PACKAGE-TYING DEVICE.
Application filed August 15, 1922.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE B. SAnG- STON, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Loveland, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Package-Tying Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a package tying device.
It is aimed to provide a novel construction of such a device particularly the fastener for the binding cord or element and which may have a plurality of clamp hooks for coaction with the free end of the binding element, wherein said hooks are efficiently braced, and which fastener is capable of expeditious, inexpensive manufacture from a single strand of wire or equlvalent material.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in c onneotion with the accompanying drawings illustrating one practical embodiment.
In said drawings 2- Figure 1 is a plan view showing the device in use on a package of envelopes; and
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the fastener thereof alone.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in most views.
To facilitate an understanding of the invention, a package or bundle is provided as at A to conventionally represent means adapted to be tied or fastened by the use of the invention. Said bundle may comprise a plurality of letters adapted to be distributed, as by a postman, and to be secured together or held in a bundle to separate them from others or otherwise until it is desired to separate or detach them.
In carrying out the invention, a flexible binding element such as a cord at B is employed in connection with a fastener at C.
Fastener C is adapted to be made from any suitable material, for instance metallic wire, and in a single piece or strand. It may have an attaching arm at 10 provided with an eyelet 11 to which the binding element B is attached. Element B may simply loosely pass through the eyelet 11 and having a knot or head as at 12 which is im- Serial No. 521,977.
passible through said eyelet and which therefore forms the connection. Extending at a right angle to the arm 10 is a short cross arm ll'from which extends; a cross arm 12 and at the junction of which arms 11 and 12 a guide hook 13 is formed. Arm 12 extends on both sides of the arm 10 and at the side opposite to the hook 13 a hook 14, longer than said hook 13 is provided and from the same a cross arm 15 extends and whose free end is one terminal of the strand and at 16 is coiled and clinched to the arm 10. Attention is called to the fact that the arms 11 and 15 thus reinforce the hooks 13 and 14 against the strains to which they are subjected in use. Both hooks 13 and 14 are disposed relatively close to the arms 11 and 12 and are slightly resilient, so that they will exert clamping or retaining pressure on the binding element B.
In use, the fastener C is placed against the article, bundle or package represented at A shown in that position with the hooks 13 and 14 outermost as by pressure of the thumb against the arm 10. With the right hand, the cord or element B may be passed longitudinally of the package one or more times as desired and then passed through the hook 13 and to the right and transversely of the article, bundle or package A one or more times after which theterminal portion of the element B as shown is passed into the hook 14, being clamped against detachment therefrom through the resilient binding or clamping action of the hook 14.
In removing the device, the free end of element B is first disengaged from hook 14 and then from hook 13 after which it may be readily unwrapped from the package.
As merely one practical embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A fastener for a biding element having an arm for attachment to said element, an arm substantially a right angle thereto having a fastening hook for said element at one end and a guide member for the element at the other end, said hook and element being on opposite sides of the first arm and cross arms extending to the first mentioned arm and one from said hook and one from said guide member to reinforce the hook and guide member.
,ed together to reinforce the hook member.
2; A fastener for a binding element having an arm provided: With a. fastening hook for said element at one end and a guide member for the element at the other end, and cross arms extending toward each other one from said hook and one from said guide member, and said cross arms being connect- 7 and guide 3. *A fastener for a bindingelement consisting of a single strand having an-garin for attachment to said e1ement, .an. arm having a fastening hook for said element at one end and a guide hook for said element at the other end, said arms being, at a right angle to each other and the second arm eX- tending on opposite sides of the first arm, cross arms extending from said hook to the first mentioned arm to reinforce the hooks, and one of said cross arms being secured to the first mentioned arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
