CHANGEABLE SIGN.
Application inea npnfi 3,
ToaZZ wlw/mit may concern:
Be it known that l, Rosoon C. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Changeable Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to changeable signs of the stationary type and has for yits object the provision of a sign board provided with means whereby to hold a plurality of plates bearing various legends and indicia,..
the device being for use anywhere and by anyone for display purposes, its adaptability being unlimited.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the sign board proper is formed with means for holding the plates in such a way that they may be quickly and easily changed when it is desired to vary whatever advertisements appear upon the board.
An additional object is the provision of a sign board of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in construction, highly eiiicient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in theart.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a vertical section illustrating the sign plate formation and mounting.
Referring more particularly to the drawings l have shown the device as comprising a vertically disposed body 10 which is formed preferably of sheet metal and which may have rolled or beaded edges 11, or which may be reinforced in any way preferred for the purpose of providing the requisite stiffness. The top of this body or sheet may have its edges inclined as shown at 12 and is preferably provided with a hand hold 13 which will facilitate transportation of the device from placey to place and which also enables it to be suspended from a support. The upper corners are provided with holes 14C which may be used if it is desired to nail the device in position, or suspend it in some other fashion. The lower corners of the body have formed thereon or secured thereto depending legs 15 which are preferably pointed so that they may ieee. serie-1i no; seance.
be inserted into the, ground for holding the device in upright position instead of suspending it. tilted or leaned against a wall or othersupport in easel fashion. The body is formed with spaced slots 16.
The device may of course be ln connection with this board I make use of a plurality of inverted V-shaped plates 17 which may have any desired matteipainted or otherwise inscribed thereon which may be in the nature of stencils which will expose through the cut out portions therein the color of the ground of the body, it being necessary in such instance that the color of the plates contrast with the color of the body 10. l'inay also use other plates 18 in connection with the plates 16 and formed as miniature black boards upon which prices may be written with chalk. In actual practice the uppermost plate would probablyA bear the name of the owner of the sign or of the merchant whose wears are being advertised while the plate next below might carry the address and the other plates would bear the names of the articles or commodities for sale or wanted, or any other matter desired. These plates are engaged actual practice I form clips 19 from the material of the body itself. These clips are formed by cutting or stamping the body at the desired point with substantially semicircular or crescent shaped cuts 20 and then bending outwardly the material within the confines of the cuts. These clips are provided wherever it is intended to support a sign plate and the arrangement is that an upright clip is provided atl the center of a long sign plate or at the meeting lower cor ners of alined plates while inclined clips are provided at the outer corners, all of the clips operating to preventdownward displace ment and outward buckling of the plates and the inclined ones operating to prevent longitudinal displacement.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that l have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive sign every conceivable purpose by storekee-pers,
farmers, employment agencies, restauraconstruction and arrangement of parts as' will not depart from the spirit of the 1n-v vention or the scope of the subjoi'ned laim. Having thus describediny invention I claim: l
In a sign including a sheet like body formed With slots, sign plates V-shaped in `cross section having their bight portions engaging Within the respective slots, and retaining clips on the body engaging the lower edges of the sign plates.
ln testimony whereof I" affix my signature.
Roscoe o. BURTON.-
