PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIS E. RAYMOND, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TOY HORSE. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed June 4, 1919, Serial No. 301,681. Renewed January 26, 1921. Serial No. 440,224.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIs E. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to toy horses.
One of the objects of this'invention resides in the provision of a toy horse which will imitate the action of a galloping horse when being propelled by the rider thereof.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a toy horse which is adapted to be propelled by the operation of a certain embodiment of elements that are manipulated by the rider.
With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be more particularly set forth in the specification herewith and pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a toy horse as constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
In the present embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates a toy horse which is provided with movable front legs 6 that are adapted to be turned on the axis 7 by the manipulation of the movable head 8 as the rider pulls on the reins 9 in the customary manner of steering a horse. This toy horse is made of any suitable material and its design may be varied to present an attractive toy for commercial purposes.
Journaled in the feet of this toy horse are front and rear axles 10 and 11 on the former of which is rotatably supported a single wheel 20 that is eccentrically disposed on the axle 10 and on the latter of which is fixed in any suitable manner a pair of eccentrically disposed wheels 12 for propelling the toy horse during the rotation of the axle 11 through the instrumentality of a train of meshing gears 13 that are manlpulated by an arcual rack 14 that is suspended beneath the horse by a bracket 15. Vlth the ground wheels arranged on their axles in the aforesaid manner, it is apparent that as the horse is moved by the operation of the train of gears it will gallop and in order to prevent the train of gears from retardlng the speed of the horse when the rider wishes to coast a suitable ratchet mechanism (not shown) is operatively connected between the rear axle and gear wheel carried thereby.
Secured to the arcual rack are treadles 16 which are engaged by the feet of the rider and when he presses the same downwardly the gear that meshes with the rack connected therewith is rotated and through its rotation the remaining train of gears will cause the propulsion of the toy horse. Certain of the gears in the train are suspended beneath the toy horse by brackets 17 which maintain the rigidity of the rotation gears when in operation.
The aforesaidtreadles are adapted to be automatically returned to their raised position after imparting motion to the train of gears and in order to accomplish this result a coil spring 20 is secured between the bracket 15 and the arcual rack 14:.
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that a toy horse is produced which is cheap to manufacture readily operable and easily propelled.
Having thus described this invention what I claim is 1. A toy horse of the character described comprising eccentrically disposed driving wheels, an eccentrically disposed steering wheel, a gear rotatable with said driving wheels, an arcual rack, and a train of gears in mesh between said arcual rack and a rotatable gear on the driving wheel.
2. A toy horse of the character described comprising eccentrically disposed driving wheels, an eccentrically disposed steering wheel, a gear rotatable with said driving wheels, a tensioned arcual rack, and a train of gears in mesh between said arcual rack and a rotatable gear on the driving wheel.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIS E. RAYMOND.
