WAGON.
.application filed Tuly 7,
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I. BENJAMIN B. Tiroler nner, citizen or" the United StatesT residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in llllagons, or" which the 'following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to a foot propelled wagon, and comprehends a novel construction of means whereby children of tender age can conveniently use the toy and propel it over the ground or surface with the expenditure of a minimum of effort.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part oi this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the wagon constructed in accordance with the invention. v
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing' in detail, 10 indicates the body of the wagon. while the front wheels are indicated at 1l and the rear wheels indicated at 112. The front wheels 11 are journaled on an axle 13 which is pivoted as at 141 so that the wagon can. be conveniently guided. Projecting from the axle 13 is an extension 15 which is slot ted as at 1G, and pivoted in this slot is one end of a tongue or handle 17', so that the latter can be 2grasped by the user to steer the wagoni The rear wheels 12 are jour naled in suitable brackets 18 which project rearwardly Jtrom the wagon body and preterably oi1 il-shaped formation in cross section. Depending; from. the wagon body adjacent one ot these bearings, but between said bearings is a step 19. which may be of any suitable construction. j
Projecting rearwardly from the wagon body and slightly spaced from one of the said bearings is a wall` or partition 20, and journaled upon said partition and the adjacent bearings is a shaft 21. Carried by 1922. Serial No. 573,365.
one end of this shaitis an arrn22 which supports a pedal 23.. the latter being disposed adjacent the step 19, so that it can be engaged by one toot oi' the user to rotate the said shaft. while the other toot of the user occupies the step 19. ,ln this manner, the shaft is rotated, and carried by the shaft for rotation therewith, is an internal gear 241. lThe axle for the adjacent rear wheel 11 carries a pinion 25 which meshes with the teeth of the internal gear, so that as the latter is rotated, motion is imparted to the rear axle. and the wagon propelled with the eX- penditure of a minimum amount of ei'ort. In use, the user places one :Foot upon the step 19. and the other toot upon the pedal rotating the shaft with the latter mentioned toot in the manner above described, while the wagon is conveniently steered or guided by means of the handle which can be swung upon its pivot in the direction of the user.
Vihile it is believed that from the :toregoing description, the nature and advantages the invention will be readily apparentj 1 desire to have it understood that l do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be re sorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
"lf/What l claim is 1. A toy wagon comprising a wagon body, front and rear wheels, means `for guiding the wagon, bearings projecting rearwardly :from the wagon body for said rear wheels, a step depending from the rear ot the wagon body and arranged adjacent one of said bearings, a partition projecting from the wagon body and arranged in juxtaposition to the other bearing, a shaft journaled between said par? tition and the adjacent bearing `toot operated means forY rotating said shaft( and gearing; connecting the said shaft with the axle of the adjacent wheel for the purpose speciiied.
A toy wagon comprising` a wagon body.7 iront and rear wheels, means for guiding` the wagon, bearings projecting from the rear of the wagon for said rear wheels. a step depending from the wagon and disposed adjacent one of said bearings, a partition projecting `from the wagon and arranged in juxtaposition to the other bearing, a shaft journaled between the partition and said bearing, an arm projecting from said shaft, a pedal carried by said arlnfor rotating `said shaft, and a gearing connecting the lio 10 jacent the other hearing7 a shaft journaled in said partition and the latter mentioned beating, foot operated means for rotating said shaft, an internal gear carried by the shaft, and a pinion carried by the axle of the adjacent wheel and meshing with said gear for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof l aHix my signature.
BENJAMIN B. TROMBLEY.
