DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR BAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,629.
detachable handles for bags and the like,
and the object of my invention is to pro vide a detachable metallic handle that is adapted to be inserted Within a seam disposed adjacent to the upper edge of the open end of a bag whereby the detachable means upon said handle will be concealed therein leaving no parts exposed that would tend to catch upon any article placed wlthin said bag.
A further object is to provide a detachable handle that is simple in its plan of construction and inexpensive to manufacture and that may be attached quickly and easily to or detached from a bag.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the descriptlonproceeds, my invention resides in the detalls of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
I accomplish these objects by devlces llustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a handle embodying the features of my invention as it may appear when attached to a bag;
Fig. 2 is a view'in elevation of a detail of my invention; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section on broken line 3, 3 of Fig. 2.
In providing handles for certain types of bags, it is necessary to sew a handle in one or both sides of the open end of the bag so that when the bag is supported by one handle it will ordinarily hang with its upper end open in which position articles may be inserted therein and when it is necessary to launder or renovate the bags such handles are removed by ripping the seams. My invention obviates these difficulties by providing handles that may be readily inserted into and removed from' the said seams thus eliminating the necessity of ripping the same when it is desired to insert or remove the handles from the passageways formed by the said seams in the upper ends of said bags. 7
In forming a handle, as shown in the drawings a piece of wire of the desired length is bent double on itself leaving one strand extending beyond the endof the other strand to permit a hook being formed thereon, as
shown in the drawings, said strands are then twisted together in such a manner as to provide a loop on the double end thereof, and the twisted strands are bent .in the manner hereinafter described to provide a hand hold therefrom following which the hook portion is formed from the extended strand of wire as will readily be understood.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, I have shown in Fig. 1 a handle formed of a single wire which is bent double and twisted together and having a loop 5 provided at its double end. A straight portion 6 of the doubled and twisted wire extends from and in prolongation to the loop 5 and is preferably formed of such length as to be slightly less than the width of the bag in which the handle is to be inserted.
he portion 6 terminates at a point 7 the doubled twisted wire being bent upwardly at said point in a substantially semi-circular formation to provide the curved handle portion 8.
The curved handle portion 8 is provided with a terminal hook 9 formed by bending the extended strand to provide the said hook 9 in such form as to facilitate its engagement and disengagement with the loop 5 and of such size that may be easily inserted and removed from the passageway 11 formed in the upper edge of the open end of the bag 12 by doubling over and stretching the same as at 14.
The handle, as shown in Fig. 1, is engaged with the bag by inserting the straight portion 6 in the passageway 11, the hook 9 is then engaged with the loop 5 and the upper edge of the bag 12 is so formed as to conceal the said elements and to expose to view only the curved handle portion 8.
In the form of the handle shown in Fig. 1 there is sufiicient resiliency in said handle to facilitate the engagement or disengagement of the hook 9 with the loop 5 during the insertion of the handle or the removal of the same from the bag 12.
In practice I have found it advisable, in order to add to the saleability and attractiveness of my handle and to provide an article that embodies neatness, good taste and that is pleasing to the eye to embellish the handle portion 8 with silk ribbon or other similar material of any desired color.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which 1 now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as arewithin the scope of the invention. 7
What I claim is: I
1. In combination with a bag having a passageway formed in its upper open end, of a handle adapted to be disposed therein comprising a single piece of wire having a straight portion adapted to be dlsposed within said passageway, a looped portion formed integral on one end "of said straight portion, a curved portion integral with said straight-portion, and a hooked terminal formed integral onthe free end of said curved" handle portion adapted to beengagedwvith the said looped portion and lying completely within said passageway durmg said engagement to prevent the engaging hook and loop from contact with other articles. 7
2. An element of a bag construction constituting in part, a handle formed 01 twisted wire,-and bent to provide an arched portion with a twisted wire section extending between the ends of the arched portion, and a hook and eye connection between one end or" the section extending between the ends of the arched portion, and the adjacent end of the arched portion with the point of engagement spaced inwardly of the arched portion.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 17th-day of February D.
1920. V a V KA'I'HERINE B. COOK
