PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 19, 1917.
Application filed February 9, 1916. Serial No. 77,258.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID A. RUNNION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Hancock, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device for securing a cord or other flexible tie in position about a package or other article.
Another object is the provision of a package tie including substantially an L-shaped body having one end hooked and a spring tongue overlying the bight portion of the hook and adapted to coact with the free end of the cord or other flexible tie to reliably secure the latter in adjusted position about a package.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved package tie applied to use,
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof removed,
Fig. 3 represents an elevation of thetie, and
Fig. at represents a fragmental perspective view of the free end of the cord operatively positioned over the tongue of the package tie, the latter being illustrated in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates generally the L-shaped body or base of the package tie which is preferably stamped of sheet metal and includes two right angularly disposed arms 6 and 7. The arm (3 is formed in its free end with an aperture 8 adapted to receive a knotted end of a cord 12 and at the point of juncture of the arms 6 and 7 the body 5 is formed with a cord receiving recess 9" substantially V-shaped in outline.
The terminal of the other arm 7 is curved to define a hook 9, the bight portion of which is increased in width as illustrated at 9" and 1s engaged by the tree terminal of a spring tongue 10 which is arranged in spaced parallel relation to the arm 7 thereby defining a cord receiving slot 11. The end of the tongue 10 opposite the slot 11 is spaced from the inner edge of the hook 9 to provide a cord receiving entrance or throat 10 In applying the improved package tie to use, the body 5 is placed upon the top of the package 18 in approximately the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The cord 12 is subsequently looped longitudinally about the package 13, extended under the arm 7 and positioned in the recess 9. The free end portion of the cord 12 is subsequently looped transversely about the package and is slipped through the throat 10 between the terminal of the spring tongue 10 and enlarged bight portion 9 of the hook so as to lie within the slot 11. The free ends of the cord is subsequently turned back over the terminal of the spring tongue 10 and is engaged in the throat 1O thereby forming a loop 14 adjacent the free end of the cord and crimping the latter under the enlarged bight portion 9 of the hook so as to firmly secure the cord in position about the package 13.
What I claim is A package tie including a substantially L- shaped body defining a pair of right angularly disposed arms, a hook connected with one of said arms having an enlarged bight portion, a cord connected with the other arm, and a spring tongue extending in spaced parallel relation to the first-mentioned arm and the beak of the hook having its free end normally engaged with the bight portion of said hook and adapted to be fieXed outwardly to permit the cord to be inserted between the tongue and hook and engaged between the tongue and the first-mentioned arm, the extreme end of the cord being adapted to be In testimony whereof I aflix my signature passed over the tongue and between the latin presence of two Witnesses. ter and the beak of the hook to provide a D AVID A RUNNION.
100p receivingthe tongue and securing the cord against'slipping, and the free end of the XVitnesses: cord being held' between the bight portion of RUSSELL MILLER. the hook and the object engaged by the cord. G120. W. HARDY.
