a pole,
and a single piece of wire bent into the form of a hoop, the re spective ends of the wire having bends which extend partly around the pole on opposite sides thereof, one of said bends adjacent to the pole being looped around the wire forming one side of the hoop, and the other bend being similarly looped around the wire forming the other side of the hoop, said bends terminating in straight portions extending along the pole on opposite sides thereof and secured thereto.
2. A support of the character described comprising a pole,
wire bent into the form of a hoop, the reand a single piece of spective ends of the Wire having bends which extend partly around the pole on opposite sides thereof, one of said bends adjacent to the pole being looped around 5 the Wire forming one side of the hoop, and
the otherbend b the wire :forinin eing sii'nilarly looped around g the other side of the hoop,
said bends terminating instraight portions extending along the pole on opposite sides thereof, and having inwardly directed lat eral terminal bends which are driven into the pole.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ISAAC FRANKLIN.
